Not having the money for the CR equivalent I decided to choose these for my FR/DH IH 7point. I honestly can't fault them apart from possible fluid loss in the rear brake. Great power, I've not had any issues with not stopping in time. The weight isn't exactly light but they are out of any other brakes league having only paid £170 total for a pair with 8" rotors. Great even in the wet, good modulation and they don't snatch or grab. I also run one on my DJ hardtail and I've got it set up for more grab and less modulation and its great for tyretaps and overall stopping. Definitely get a pair!

Shit!!! Don´t buy it!!! It´s light, but not strong and the worst quality I´ve ever seen. After 3 months I had to bleed it the first time. Two month later I had to bleed it again. So I sent it back to Avid and they gave me a new one. That new was the sdame shit as the brake before: In 4 months I had to bleed it 3 times!!! Now I have a Magura Marta and I´m happy!

I use these brakes (185mm/185 mm) on my Chromag hardtail since April and they've seen a lot of riding action since then...the brakes offer excellent braking performance in all conditions...although they tend to squeal when wet...but that settles after the rotors are dry again-so it's not really a con and I didn't experience this problem in dry conditions until now. The sintered pads are holding up quite well too but do need replacement now (which is in my opinion kinda normal after five months of heavy use in varying conditions).
All in all the Avid Elixir R is an excellent and reliable brake with a solid and predictable performance at a very reasonable price!

So powerful compared to my old hayes nines (which where on 203mm rotors). The modulation and control they give you are excellent in the wet to avoid locking wheels. A very good investment if you want some high quality brakes.

Good reliable feel, endless amounts of power, I feel for XC, easy use of power, my Shimano LX's would lock with no warning.
They do seem to make a bit of noise, but if you think about what they deal with i.e dust, water, mud, sand, etc. Makes me not bothered about the noise

I ride with this brakes and I am very pleased. Have the necessary braking force for DH / FR. Before I drove with Hayes 9 and the difference in modulation between the two brakes is large. With Avid elixir R can control the spiral effect more precisely.

simple, clean, and totally powerful. a simple bleed, a simple adjustment, and simple strength. this is a very nice brke with a very nice name to it. i would have rather gotten the elixir CR, as i never use the reach, and i always use the pad-contact, but, it doesnt matter. this is a great brake.

Good solid brake for the money. I have loved the power I get from this brake. I don't love that there is not a ton of modulation to it though. Its kinda locked or unlocked. They are a bit noisey too. Super strong though and reliable.

 Pros
- Strong
- Excellent modulation
- Progressive feel
- Easy to install

Cons:
- Can take a bit of time to adjust properly yourself (though I'm a bit of a noob)
- Can squeal if not adjusted properly

Bottom line, these are an excellent "bang for your buck" kind of brakes. Takes some tweaking to get the adjustment correct, but I did it myself so that probably has a lot to do with it. Avid brakes don't always have the best factory bleeds, but I guess I got lucky - they still feel great after a few hundred kilometers.

I went from a set of Hayes nines to this, and what a difference. Codes were too much brake for me. You would be hard pressed to find a brake with better stopping power and modulation for this price (paid 160 for the set).

Ordered the front lever w/ 185mm rotor as an upgrade from the Juicy 5. Still need to cut line to fit current bike. (Aftermarket brakes generally come with long hoses to ensure compatibility with all bikes). Freakishly long hose aside, the Elixirs posses greatly improved stopping power over the juicys. Mounted the elixir inboard of the shifter for one finger operation and still find the levers longer than necessary although shorter, aftermarket levers are available. Great stopping power combined with modest pricing put the Elixir 5's on my shortlist to consider when upgrading from your older worn out kit.
Have been riding these on my new Scott Genius, Noisy as hell regardless of set-up. Heard this is typical for Elixirs. Even with the howl, they have loads of stopping power , especially w/ my 185 front/rear set-up

Replaced my Shimano XT's with these, they took about 5 short runs to bed in then the power was unquestionable, no fade at the point where i would usually have two fingers on the brakes going straight towards an oncoming tree. so simple to install great trick with the banjo cable thing that lets you adjust how the hose leaves the calliper makes routing the hose easy as buying a pie from the pie shop. could perhaps have a tiny bit more modulation but hard to judge after only one session on them, Got them from CRC in the sale for only £70 a piece. couldn't resist buying myself an early birthday present.

Excellent brakes. Very powerful stopping with the dual pistons. Only squeek when wet, but doesn't last long. Had the CR versions and needed to be be bled within a couple months of use. These haven't needed to and they work flawless! A++++

Great brakes, 200mm rotor up front, 185mm rotor on the rear, super happy with them overall. The tool less reach adjustment on the levers is a nice option. OEM pad life seemed pretty good, just make sure you seat the breaks when you first get them set up, or replace the pads, get some good speed, and brake hard 10-15 times without locking up the wheels, that will help reduce the chance of excessive noise from the brakes.

Excellent modulation and stopping power for this price and for a 2 piston brake too! Step up the only downside with the brake rubbing due to the absolutely useless Tri-Align (it doesn't help at all Avid).
This being run on a 36lbs bike with a fairly rough round the edges rider up top, I couldn't of asked for a better brake.

Just got a set of these brakes on my new bike. They look and feel super solid. The lever reach adjust is nice, and the top-loading pads are the easiest pad I have ever worked on. These brakes have plenty of power for a 2 piston brake (I am comparing them to my old codes). They feel a touch soft, but I think bleeding them and putting more fluid in will help that.

Ok, these are WAY more powerful than juicys and I always thought Juicy's were just a little underpowered. Not only that but the tapered bore makes them modulate amazingly! I ride on some really dry loose trails and I have never had trouble slowing without skidding. You can find these on ebay for cheap! I bought the front and rear with 203mm discs and adapters for 220.00 usd!! Its like they're giving them away. I haven't tried the CRs but I don't think I will as I have yet to have any trouble with pad distance/adjustment.

Absolutely awesome performance. The first brake I've ever said could really be run on absolutely any bike, regardless of discipline. Incredible modulation with the new taperbore reseviour, power to spare, really solid. You miss some of the adjustability of the CR but, for the price, how can you top these?

These brakes are the best! They have tons of modulation as well as power! Break in period is very short and they squeak a little during that time. After being broken in they are the best brakes you will ever ride! Happy trails!

yes more clean, light design than J5-7, More stopping power indeed. No need 2 fingers at all I ride DH about 30C+ outside and never overheat, I have Avid Elexir 5 as rear and J7 front. Elx 5 is best one for the price.

Superb modulation and feel. Unbeatable for the money. The only downside is that they can be really hard to bleed, but if you follow the routine to the letter you shouldn't have any subsequent problems.

Good power, modulation, price, decent adjustably. a pain in the ass to bleed properly, and the rotors warp easily. overall great set of brakes if you are looking for good power and modulation without paying a fortune.

Great stopping power and Modulation, only slightly irritating thing is that the pads sit really close to the rotor, but that does not decrease the performance. A great brake for a great price Smile
