by Ben Winder
Bike riding gets underway here today in Raon l’Etape for the first round of the 2016 French Enduro Series, we’re here in the picturesque region of the Vosges surrounded by green rolling hills. Today was the first time the riders had been able to see the trails, and the format is run as a race. Each rider had a time slot to practice each trail and then the final run of the day was a race run on stage one. This was to help seed the riders for racing on Sunday.

Jerome Clementz took the first stage in the men’s and Cecile Ravanel in the women’s.

sorry but e-bikes are fucking motorcycles get them the fuck out of mountainbiking
  • 10 10
E-bikes are e-bikes. They cannot even be compared to motorcycles. Motorcycles, e-bikes, and mountain bikes. Do everything very different aside from the obvious similarities. I race moto's, I mountain bike, and I've romped e-bikes around but don't own one. All are fun to me, but at the end of the day, e-biking feels more like mountain biking and is actually more similar to a mountain bike. They are an electric motor assist powered mountain bike. Not a motorcycle. The Motorcycle Gods are mad, but forgive you.

Obesity, diabetes, hypertension and mountain biking here it comes. This movement greatly threatens proposed removal of bikes being considered mechanized. Does the industry think at all??? Say good-bye to any chance of wilderness access - profits drive everything in the mtb industry. Besides, work and effort to get somewhere also result in people caring about something. If you don't have work for something (that next DH line) you'll give two craps about maintaining it or continued access. If you sell ebikes, I will not buy my bike from you.

@HARv379: lol. Look back on the history of the motorbike: it was and always will be, simply a motorized bicycle. Don't split hairs with e-bikes. it's just a moped with a battery+electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine.

E-bikes embraced by mtb-ers in Europe, hated in the US.

It's not about the mode, it's about the likely closing of trails due to user conflicts "generated" by more people on bikes that don't have the investment of time or effort to understand the diplomacy needed to keep trail access. Since hikers and equestrians can't tell the difference between e-bikes and non, closure to all bikes is a likely result of the inevitable conflicts caused by faster equipment with more uninformed or don't-give-a-shit riders.

It's not just about trail access though. Ebikes are totally contrary to the spirit of the sport. Since it's inception it has been about man conquering a mountain under his own locomotion. Ebikes pervert this.
  • 5 1
I strongly disagree with your argument - it is about e bikes being mechanized (fully or partially to degree well beyond traditional pedal powered units). Period. Yes, access is a part of it (and a very large part) but from a regulatory perspective - pedal powered is a good argument for access to wilderness, but pedal assist is sliding down the slope in a hurry. It also has to do with lack of effort - if you want to do laps get a DH bike, if you want to race enduro get a 6" travel bike. Why do you need to skip out on the pedal part of biking? That's the definition of the sport - self propelled. If you need a motor get a dirt bike, if you need assistance and your not disabled or handicapped, go get in shape.

@topherdagopher: Yes but that's an esoteric argument, not a practical one. That same argument can be dissected into singlespeed vs. derailleur, suspension vs rigid, etc. Argue it over a fine wine or an IPA all you want, but the only tangible issue is trail closure from a (legitimate) safety concern.

And @nicolai12 , all bikes are mechanized. Regulating is probably necessary, but enforcement will be increasingly difficult as the units become more difficult to detect. The bottom line is any d-bag who spooks or injures another trail user - especially one on foot or horse - will be lumped into the same category, and kicked off the trails. E-bikes make that MUCH more likely to occur, both in the speed of the instrument, and in the lack of understanding (or concern) of the pilot.

Nico on a E-bike WTF! ... Way to ruin a legendary legacy!

I live in England and most of the good local trails where I live are on cheeky footpaths. We only get away with riding them due to low numbers and being considerate/ careful.

For an enduro race where you have to ride to the start of stages it seems an unfair advantage to allow ebikes. It's like getting a lift to the top.
  • 10 4
Ebike in a race? f*ck THAT. This is a pedal powered sport, not moto, and putting a motor on your bike is cheating. Would he be allowed if it was a concealed motor like the ones those roadies have been getting caught with?

Sorry Nico but you've just lost every last bit of respect I had for you.

Funny a nobody criticizing the most winning dh racer in history. .....
Maybe just maybe Nico knows something you do not? ??

Oh and it is practice still, smart move by using an ebike to pre ride. Save energy for race day.
  • 4 1
@d-man: Still a shitty advantage over other competitors that isn't available to everyone. Shuttles are fine if everyone is allowed, and some stages you have to pedal to pre-ride. That's just how it is. Using an e-bike in practice is cheating in a sport where pedaling to the top is part of the race—even if that isn't a timed section.
  • 2 2
@PeterWojnar: on race day sure but practice is just that. Is it unfair a factory sponsored rider has a mechanic? Or a massage therapist or a manager?
  • 7 1
I can't believe they scrapped a section of track for being too gnarly. Why not just make a super slow second line...
  • 4 0
I heard about 2 broken collarbones and a skull trauma last year. And building a second line is not always possible depending on topography, land ownership...

Love the E-bike comments. Seems like some of you live in a different world.

I watched French E-bike racing from up close and it is every bit as hard as racing without an engine. They ride up extremely technical uphills, which takes lots of handling skills and balance with a bike as heavy as that. These guys still have to make the difference by pedal power. Downhill, the weight does not help either. Each their own; as long as they race in their own category, I'm fine with it.

You've got to see this in its context. The French truly embrace risky outdoor sports, motorized or not and their downhill/enduro racing culture is second to none. When racers like Vouillioz or Jonnier ride an E-bike, it's not just literally worlds apart from the image of the fat, trail blocking, trail destroying U.S. rider without skills some seem to have in mind.
