by Bell Bike Helmets
Bell and Danny Hart are pumped to unveil Danny's freshly painted Full 9 helmet right in time for World Champs. Earlier in the season Bell Helmets hosted their Blank Canvas contest where Pinkbike users submitted helmet renditions in hopes of catching Danny Hart's eye. All the entries were narrowed down to a top ten and then Danny picked his favourite while everyone else voted for the top five, all of which received their own Bell Full 9 helmet. The winner of the artwork that would become Danny's newest graphic was jonnywellman and below is his submission and then as a final product in Danny's hands:

an orange is not that close to a tangerine.

lmao tld. really disappointed the rules didnt let us do a mspaint cock and balls helmet. I truly would've donated my next paycheck to a charity of the mspaint winners choosing.
  • 1 1
Not the best design or colors. Wish it had more black like Carpenters or Ratty. Really want to se Danny coming down the hill looking menacing. Now that would've been sick.
  • 3 1
it's not that difficult to paint a helmet all black. Even I could do it.
  • 1 0
Not all black...something like this, www.pinkbike.com/photo/12433349
Thanks though.

Great job bell, you just printed stock art on your champions helmet.

ahahah that tops all things that happened in this contest !
  • 10 2
I'm not fussed, the whole design is what's rad.

not as sick as my poopy penis entry...

Considering another popular option simply reproduced the text of some race commentary in a freely available font... This helmet looks fantastic...best of luck, Mr. Hart.

@ny shred...its just a british lion...it looks like one and a brit chose to and is happy to wear it....so don't worry yourself
  • 2 0
Meh, there's not a lot of different ways to draw the Scottish lion without leaving the realms of traditional heraldic art.
  • 2 0
its not a Scottish lion en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Arms_of_England

edit: ok looking into it the English and Scottish have very similar looking lions....so lets stick with it being british
  • 1 0
Heraldic art has a wartime purpose of being easily recognizable & distinguishable on the field of battle, so they're often very simililar, because they all wanted to use something fierce looking, but with different colors so that you could tell them apart on the field of battle. Red Lion is pretty stinkin Scottish, sir. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Standard_of_Scotland

Did you guys see the other ones? Most were all just the same old pinstripe design, i actually voted for this one and i think it suites Danny well, but its a matter of opinion.
  • 2 0
 @groghunter...thanks..you know your shizzle
  • 1 0
What's easier to create from scratch, a heraldic-style lion or an entire art typeface? You do the math @ecologist
  • 3 1
What's easier? Congratulate the winner or be a sore loser? At the end of the day there were a lot of sick designs, this is the one that Danny chose. If he's happy then so be it.
  • 1 0
@NickyVanLier -- I'd say in this case the appropriate question (and the point I was trying to make) would be "What's easier, to NOT create from scratch a heraldic-style lion or to NOT create an entire art typeface?" I'm not trying to rag on anyone's design, thought they all had merit in one form or another. Just that folks in this thread thought the winning helmet wasn't deserving because of the use of stock art, so I was pointing out that effort was probably comparable.
  • 1 0
@ecologist I don't know if you have any design experience background but fonts or typefaces are tools commonly used to make a message or even graphics, only depends the way you use them. A clipart lion is a drawing made by someone and if is used the very same way that is given free or not I can at least question originality on a design contest.. especially if is the main thing ... but I think the similarity to steve peats's troylee could have been more a concern for the people that run the contest or even DHart.
  • 2 2
I think the issue is using stock art, not how much it resembles Peaty's lid. And then submitting it into a design contest as your own original work and then actually winning - its ridiculous. It's something you just don't do as a professional designer. He could have downloaded it and put like 2 hours of his time into customizing it enough to change it and be his own. Congrats to the winner - I don't mean to be a naysayer or hater. I wish I would have won, it must feel awesome to hold your custom helmet in your hands... If anything, just take this as a lesson to be learned. Just like if you're an MC and you bite someones lyrics, another MC will eventually call you out on it. If your a designer and use peoples work as your own - expect to be called out on it by other designers.

 Lol mr negative!
  • 1 1
Would like to clarify @BeRudeNot2 that the last thing I want to come off as is a sore loser, and I'm not trying to dig on the winner either.
Merely pointing out that more effort went into my 'block of type' than people think – I made a 7x6 warp mesh to try and bend that sucker into shape! Coming up with designs is easy, making it happen is another story.

these contest are marketing genius. the designer basically does free work for them. then they turn huge profit selling the helmet
  • 3 0
Except only Danny and the designer have them made. It's not like the Steve Peat edition D3 that anyone can buy.
  • 1 0
oh sorry i wasn't clear on that

Let's take a moment to pray for Danny and his shirt

The helmet is an excellent distraction from his face

Typical socal brocal douuche. Downhillers shouldn't give a fuuuu about their appearances. Go sign up for ballet. Danny shreds, if he cared about plastic surgery, I'm sure he would have taken care of that by now. And that helmet is sick.

 Umadberoh?

Wow, Socalspeed. It takes some mini Socal balls to say something that stupidly mean, smh. You must ride street BMX.
