Johannes Pistrol rides the Steinerne Rinne from Goinger Halt, July 2014. The upper section from the summit down to the upper rinne is relatively straight forward, albeit slightly exposed. The lower section contains the hardest and the most futuristic riding. Johannes didn't clear all sections, but this attempt is the most I have seen ridden so far.
Yea, environments like this are not where you move around quickly. I've never ridden anything like this, but when hiking these mountains, you move slowly and deliberately, and you plan and think about every move before you do it, because if you don't, that's when you get hurt. This guy is absolutely insane, hats off to him
Impressive...
I guess he uses the helmet just in case some rocks fall from the lines above, because if he would have fallen down during one of those exposed traverses...well...it would not have been much of a help!
Why do people wear knee pads and no elbow pads? You see it everywhere in every discipline, but why no elbow pads? Every time I crashed without my elbow pads I regret not wearing them. Then I wear them I feel uncomfortable and restricted, then I convince myself I don't need them and take them off. Then eventually I crash and tear up my arms and repeat the cycle of wearing elbow pads!
Seriously though. Every time I strap my elbows, I keep waiting for them to release and tell me my blood pressure. Don't take the arm, doc! And let me out these got damn tourniquets!!
Maybe you should try some more comfy elbow pads. Scott Granade, Dainese Trail Skins, IXS Flow all looks acceptable options. I got the Scott ones. Initially, when I put them, I felt them a little bit restrictive on my elbow, but once I start riding I completely forgot about them.
I'll second the endorsement of the G-Form elbow pads. They're nearly equivalent to cycling arm warmers. I don't know what it is about how I fall off my bike but I always scrape my elbows. My knees are usually OK. I need to order a new set of the G-Forms today. I left the left one at the trailhead when packing up the car.
Maybe that is his ultimate goal in life. To bomb himself down a cliff on a bike and go to heaven, where he will be awaited by 99 virgin protoype bikes still unpacked from the box.
I encountered many extremely exposed sections like that in my adventures with people who ride this kind of stuff. Most of the times, I i just walk it down even though I know I could do it. It's just not worth the risk.
Sweet Jeeesus on a tricycle :-O I was cringeing the whole time, especially in the 2nd half where Johannes is riding on that narrow ledge... Scary shit pulled off with total mastery. And IMHO any comparison w/ Rampage, where the riders pick, build and rehearse their lines over and over again is a futile exercise. This kind of vertriding is where it IS happening! @Colin Stewart... any chance of seeing a behind-the-scenes of this shoot? It would be interesting to see what was not ridden (and why). Tschuess!
Whoever is talking about "let brakes go" or "he's riding so slow" is just comitting he has never been riding on such terrain. there ain't no place for going fast.
1. He's F'n insane. 2. Amazing bravery and technicality. 3. I would probably just dive off the cliff if I had to ride that slow for that long. 4. Helmet? Who are you kidding Bro?
Not sure if this vid makes me want to get out of bed and do something respectable today or nervously hide under my sweaty covers. Even though I knew he'd ride away from it I was still scared as f**k watching that.
I think you may find that bike is 650B at the front and 26 at the back. He may have it set up differently but that's what Liteville recommend.
And yea, I think its a bit crazy too!
Now that's what you call Putting the mountian in mountian biking ! Hope he didn't leave anything at the top it's a long walk up again let's see him ride it now there a challenge mwahah....
I was like... Oh it doesn't look that bad it seems like he's being over carefull then the real stomach dropper started. Then I was like......uh, he needs a wing suit instead.
ive done these kind of rides and they are fun in a techy kind of way. ( obviously not quite THAT kind of ride ) still it lacks the good flowy goodness.
Look at 0:48, those are some X0Trail
Go go Mr. Billy Goat!
Will probably get a bit warm over summer in a month or two, but they are comfy.
:-O

Tschuess!
great riding and filming!

Ahem
still it lacks the good flowy goodness.
