Video: Red Bull Foxhunt 2012 with Gee Atherton

The annual Red Bull Foxhunt took place at the Cave Hill Country Park, Belfast, over the weekend where amateur mountain bikers got the chance to race against one of the world's best, Gee Atherton.

In a role-reversal, the Foxhunt is a unique race in which downhill world champ Gee Atherton, 'the fox', was released just after the 100 'hounds', eliminating each one as he passed down the 5.3km enduro track. Only one rider managed to outrun the wiley Atherton on the mix of singletrack, fireroad and downhill sections, and that was Dublin native Greg Callaghan. Nukeproof sponsored rider Glyn O'Brien finished in third.

that guy who won is going to be telling the story of "how he beat gee atherton" to his grand kids..
  • + 169
Wrong... Gee Atherton will be telling his grand kids about the day he almost beat "The Greg"
  • + 3
anyone know how long of a headstart gee had to make up?
  • + 2
 10 seconds
  • + 1
Pretty sure it was 20 wasn't it?
  • - 3
By the looks of it, he didn't get that of a headstart...
  • - 34
thant was Gwin that wouldn't have never happen! Haha jk
  • - 25
Gee is not going to remember anyone one at this race why should he, so he gave up 10 or 20 second at the beginning thats not important he had to get passed 100+ riders he is in a different league he wont be talking about that guy how beet him
  • + 27
you sir^ are the one guy who takes it way too literally
  • + 5
Regardless of the time delay, he had a totally different line to the rest by the looks of it, so he passed most of the riders straight away.

If you look at Gee's headcam on Greg's site, they switched the lead a couple of times throughout.

Gee Atherton, one of the fastest downhill mountain bike racers in cycling history. Also know for saying "y'know" a lot
  • + 1
dardoz, I think Gee's totally different line is just him using his experience in enduro to get through the pack however he can. If he was given a "special" trail it'd be interesting to see it.
  • + 2
Have you seen his video on his site? He started off ahead of the group on top of a hill so as they pass by, he dropped down off the hill into the middle of them. I don't know what position he dropped in at though.

Then a bunch of walkers had to ruin it www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPcDNZ83Cp0
  • + 38
"its damaging the paths..." THE BIKING PATH!
  • + 41
Because shoes don't damage the trail right?

Any people walking never leave garbage behind either I suppose?
  • + 45
 Or dog sh*t
  • + 12
We should have a big cycle every weekend.hahahahah
  • + 31
someone should of suckerpunched that dude down the hill, just so they could add how violent we all are lol
  • + 21
Thanks BBC for yet again providing "impartial" news coverage which wouldn't just pander to its conservative viewers. Horrendously onesided, ill informed, badly researched and written news report. Find some real news BBC or don't bother.
  • + 6
Ah, local news. Not much going on in Ireland, eh?
  • + 19
These feckin walkers think they own the hill, they even set traps, glass, nails & wire between tree's then have the cheek to go on tv and say we bikers are Satan's minions.
  • + 3
What a bunch of sluts!!! They only look at the negatives.. they need to look at the positives and what they can get out of it!
  • + 7
Heaven forbid people having fun! Damaging the path network ...wait... a path network is erosion damage.
  • + 11
People like that are a prime example that you cant fix stupid.
  • + 2
 Or barbed wire clothes lines.
  • - 2
I'm sorry but I can understand their point of view. Mtbing does cause erosion. But as long as it doesn't turn into motorway and stays narrow I don't see the problem
  • + 1
So really there isn't an issue. As the report eventually got round to making clear, any damage caused by the event would be undone by the organisers.

I think it was totally rediculous that redbull made him keep his helmet on all the time and hold a can of redbull. I mean how are you supposed to drink with a helmet on.
  • + 3
I think it was great he wore that helmet the whole time...if you catch my drift.
  • + 1
I don't think ONE and Contour were happy about him wearing a gopro and a TLD helmet either... if contour is still with them anyway.
  • + 5
Yes...a contractual obligation...he could have used the RedBull straw...
  • + 5
it was probably because it was feckin freezin there all weekend
  • + 2
and also that he was told to watch out for the raa hahaha A bad Irish joke told by an Norwegian lol

what a creative event. looked really fun too. wonder if red bull is considering holding some thing like this in the USA? maybe Gwin would be the chaser.
  • + 14
Then everyone would need a 10 min head start
  • + 23
there's something new, america stealing an idea from europe wonder how long it will take for that to happen again??
  • - 10
 ^ haters will hate
  • - 13
hes just angry cause Gwinning is what merica does best
  • + 9
ah but lads, everyone hates the americans....true story!!!
  • + 1
if aaron gwin is what america does best, America doesn't do many things well :/
  • + 0
At least were not known for bad teeth
  • + 11
Because being renowned for being fat and dumb is sooo much better.... Just saying..
  • + 3
When did Gwin win worlds? Gee has. And even Danny! Until then gee is far superior to anyone over the pond!
  • + 3
you are really going to argue that winning ONE race out of an entire season makes someone a better rider than the guy who wins entire seasons?
  • + 0
It's all about worlds! Everyone wants the stripes! Not a gilet!
  • + 1
I swear Gwinny hasn't won a worlds yet? Steve Peat, Danny Hart, Rachel Atherton(?) and Gee have all won worlds.
  • + 1
@schwimble: That's completely true for the most part. A lot of countries do hate usFrown

i see people on here dissing red bull/monster because of an advert........ but if we didn't have the support of these big sponsors we wouldn't have the competitions like rampage ..crankworxs ........pushing the sport....granted that most of the pinkbike users are never going to be like the pros involved in these events but its still amazing to see what is capable on a bike.

It was a fantastic event, I had to work the sunday so Gee and Greg we're lucky I wasnt there for race day. This is the second time the Red Bull Foxhunt has happened, last year there were a heck of a lot more riders in a different venue www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv2p5TT9yFo
  • + 2
i dont think last year was really the fox hunt. it was still the blast in my eyes
[Reply]
  • + 3
Idk if cold, wet and muddy is definition of a good day to me, but the format of this event is cool! Fox and the hound! I can see more average non bikers thinking this was cool! Every video I watch makes me want to leave the office and ride!
  • + 5
Any day is a good day if it involves biking! No matter the weather and especially if Gee Atherton is riding with you. I agree I need to stop watching bike videos at the office because I am going to quit in order to go biking one day!
  • + 3
Your right what was I thinking? I once drove 2 hrs in the pouring rain to ride some sick trails. Got there and they told me it was too dangerous to ride and turned me away...I was soo pumped to ride in the rain, mud what have you! It's gonna be warm this weekend, can't wait!

 i like your spirit

This reminds me of how the Hare and Hound Races started in the Deserts of California, it evolved and now there is no Hare for the hounds to catch, now it is a dead engine start dirt bike race for 80 miles where the first 2-3 miles is wide open enough for 50 bikes wide or more and funnels down to a "single track" trail.

I would love to do that style race on a mountain bike, exept on dirt bikes in the desert there is the advantage of being quick off the line means you aren't stuck in the fog of dust that barely lets you see in front of your tire!

Was an awesome weekend, It was great just making up the numbers, drifting in the mud and feeling like my lungs were going to explode on the uphill sections, such a great atmosphere all weekend, only problem with taking part is I missed getting to watch the elites fight it out. Will definitely be doing it again next year were ever it may be, along with the irish gravity enduro series so i'll have some sort of fitness for the fox hunt!
