Video: Red Bull Foxhunt 2012 with Gee Atherton

Nov 28, 2012 at 9:01
by Chain Reaction Cycles

The annual Red Bull Foxhunt took place at the Cave Hill Country Park, Belfast, over the weekend where amateur mountain bikers got the chance to race against one of the world's best, Gee Atherton.

In a role-reversal, the Foxhunt is a unique race in which downhill world champ Gee Atherton, 'the fox', was released just after the 100 'hounds', eliminating each one as he passed down the 5.3km enduro track. Only one rider managed to outrun the wiley Atherton on the mix of singletrack, fireroad and downhill sections, and that was Dublin native Greg Callaghan. Nukeproof sponsored rider Glyn O'Brien finished in third.

Gee is not going to remember anyone one at this race why should he, so he gave up 10 or 20 second at the beginning thats not important he had to get passed 100+ riders he is in a different league he wont be talking about that guy how beet him

Regardless of the time delay, he had a totally different line to the rest by the looks of it, so he passed most of the riders straight away.

If you look at Gee's headcam on Greg's site, they switched the lead a couple of times throughout.

dardoz, I think Gee's totally different line is just him using his experience in enduro to get through the pack however he can. If he was given a "special" trail it'd be interesting to see it.

flag dardoz (Dec 5, 2012 at 14:15)
Have you seen his video on his site? He started off ahead of the group on top of a hill so as they pass by, he dropped down off the hill into the middle of them. I don't know what position he dropped in at though.

So really there isn't an issue. As the report eventually got round to making clear, any damage caused by the event would be undone by the organisers.

This reminds me of how the Hare and Hound Races started in the Deserts of California, it evolved and now there is no Hare for the hounds to catch, now it is a dead engine start dirt bike race for 80 miles where the first 2-3 miles is wide open enough for 50 bikes wide or more and funnels down to a "single track" trail.

I would love to do that style race on a mountain bike, exept on dirt bikes in the desert there is the advantage of being quick off the line means you aren't stuck in the fog of dust that barely lets you see in front of your tire!

Was an awesome weekend, It was great just making up the numbers, drifting in the mud and feeling like my lungs were going to explode on the uphill sections, such a great atmosphere all weekend, only problem with taking part is I missed getting to watch the elites fight it out. Will definitely be doing it again next year were ever it may be, along with the irish gravity enduro series so i'll have some sort of fitness for the fox hunt!
