This is brutal! Every DH trail we ride in the kootenays is accessed from a Forest Road. In BC they are not "fire roads". They are logging roads. Roads that were built to harvest the the trees. Without the harvest there is no roads! So your trail got logged - rebuild it. Many of our favourite trails here have no legal right to be there. I have seen bilke trails cause envirnmental damage from water diversion, sedimentation, erosion - not to mention litter!
LEt's be realistic. It is a working forest. Let's recreate in it, work in it and enjoy all of it's life cycles. As a forest professional, I can assure you that much more thought to the ecosystem goes into every cutblock than will ever go into planning a recreation trail.

Which Muscles are Really Used During the Pedal Stroke?
I have strapped a number plate on my bike a few times and always riding flat pedals. Clipless riders always look at them like training wheels. I just smile when I'm passing them up a steep power line climb while they are walking.
If I rode for a living I would switch. I'm not going to miss a month or two of riding with a broken wrist from my Wednesday night ride cause I fell over! Shit happens - step over it with flats!

Better to get the occaisonal injury then to slowly rot from obesity and heart disease. Better to push your limits then to coast down the easy path (to the sofa).
Soon your daughter will be yelling at you to "hurry up old man", and it will be the best mock of your life as you hammer down the trail to catch up to her on her bike.
Ride on!
