Welcome to the 2023 Value Bike Field Test
@Mtn-Goat-13: I've got a Instinct Alloy 30... nice bike but heavy AF at 35.8lbs for a Large totally stock. OK, take half a pound off if you remove the tubes and put sealant in the tyres

Opinion: Why You Shouldn't Care What the Pros Ride
Great article but "But mountain biking isn't like Formula 1: there are so many variables that can change from one run to the next that it's very hard to determine if one setup is "faster" than another." is incorrect as F1 changes from lap to lap and the set up for one driver is not the same for the guy on the other side of the garage driving the same car. Sorry, but while MTB being a mechanically based sport is quite complex, it's not anywhere close to the level of complexity of F1. Maybe as hyperbole the comparison works but not in reality. Not even close.

Rotor Confirms Full Details of 1x13 Drivetrain
@kleinblake: Too short a space to move a chain over several cogs. I seem to recall the Honda was 7sp initially and then upgraded to 9sp or something like that. Problem with gearboxes is that you have to either standarize (lol, that has worked so well in the bike industry) the mounting points/configuration or change frame and gearbox every time you change either unless you keep with the same manufacturer/model.

Video: Sydney, Australia Has Mountain Biking, But No Mountains
Great comment!!! It's the same here in Darwin... place so flat, but we have decent trails thanks to the hard work and persistence of a few. With the Wet Season here, many trails get destroyed or badly overgrown so they require constant maintenance and rebuild. If it wasn't for the efforts of a few heroes, we'd have no trails.

Bike Check: Joe Nation's Pole Stamina
@ctd07: This. So much of this. The only part where I have seen a sort of functional reason for such rough finish is Thomson seatposts (or any seatpost) as the machining marks help the post to stay in place. And even then, they are not that rough. It also depends on how the piece is made. If the stress risers are at a low stress area, it doesn't matter much. For example, you will only see scallops on Nicolai bikes at the inside of rockers or gussets
