Men's Top 5

1. Aaron Gwin
2. Danny Hart
3. Gee Atherton
4. Sam Hill
5. Josh Bryceland

Complete results at bottom

Aaron Gwin is the only rider who can stop Aaron Gwin at this point. He really is riding on a completely different level.

Gwin stepping out to take the top step on the box.

After a few days of sunshine and dry conditions at Fort William the rain started to come down about an hour or two before the start of the women's final. Track conditions went from hard and dry to wet and soft, with some definite slippery sections and greatly varying visibility.

Dan Atherton decided to race the DH here at Fort William this year after spending the season racing enduro. Not overly fast, but still in the game. His run put him 11th behind Bryn Atkinson. With 20 riders to go it was Bryn, Patrick Thome and Lewis Buchanan on the hot seat. Great run for Lewis, he held the hot seat for 16 riders until Bryn took it away from him. Brendan Fairclough looked good but tired, struggling a little bit to clear the jumps at the bottom, 2 seconds back and into 9th. It looks like the time off the bike really didn't do him well, he's going to need to regain a bit of fitness now. Greg Williamson down next, charging into the hot seat to take the lead by 4.178 seconds. Ruaridh Cunningham didn't finish his run, hopefully just a flat. Jared Graves on course, he was 55th last weekend in Val di Sole, could he improve on that here? Probably not, finishing 48 seconds back and into 52 spot with over 20 riders to go. Rider after rider cam down covered in dirt with slow times. Nick Beer way back at the first split then only 1.5 back at the finish. Steve Peat had horrible crash yesterday and almost didn't ride today. Watching him ride through the fog at the top it looked like he slid off the course and had to hike back on.

Aaron Gwin crashed twice yesterday in qualifying and started 61st with 20 riders still to come. 2nd at split one, but over 9 seconds up at the second split, charging! 9.654 ahead to move into the hot seat, would anyone be able to beat him? Sam Dale next, and only 7 seconds back of Gwin to move into second spot.

bigquotesLook at the conditions on the top part of the course, the cameraman's done good just to find him up there. - Warner commenting on the visibility at the top of the course.

Andrew Neethling up, and only half a second back at the first split, but 6.8 back at the second split, 8.127 back at the finish to move into 4th. Luke Strobel, America's other rider, 8.16 back at the second split and +8.958 at the finish to move into 5th. Junior rider Loic Bruni styling it up over the jumps and finishing +9.615 and into 6th, that should be more than enough to widen his lead in the jr category. 15 riders to go... Joe Smith moving up on his run, second fastest at the second split, 6.938 back at the finish to move into second behind Gwin, but still a lot of fast riders to come... Matt Simmonds pedaling hard down the bottom part of the course to move into 4th as the rain eased off. Leov on track, 25th at split one and +15 at split two and into 22nd spot at the finish. 17th spot for Jusso at the first two rounds, he's going to have to step it up a bit for the rest of the season. Mick Hannah looking fast at the top, and still charging at the bottom but +10 at the second split, big whip over the hip, +9.2 and into 8th spot at the finish with 11 riders to come. George Brannigan down next, +14 for 13th spot, and we're into the top 10. Will Gwin's time stand? That's the real question at this point.

Brook MacDonald, the Bulldog. He crashed at Val di Sole last weekend, and crashed here somewhere on the track, covered in mud. +38 seconds as he came through the bottom part of the course, styling it up and whipping every jump to finish 39 seconds back. It's still Gwin, Smith and Simmonds on the hot seat. Cam Cole 6th at split 2, seven seconds back. +7.564 at the finish to move into 5th, still no change in the top 3. Josh Bryceland on course and looking to improve on last weekends result at VDS. 22nd at split one but less than 1.5 seconds back. + 4.5 and second fastest at the second split, awesome style and only +5.058 back at the finish to move him into second spot behind Gwin, knocking Sam Dale off the hot seat with 7 riders left to go. Sam Hill on course dressed all in Pink on his Pink bike. Looking fast +3 at the second split and in second spot, he's won here before and wants it again. Pedaling hard down the bottom section, +3.532 at the finish to move into second behind Gwin and bump Bryceland into third. Will he make the podium? Six fast riders left at the top...

Greg Minnaar on course, he's needing a win here to take back the overall lead from Gwin, he's looking fast at the top, but he hit a rock and lost his chain at one point, +4.993 at the second split, and +5.123 at the finish. Not good enough to make the top 3, this will give Gwin a bit of a lead in the series now. Sam Blenkinsop next up, 17th at split one and up to 6th at split 2, he's charging. +8.03 at the finish and into 10th though, four riders left, Stevie Smith, Danny Hart, Gee Atherton and Marc Beaumont.

Stevie Smith on the track now, riding with a taped up finger that he injured at Val di Sole. 0.2 back at the first split, +11 at the second split and into 18th spot, +11 and 17th at the finish. Will any of the last three riders be able to unseat Gwin? It's still Aaron in first, Hill in second, and Bryceland in third at this point.

Danny Hart, the current World Champion, fastest at split one. +1.68 at the second split, he's looking really fast here. 0.834 back at the finish, faster than Gwin on the bottom section, but not fast enough, he moves into second with Atherton and Beaumont left at the top. It's now Gwin, Hart and Hill in the top 3 spots.

Gee Atherton on course, visibility is looking terrible at the top. Gee is +4.14 at the second split, +2.516 at the finish and into 3rd with only Beaumont left at the top, things are looking good for Gwin.

Beaumont leaves the top with horrible visibility, hard to see him on the track. Off track somewhere, he finishes +32 and it's all about Gwin here today.

Amazing runs from Bryceland and Danny. Although that track was favored to Danny, Gwin better watch out.

Britain's riders in general were on top form today! Well in lads! Congrats to Gwin, but all us Brits would've loved to see Hart win it, so close!

I'm getting tired with Gwin winning all the races... When I started watching the live I knew already who was going to be on the top of that podium...

Harts doing well, good to see hill on top of the pack again and gee with them, great group to have top tier....
I liked watching peat he is an all time great in the past, gee atherton is on a whole next level with his well rounded ness and bility (rampage and wc), and I dig watching any of them as well as just as excited to see them win...regardless to watch any of these guys hammer down is amazing.j

With that said "hahaha" I hope gwinn CRUSHES it.....

I have a feeling Hill is crawling back to the top, but he has never really been the same after that crash?
  • 29 2
Well if you're tired of watching Gwin remain at the top, the only way that's going to change is if someone else steps up to his overall level at the moment, and so far we haven't seen that. Sure, different racers have poked into first place here and there, but nowhere near as consistently as of late - and my point is that the bar Gwin is setting will hopefully spur tougher competition and make the races more exciting, which I believe it has so far. It's exciting to know that someone will really have to step it up to an insane level to dismount him from the throne right now, and I'm interested to see what happens towards the end of this season or next year.
  • 6 1
I'm still not sure how or where he found 8s in Val di Sole. Guy is quick quick and consistent. But you're right, development takes time and it looks like Gwin put his time in. I'm watching guys like Brosnan and Hart and even Conner Fearon in Juniors putting in their time now (I'm sure there are more I'm not listing). It's exciting to see the younger set and talent that's going to hit next year and the year after that. Good for the sport. Can't wait!

Although A-smalls definitely sounds like he's got a streak of redneck in him, he is right about representing your country. It's a WORLD CUP in the end, and there's a reason the graphics display the rider's home flag next to their name. National pride ftw, just don't be a doucher.

Special thanks to panzer103 and thepwnstar39 for knowing where im coming from and tom666 im sorry that you are either to cool to have national pride or that your country just sucks to much to show pride for.

Ignorant American is Ignorant... Blank Stare
  • 3 6
A-small you didn't do anything to become an American, dont be proud of things you didn't do. I dont under stand how people love there countries so much, you are forced to support them pay taxes to fund stupid wars and abide by there rules or go to jail, luckily i live in an alright one but take north coreia for example.
  • 6 0
 wheres north coreia?
  • 8 1
It's not that he's an ignorant American...he is just an ignorant human being, period.
  • 4 0
@ A-Smalls- I hear you too man, but you can't have national pride on pinkbike as an American! See below for examples:

mhailo(1 days ago): 3 brits in the top 5, woo! Happy for all of them, gutted for slugger! (+ 9 props and NOT American)
T1mb0(1 days ago) 6 in the top 10. rather puts everything else in perspective eh. Who cares if we're shit at football, we kick ass at DH! (+ 16 props and NOT American)
  • 4 0
An American trained by the American Eagle John Tomac, on an American bike, on American suspension winning the Commonwealth DH series is hilarious.
  • 6 1
No doubt, but not as funny as non-Americans on American bikes with American suspension, and wearing American-influenced clothing (i.e. flatbill ball caps with stickers on them is just one example) bash Americans just because...they're American! There are douches all over the world, but I don't see how "yah thats a WIN for AMERICA right there" warrants 55 negative props and pins someone as "ignorant". He wasn't talking trash on anyone else, just being pumped for his home team...whatev!

Speaking of racing, I'm pumped Joe Smith broke into the top 10! Met him back when he raced for Kona and he seemed like a class act.
  • 3 0
Keep in mind that it's not what you say, but how you say it. That's all I think need be said. There are classy ways of demonstrating pride and I think people here on PB who are American can get by without much criticism when done right. It should be the same for everyone else too.
  • 1 2
No your just brian washed, why be proud of your geographical location when you were born? give me a good reason, thankful yes but proud no.
  • 3 1
You're allowed to be proud of your country, you just don't have to be a dick and rub it in people's faces - because that makes you ignorant, annoying and dislikable. Hence 57 negative props.
  • 1 4
But i dont understand why people are proud of were they were born, its not an achievement. I have no problem with it aslong as your not a dick about it like you said, i used dont understand.
  • 6 1
Why doesn't everyone here who can't stand the cultural binding moment of a fellow American handing the Commonwealth everything but a 1st place ask PINKBIKE to take down the flags next to each of our comments. The United States of America is fifty different countries, economies, cultures, languages all collectively created by every defecting countrymen(woman) from every country around the world. America and Americans are made from you people. Then we bang each other and make new Americans that bang anyone who leaves their country to be Americans... then those kids grow up nice and strong and one day hold an American flag on the moon.. or Gwin a DH race or seven, an on and on so that it inspires other Americans to smile and so "yes he grew up in our country and did that". USA USA... are you guys really surprised at our love and enthusiasm for winning?

Our country is so young and pumped with more people leaving your countries to be Americans then Americans leaving to be not-Americans. Talking crap on other counties is a perfectly natural and healthy form of humor that if you cant handle, you better start learning cus Americans have a lot to look back upon for ammo. We will always love beating the commonwealth no matter how much we love English bands, Whistler, girls from Sydney and that Kiwi John Britten.

Yeah, can we back off the hostility for a little bit? It all boils down to the fact that at the end of the day, we are all one god damn race: Human Being. So act as adults, let your predispositions and biases down, and get along to enjoy this lovely sport. I'm all for camaraderie with ANYONE who's my fellow human being.

they put the cams in the open sections to give more coverage. if they put them in the woods, each one would get barely any footage. Better maybe, but nowhere near as much.

You can live with cameras and conditions, but Gwin ruined whole event yesterday, so no 'LOOK AT THE TIME'!!! excitement today
  • 5 1
Cameras in single track might sounds great, but from a production point of view I bet it's a right pain. I'm still happy to get coverage, it might not be the best, but it's better than nothing without a doubt!
  • 4 2
good race and win for gwin but not enough cameras tbh..
  • 23 0
Cable cams make filming the singletrack sections possible. I agree that they need to step it up. RC
  • 3 1
I think they had more cameras but for half of the race they couldn't see anything through the fog so they didn't show them? They went to the top camera for a limited number of riders. Can't control the conditions.
  • 1 0
a rider leaves the start hut every 30s or so. for them to have more cameras and too show us more of a run the gap between the riders would have to be bigger making the event alot longer. i agree a few more interesting camera angles would be good though.
  • 1 0
They were going to use a heli but i was to windy is what i heard, dont know how accurate that stament is thought.
  • 6 1
Ok, It's free so thats good, but must admit I liked freecaster production more. Why not show all riders, or at least 2/3 clips from all 30-80 guys and then full run from the best instead of some long crowd shots while there is racing going on? At least will serve as warm up. Also commentators were way too quiet and for most of the broadcast you couldn't even hear them. Feels like they should take thing a bit more seriously.
  • 1 0
visibility was poor they used the heli shots.. well they did whenever the heli cam could find the riders on the track... it worked when it wasnt too foggy but that wasnt all that often
  • 2 0
 there wasn't a heli there

  • 10 0
Good showing from the Brits indeed but lets remember this is their home track and they know it pretty bloody well! Gwin went down with around 29riders behind him, to put down that run so early and hold it like he did shows what a pro he really is. Others get close to him on the odd occasion but generally speaking this guy rides in another division he's humble and talks like a man who has his head in the right space, no matter which country you're from you have to respect that. FB is one brutal track!
  • 7 0
I cant get over how cool and down to earth he seems, he always looks so stoked with his run even in qualification when he slide out twice.
  • 6 0
Yup, Gwin is a beast... from being sick on Friday, then two crashes in qualies, and he still has the confidence+poise to lay down the winning run so early in the race.
  • 20 2
why the heck do they use the podium as the hot seat then give the flowers on the flat ground?
  • 9 1

I was a marshal at top of track and the mist was the worst I'd seen all day for Gee, Danny and Marc's runs, as they left my station I couldn't see them after 20m, Gwin def caught a break in the weather as I watched him all the way off the top section. That's not sour grapes that's the facts and that's the way it goes when you race on the side of a mountain. But good luck to him, no one can call the guy for catching a break, just look at the way he smashed the field by 8 secs the other week! Great ride by all the Brits in horrendous conditions tho, that took balls!!

  • 1 0
A bad day? So the entire rest of the field was havinga a bad day when Danny won?
  • 1 0
did i say that? No, but the fact of the matter is Gwin did catch a snow fence. if Gwin had not crashed twice in that run, Hart ends up 2nd. and you guys in the UK dont spend all winter on Danny's tip.

Well done to Gwin, was so surprised he won when we go to the bottom, never saw him in the woods in practice and he was nearly 12 seconds to Bryclands 9 seconds through where we were (fastest and smoothest by some margin though), which was where it went wrong for so many.

Just a shame Brycland can't pedal as well as the rest.

Bubblin the sticky after we reach out the seed, alaska and the skunkismoke then divide some trees. When i in the trails it either personal greed, london or canada cause newyork a freeze. I soo sure Gwin going to smash the rest of the wc season i can spit fire blaze instead of reading race reports.

Not to take away from the freakish results of Aaron Gwin, 'cause that man is a goddamn android...but yeah Danny Hart! Yeah!

Stoked that Hill is back. I want to see him smash a win. Who don't love a comeback?

Aside, this was one time when I was able to watch the race while not having read the results ahead of time. Thank you, Pinkbike for keeping the results within the article instead of within the headlines. *Tips hat*

Good to see loads of Brits doing well!!
  • 5 1
Awesome run Danny, you'll get your world cup win soon.
  • 3 1
For sure - well deserved indeed.
  • 4 1
seriously, how the hell is gwin doing it?! he beat danny and gee on home turf like, wtf?!
  • 3 5
 he didn't have fog ???
  • 6 2
I don't think the fog affected it too much, I doubt Danny would have got within a second of Gwin if it did. Both riders had amazing runs though.
  • 5 2
oh please... here comes the excuse train. First splits were close for everyone, so I don't think the fog was much of a factor. If anything, I'd say Hart had an advantage having just raced at FB and knowing the track inside out.
  • 4 1
there was fog for gwins run, then it cleared for a bit and came back
  • 2 3
i rekon it was the fog that made him bin it but on another not when he got to the bottom his back brake was pulling to the bar and his rotor was less than true... im guessing it was all crash damage but visibility became shocking for his run... gwin definately had it easier on that front still gotta love his style.... well i havt won the race so im just goin to pull the biggest whip on the jump that most people can see... love it!!

Danny's run was amazing considering how much worse the weather had got since gwin's run and how much the mid section of the track was getting destroyed. I was sat in the grandstand and it started raining again with about 10 riders to go. That should have been it over and done with. For Danny to get within a second of Gwin in worse conditons shows just how amazing his run was. Gee too. There is no doubting weather played its part on this one but that is racing and takes nothing way from gwin.
  • 1 0
I was on the top section for the whole race, you could always see for at least 100 metres ahead.
  • 1 0
I was at marshal station 3 the whole day and at times you couldn't see 20m and 5 mins later you could see down to the village! I watched Gwin all the way off the top section I saw Danny and Gee for about 5 seconds fact!
  • 2 1
It's really good to see the next batch of British riders (Joe Smith, Sambo and Simmonds) coming through so strong, just like Danny did last year. The future is very bright for British downhill, even with Gwin...
  • 1 1
I miss everything about freecaster. Just shoot part of the track in quali. Yeah, it's not really full runs, but at least you can feel like you're watching a race instead of a made for tv highlight reel. And who the f*ck decided to censor Rob? I don't even think he says look at the time anymore.

Yeah, I realize the coverage is free, but this season just hasn't been the same. I would be willing to pay a fair bit just to have what we used to get from freecaster back.
  • 2 1
red bull decided to censor rob WORST DECISION .... EVER!!!!!!
  • 6 3
 gwin for the win again...
  • 8 5
It's good to see another American in the top 20.
  • 3 1
Too bad...most crashes seem to always happen where we cant see it.
  • 3 0
They're closing the gap on Gwinn...
  • 9 1
On their home track they did, haha. Val Di Sole showed he's still doing something that the other riders haven't figured out yet so unless more tracks are like this one, he's remaining untouchable.
  • 2 0
You do know that not even British WC rider rides Fort Bill all the time right? It might be their home world cup round but it's not their home track
  • 3 1
^ So the announcers were wrong in saying that the British riders all had an advantage being at a track they were all VERY familiar with?
  • 1 0
I think scott means danny just raced this track earlier in the year etc.
  • 2 1
Some of the riders had been there for the past month getting ready.
  • 1 0
^ They must not be that serious of contenders if they spend their time there prepping for one race instead of traveling to Val di Sole...
  • 1 0
It's a 4 hour drive to fort bill from where Danny lives. 8 hours from where the atherton's live ! They only go there for race days just like everyone else!
  • 2 0
^ Well then I guess those WC announcers are a bunch of big dummies then, huh?
  • 2 0
It's more likely because they do more races there than just the world cup.
  • 3 0
if anyone saw beaumonts crash, please say what happened
  • 1 0
Don't think he crashed... article says he bent is rear rotor badly on the top of the track.
  • 1 0
Thanks but could that have cost him half a min by the first split
  • 1 0
He went down hard in left hand berm just after marshal point 3 at top of track, same place Steve peat ran wide. When he got up he was hitting his levers to get them straight before he set off again!
  • 1 0
 dang, thanks bro
  • 2 0
pritty tight race well done gwin, shame about danny, red bull getting there on the footage front
  • 2 0

  • 5 0
Look at the time! Whips dont win you WCs!?
  • 1 0
 you're right ^^ but it's different
  • 3 0
i wanted to see him get a little more sideways.. didnt care weather it was in the air or on the ground i know it was quick but its still way better when the riders have more flare.... otherwise you look as booring as gwin and THAT is why we need to get CG fixed!!!
  • 1 0
 The whip is here

  • 3 5
am i the only one who thought it sucked that the only showed the boring and uninteresting bits on screen?

just up top with fog ^^ and the new motorway section, nothing of the huge 4 minute sector 2 with all the technical bits... this broadcast was such a waste of time.... Frown
  • 3 0
Nobody is forcing you to watch the FREE LIVE coverage...next time just wait for the team vids a few days after then.
  • 1 0
Nope, you´re not the only one that though this broadcast was shitty, (the worst for a long time) anyway big up to all the riders, and my top three bet for podium only Gwin was a surprise for me.
  • 2 0

  • 2 0
Troy Brosnan took a hard crash in practice for the IXS Leogang, and had to go to hospital for some internal stomach stuff. Rob made a comment during todays coverage sugesting he was recovering well but don't expect to see him at the next event. get well Troy I'm defanitly missing watching you ride and I was looking forward to seeing you do well this season.
