About Jay Provins the Filmer/Builder:
Jay is well known in the Pacific northwest for his love for trail building and now growing love for filming.

About Smokey the rider:
Another Pacific northwesterner with a lot of history for simply wanting to ride no matter what. Smokey was an iconic figure in Whistler for years and now resides near Bellingham, WA. As long as he's got two wheels that roll, you'll find him riding. Here are a few words from Smokey about his good buddy Jay:

"This is not a bike review. This is not to tell you about the latest shiny bits you can get for your bike...in other words I don't care what size of wheel you ride. Or if you're on the latest and greatest carbon whatever... You could be on the most clapped out bike with no drivetrain. It doesn't matter. I've been known to roll like that on occasion. To me, it's all about riding bikes. Fall is in full swing and the dirt is All Time Brown Pow! Soon the Devil's Dandruff will fall from the sky, and the white death will blanket the trails.

The days are numbered, so get out there and ride your f#@%ing bike. Every chance you get! If, for some reason you can't ride... Grab a pick and a shovel and build some trail.

Over the past 5 years, I've watched Jay grow as a Rider, Builder, and Filmmaker. I have to say, he has become pretty damn skilled at all three. Thanks for the sick edit."

JFR,
- Smokey

It's better than Sail or Renegades. But seriously though...

I think he was referring to the brake squeal...
  • 15 1
It's like thanksgiving slaughterhouse out there Smile

I meant I generally prefer the natural sounds of bike and trail to a song during a video...and this was awesome!

 Probably avids!

No drive-train.... and after that day, no break-pads.

It can be done. There are a huge number of BMX riders with no brakes, and a few dirt jumpers too. I don't fancy it, but it can be done.
  • 36 17
I was referring to him riding the breaks that entire video.
  • 226 2
 Brakes, man. They're brakes.
  • 58 0
does he get a 30 minute break or a whole hour for lunch?
  • 30 0
Thirty minute lunch padded with two fifteen minutes breaks
  • 19 0
Could probably bleed a few extra minutes on that lunch break
  • 30 0
aww come on guys just give him a brake would you.....!!!
  • 4 3
 No chain - no gain!
  • 12 0
LMAO at all these comments. He needs to take a break on those brakes. LOL.... fuck I'm retarded.
  • 1 1
According to bikecustomizer he got no gain? Wait waaa
  • 33 0
I can't tell which is better: The frame or the socks.
  • 30 1
Warning: Wearing your girlfriend's socks will make your brakes squeal from embarassment

When you see Smokey ride you quickly learn the meaning of the saying 'it is the Indian not the arrow'. His skill and abilities on the bike are legendary, from jumping trains in Pemberton to dropping in on lines that most riders would never consider possible. It does not matter what bike he is on, he makes it all look easy, slow and relaxed. What stands out to me about Smokey is the man beyond the riding. He is one of the truest ambassadors of thhat I have met.

I bet you prefer the way they teach history in texas too huh?
  • 17 1
I'm just saying that for the sake of the saying, Indian works better. Yes, I know they're not actually Indians. I never said we should call them Indians
  • 6 0
Smokey is an absolute SHREDDER! Blown away each time I have had the opportunity to ride with him and try to hang onto his wheel. Great edit Jay. The trails are looking prime up there. Great work guys

Indians dont shoot arrow, they dance man
  • 15 6
How about this: Never use that saying again (for more many many reasons) and instead just say it's the wizard not the wand.
  • 9 3
Five hundred years ago a guy got lost looking for India, and TO THIS VERY DAY there are people who still think the locals he met when he was only halfway there should be called "Indians."

Seriously. That guy's mistake was five fxxking centuries ago. And people still haven't come to terms with it.

Pun fully intended.
  • 1 2
 Goddamnit. I prefer sheep.
  • 1 4
In history they were actually called Indians, no matter where you learn it
  • 7 0
Social justice warriors on PB, come on already, all you're doing is antagonizing those who are making innocuous and unintended errors. This is why people can't stand you! Example and education, use those instead of smart assery.
  • 7 3
Even natives call themselves indians... jeez, it's not like he said "n*gger"
  • 4 3
"Indian" is the word for "person from India."

India is an actual place, but it is on the other side of the planet.

We have known this for centuries, and yet we still get it wrong. Dumbest thing ever.
  • 3 2
While Inidians do come from India, history is written in the perspective of the conquerors and because of this native american's are called Indians in the history books whether you like it or not. So if you want to talk factually then saying "Indians" can mean two different things because from a historical perspective native americans at one point in time were referred to as Indians by Columbus. And since the history books are written from his perspective native americans can be referred to as Indians. So that connotation of indian fits the bill *rant over*
  • 1 0
SMDH at this whole string of responses.
  • 2 1
In other words, we've been wrong for centuries, so we can't acknowledge the mistake now.
  • 2 1
 Also, this:

We're wrong, but we're entitled to be wrong.
  • 2 0
What do you mean we're entitled to be wrong? Where's this entitlement coming from? I keep trying to bite my tongue on this thread, but it's damn hard. The wilful ignorance is painful.
  • 3 0
Sorry, that wasn't directed at you at all.

"Entitled to be wrong" was just a summary of DatGuy's "history is written in the perspective of the conquerors" post.
  • 1 1
India wasn't called India back when we started calling natives of this continent Indians. It was still a mistake but not in the way commonly thought. The meaning of "India" has changed since then. Now it refers to a country. But whatever, native american is fine by me too.
  • 2 0
Sure, the nation-state that we call India today isn't nearly that old. But the modern words India and Indian came from the name of (what westerners now call) the Indus river, which is much older than Columbus.
  • 2 1
A huge percentage of our words have morphed in meaning over the years. To me that is mostly irrelevant to the issue of whether it is socially acceptable term.

"Alleycat bike shop"…i know where i won't be going for my drive train components...
  • 21 9
hmm totally sick video Im a little confused though about who the builder was on that trail..... I am stoked to see a video of my trail but im definitely a little surprised at getting 0 credit = ) dope riding smokey as always
  • 11 2
Thanks for building such a great trail @lawsw (Wes Laws)
  • 4 0
yes, that trail is pure art
  • 11 4
Cry baby Trail building is thankless job Do it for the love, not the credit
  • 3 2
When you claim that you are confused about who built the trail and then state you are the builder, it kinda sounds like you need a hug from mom and a star on your door. Definitely more Mini Mac than Mt. Westmore.
  • 15 0
Just another move of the bike industry trying to convince us that we don't need a drivetrain. DRIVETRAINS AIN'T DEAD!
  • 16 3
sweet vid bro, like how raw it is
  • 9 2
I too loved how it was almost RAW. You can hear all the bike sounds very well, but some nice music to give off a great vibe! Well done @JayProvisMedia
  • 3 0
Yep , that trail is dialed too , unreal
  • 12 0
 Gwin would approve!

I used to ride with Adam waaaaaaaay back in the day in Whistler in 02/03, he was crazy back then, running his disc brakes to paper thin and tires to the wires but man he was fast. Respect.
  • 10 1
He puts the Pinkbike in Pinkbike, and how.
  • 3 0
"I've been known to roll like that on occasion".... I think he went without for like 9 months a few years ago and still whooped our asses. Smokey is awesome and Jays filming and editing is really getting tight.

Regarding the comments about riding brakes.....trust me when I tell you those trails are steep and you wouldn't be able to keep up with him!

Google Pemberton Train Gap

I'm probably in the minority but i think the paint job on that frame is awesome! Not too sure about his socks though.....

Everytime I see one of these videos I end up insanely jealous of the rest of the world (or the rest of the UK for that matter).

Not a lot to ride where I am, and nowhere legal to build. That's why I got rid of my normal mountain bike and just have a jump bike nowadays.

On a side note, that frame is pretty spectacular
  • 1 0
I live in Chicago, I bet I have less to ride than you.

(Only time Ive ever wanted to lose a bet.)
  • 1 0
Having not been there I can't comment.

We'll agree both places suck for quantity of riding....?

So good. Love he bike. Love the attitude. Trails are all time right now and I loved the look of that trail. So funny tho. His disc breaks sound like he is running rim breaks. Lol I'm sure you would run em anyways.

  • 1 3
New to the scene so I have never heard of him; but, he must be a legend to have so many people willing to position themselves all the way along the trail to capture his entire run. I could learn a thing or ten from this guy so "hey guy, next time you need 'trail cam waiters', let me know, i'm in, hashtag me!"
