Knolly Knation Builder Program

Think back to the last time you had the feelings of excitement, pride, and honor when you first got your new bike. You may have ponied up and purchased it off the retail floor, from a buddy, seller online or maybe even a hand-me-down. Regardless of the generation of ownership it was new to you and stoke levels were high; not because you have a cool new toy to look at, but because of the anticipation of heading out for a ride... even if you didn't know what kind of experience was yet to come.

Think for a second, what if you didn't have a place to ride your new bike? What if there were no trails, bike parks or local riding spots? What if your only refuge in the saddle were on dusty roads and industrial pavement?

Builders. They help us come full circle on the joy and excitement of bike ownership and experience. If it wasn't for dedicated builders who dig trails or push the boundaries of bike parks we would not be so stoked on what biking is to us, individually.

At Knolly Bikes we appreciate the hard work, inspiration, and collaboration required to put a section of trail together for riders to enjoy. We're a growing company and we create an incredibly sophisticated product with tons of room for growth. As we continue to grow we look for ways to support the building community which is why we are launching the Knolly Knation Builder Program.

How it works?
We will sponsor builders globally. Similar platform to our Knation Grassroots Racing program we will be signing up dedicated builders and trail associations that want to be part of the program. Sponsored Knation builders will have access to our Builder packages which will include deals on our bikes along with gear from our like-minded partners.

Applications will be treated the same way as athlete sponsorships, they will be reviewed and considered for the program. We want to focus this on the dedicated trail builders working hard not for the spotlight, but for a high five, for a beer at the end of the day, or for the simple pleasure of first tread on a self-built trail. This program is aimed at the unsung heroes that deserve respect and an opportunity to be rewarded for their efforts.

Team rider Garett Buehler is no stranger to building his own lines. He's a pro and arguably his job is to build but he puts in his time on local trails that he never shoots on. Only a few would likely hit this handcrafted beauty with this much style. Photo: Margus Riga

We will have two categories for sponsorship. First is individual, Local Heroes. Applications need to have some examples of your work and minimum two references. Second are those who are registered builders with trail associations. Once the association is registered every builder on their list will be eligible for the program. For trail associations, we encourage the president/acting manager to reach out to submit the application.

Locally based in Vancouver with the Knolly brand being born on the North Shore we're happy to be working with the NSMBA as our first signed association. All members of the NSMBA are eligible for the program and have been signed up.

Trail Builders are the life force behind all trail networks, builders are part craftsmen & women, part artist and part visionary. They are always 100% invested in creating and improving our experiences as riders. Their collective and individual imagination, dedication and relentless work ethic enable us to ride and push ourselves and our bikes into realms sometimes not imagined. They provide excitement, trepidation and “that” feeling which only comes when you are one with your bike.

The North Shore Mountain Bike Association (NSMBA) is proud to partner with the Knolly Knation Builder Program to support, thank and express our gratitude for the commitment each of you bring to the North Shore

Showing that the program has Global reach we are also partners with Brain Terrain operation out of Austria doing some great work. Check them out at www.brain-terrain.com.

We have been footballing the idea of how to support builders for a couple years. We’re excited to launch this program as the first step of a larger commitment to support trail builders globally. We have mad respect for anyone who is engaged in the craft and while this program may not work for everyone, we hope it will support anyone who seeks to enjoy its benefits.” - Ryan Berrecloth

Next steps for application:
- Local Heroes: send email to ryan@knollybikes.com including who you are, where you build and examples of your work.
- Trail Associations: send email to ryan@knollybikes.com listing your association name, location, how many members and where your group is focussed on working. Examples of the work are encouraged.
- In the subject line please put "Knation Builder Program Application".
- Ryan will review all applications and work directly with each applicant.
- Sponsored builders will then work directly with our sales team to finish the play.

Important to note that any sponsorship deals where the builder lives within a 10-mile radius of an authorized Knolly dealer will be brokered through the dealer.

Building a gnarly drop in

Team rider James Doerfling builds lines very few would have the courage to tackle. Seen here building one of his lines for his segment in "Builder." Pro riders that build their own lines are a solid motivation for some to pick up a shovel and build to their own skill level. Photo: Margus Riga

We have five EVOC Builder Bags up for grabs. The first five sponsored builders that jump into a deal will get a bag for free! For the other members will are working with EVOC to provide a sponsorship deal on their bags and trail worker suits. Further details will be provided once you are signed to the program.

There it is folks. If you are a builder and you want to join the program send your application to ryan@knollybikes.com. See you on the trails!!!!

For all builders out there, a big thanks from the crew at Knolly!

 Can we nominate a builder(s)?
Most builders I know are not the type to enter themselves.
  • 14 0
was thinking the same...also a good way to minimize the "ooh me me me...Look I'm awesome, pick me" entrants. Just require third party nomination.

Trail builders are do-ers not pink bikers.
  • 16 19
@unrooted: speak for yourself I build Trail at least 2 to 3 days a week.
  • 13 1
Absolutely! Thanks for tabling this. We understand that lots of builders will not put their hands up or some may not even involve themselves into media outlets online. We're stoked to have any nominations come our way for consideration. Hit Ryan up and he will work with you on the nomination. Thanks!!!!

Ryan and Knolly supported a very dedicated local hero, Don munsell here in cowichan who has put so much work into volunteering on trails in the Cowichan Valley. ...Don is loving his new warden bike and major kudos to Ryan and Knolly for showing don such appreciation and support. The Knolly nation program is bang on

Riley, Means a lot coming from you considering the work you have put into building. The progress you have made with your local community program on the island is amazing. Thanks for the props and right back at ya! Stoked to hear Don is digging his Warden!

This question is for the Canadian folk... Do you guys have many limitations when it comes to building trails? Seems like the Forest Service down here allows an occasional "trail reconstructing" day but very little in the way of actually letting people build trails. If we attempt to build a trail on our own recognizance you effectively get banned from public land. I watch videos like Builder and think, there is no way they would ever allow such freelancing in the States (at least not in AZ!). If you guys want to sculpt some trail what all has to be done on the paperwork side?

Thanks AirBud. Safe to say we are not experts but local trail associations such as NSMBA are so they are best to answer these questions. One of the many reasons we are stoked to partner with trail associations globally as there's some great work being done to garnish community support and funding for trail development.
  • 3 1
It depends. In the North Shore there are multiple landowners so there's not just the one agency like you have with the Forest Service. GENERALLY speaking the landowners here are quite a bit more liberal in terms of permitting building and the type of trails we are allowed to build.

Long story short on the Shore there are many who work through the NSMBA to work on trails. There are also many independent builders (like myself and every builder in West Vancouver/Cypress) who independently get permits and/or do their own trailwork and are not affiliated with an association

Its different for every area in Canada though

Hi @AirBud - I can only offer anecdotal evidence, but some areas of Canada are very progressive in trail building while others are really difficult. I have been lucky enough to be working with the Alberta Parks in developing some new trails (stay tuned!) and they have been nothing but supportive. In fact, they are actively trying to find us money for equipment and even outsourcing a bit of our building to a professional trail building company. That being said, there are also significant areas where there is conflict over trails with the result being several pirate trails, a whole bunch in a legal grey area, and a bunch that while legal have little to no governmental support.

It is all related to the extreme concept and practice of "liability" in the laws and courts of the US. In the rest of the world you are required to use your head to avoid danger, injury, or stupidity, in the US the owner of the land or producer of goods (i.e. bikes, microwaves, etc) can be held liable in the event of its misuse and injury to the user. No wonder with private and public land managers are reluctant..
  • 1 0
In Alberta (kinda like Colorado and Montana, but colder), you go through various government bodies, depending on who the land manager is. It helps if you're a registered non-profit or charity (CMBA, MMBTS, GBCTA, CAMBA, CTA, FoKC, BVMBA, etc.) and will carry some liability insurance ($2M+). Ask permission, submit a proposal, go back and forth a bit, build the trail. It's over-simplifying things, but that's the gist.

Build without authorization and get caught, it's anything from a fine to time depending on whose jurisdiction you fall into. If you don't get caught, things are... different.
  • 1 0
Totally depends on where you're building. B.C. Is approximately 95% crown (public) land. In these areas it is often quite easy to get permission to build a trail though the forests lands and natural resource operations offices. I put in an application (section 57) which grants you permission to build a trail which only requires a GPS track of your proposed trail, a map ( Google earth screenshot) and a simple double sided form.

Way to go. Building with various entities (like NSRide) really makes one think about how one rides trails and not destroys them. Glad to have Knolly promote trail building, which in turn makes riders appreciate the effort gone into the trail.

So classy of Knolly to recognize trail builders as a integral part of the MTB community and reaching out to support their efforts. I'll be nominating a few local grinders for sure.
  • 2 1
I'm all over that! I have broke my back building and can barely get a beer out of it, and now a chance for a sponsorship to help me build to stoke other riders- BRING IT! You'll be hearing from me soon!

Awesome to see a bike company step up and represent builders. without trails being built there would be no place to ride, congrats Knolly on stepping up support and i will hope to talk to you soon .
