Cheers to 5 years! It's hard to believe, but Lone Wolf Productions has been shooting videos for 5 years now. In order to pay homage to this accomplishment, I decided it would be a novel idea to take a look back at where LWP started. It's been said many times that history repeats itself, so I thought it suiting to re-shoot in some of the same places that the very first video was shot, giving a then and now perspective. Looking back at the very first video I have to laugh at a lot of it, but it's promising to see the progression in the cinematography, camera quality, riding, editing, and overall polished look from then to now. It makes me wonder how things will look in another 5 years.

Light popped

I'm often asked how Lone Wolf Productions began. The answer is that it was a simple evolution once I started riding my bike on film. I was shooting for the New World Disorder series when the thought first came to me. At the time we would set dates to shoot, a film crew would travel to the location, and we would have to battle the weather and time in order to come up with enough footage to create a riding section. It was all an amazing experience, and I had the opportunity to meet some of the most intriguing and influential people in the bike industry during that time. However, I began to wonder if there was a way I could take control and give myself the freedom to shoot whenever it was most beneficial to me?

Waiting for light to pop and doing drone test runs.
Contrast of fall light.
The struggle and second hit... light still was not cooperating.

It was right around this time that the first GoPro Hero was hitting the market. I have to credit GoPro with being a big part of the inspiration for me to begin shooting my own sections. The way I saw it, their cameras were simple enough for any novice to use while still allowing for original and interesting HD footage to be captured. My original concept for Lone Wolf Productions was to purchase several GoPro cameras and allow riders to shoot their own sections, giving them the freedom to create their own content which would then be posted online.

After thoughts.......... Its never in our vision to see a crash but always prepared. Always a breath of fresh air once we can dust off walk away and reflect.

It was a fun way to produce videos at a low expense. Pinkbike jumped on board and gave me plenty of support in the way of exposure on their home page, and I know Lone Wolf Productions wouldn't have become as well known without them. Many different companies in the bike industry also began to jump on board and helped out with riders to shoot and sponsorship deals. It has been wonderful to have support from the bike industry coming in for what was originally just a hobbyist with a few GoPro cameras.

Since then things have come a long way. I have had the opportunity to shoot many of the world's best riders, work with the best companies in the industry, and learn a lot about cinematography. Lone Wolf Productions has gone from a hobby to the best job in the world. The most interesting part is that the learning aspect never seems to end, and I constantly look forward to acquiring new techniques and shooting new subjects. I hope the next 5 years will be as enjoyable as the last 5 and pass by at half the speed. Cheers to 5 years!

Look like they're on their way to becoming a big productions company. The edits they're putting together are super sick.

So much better than the 100 Whistler edits put out each year! Natural raw and hand-built

Looking forward to more vids, Matt, great blend of angles! The fail at the end reminds us wannabes what is before us to get anywhere close to those mtb skills. And, I gotta get one of those bike racks!

It is amazing over the almost 10 years of the Rio trail being filmed, the essence and character has not changed. the way that it has been filmed and presented has changed though. and the different ways that it can be shot can bring a fresh look at it.
