The Nelson mountain bike scene has been at the forefront of the freeride movement since it was started in the late 90’s. Several riders from Nelson have been able to make it to the highest level of freeriding. These local trails and riders moulded Kurt into one of the best riders in the world. Kurt launched himself onto the global mountain bike scene after winning Race Face’s Ultimate Freeride Challenge when he was a teenager.

Over the past decade Kurt has won some of the biggest competitions in the world and has been part of some of the biggest mountain bike movies. In an industry where careers tend to last only a few years, Sorge has been able to ride and compete at the highest level.

After years of playing by someone else’s rules Kurt got together with several of his closest friends to create The Fest Series. He has been able to bring the best freeriders in the world to his hometown to compete in a contest that bares his name. Hoffest brings the new freeride movement to Nelson and gives Kurt that chance to share what he loves about his home town with the riders who are closest to him.

Polygon is excited to be working with Kurt and Mitch Cheek from Solos Productions to give people a behind the scenes look into Kurt’s life.

In the name of german engineering I want to apologize for our cars. Its embarrassing that our cars still dont have the biker-friendly-auto-pilot (the one that drives the car to the end of the trail) that every north american car seems to have.

sounded like there was a lack of energy and happiness on the movie...

@todesengel at least german cars arent made of plastic, like most japanese cars and quite a few american cars currently.

I first seen Sorge do the "flat-nac" about 5 years ago. I don't think I have seen anybody pull this trick like Kurt can. Sorge is the man and when he rides it is filmworthy.

 Hello Giant 27.5+ team!

 Nice try bub.

The few things that redeemed the Toyota of bikes was their bang for buck pricing (at least here in Aus) and their two great riders Sorge and Hart.
  • 3 0
 Reece wallace???
  • 1 0
And Yoann Barelli, he's not a freerider but he shreds.
  • 2 0
Never said any thing about anybody not shredding. Every giant athlete shreds no doubt about it. But is barelli going to go rep giant at rampage or joyride? No he is a. Enduri racer not free ride
  • 1 0
True forgot about this guy. Yeah he's Good
  • 1 0
He is definitely not a freerider, I was actually commenting on choppertanks comment
  • 24 0
You could eat dinner on his tables. So flat
  • 11 2
Yeah but surely your chips will fall through the spokes?
  • 18 1
 ...so Sorge's a Polygonist now?
  • 6 1
@worm-burner. in my country a polygonist is someone who lives in houses given by the goverment and all the drug dealing etc stuff. it would fun to hear is the same there haha cheers

Damn! I reckon we could solve climate change right now, get rid of the coal fired generation and harness all the power we need straight from Kurt's riding!

so smooth and effortless.. love the flat nac.. on a big bike that's designed towards traction (though his suspension might be set poppy..)

stay out of trouble and stay healty for the rampage please Smile

My hometown kicks ass. Always try to give Kurt a nod hello when I see him, even if He doesn't know who the hell I am. Chatted with him briefly last year during Hoffest downtime(it was raining alot then), super nice guy!

So is the claim that "freeride" started in the 90's or that this is when freeride found Nelson?
Is freeride defined as jumping mt bikes on hand built trails? Triple crown required? Mutually exclusive or both?
  • 7 0
I think that most would agree that the term "freeride" was first used in mountain biking in the late 90's. Most people have a different definition for what freeride is, for me personally it started on a fully rigid bike and has evolved over time to include a number of different bikes. The statement "The Nelson mountain bike scene has been at the forefront of the freeride movement since it was started in the late 90’s." doesn't really make any claims. Nelson and riders from Nelson have been featured in pretty much every major Freeride MTB film since forever.

Cool..I only started riding in my later 20's (10years ago), so cool to learn mtb history.

Hopefully pinkbike does a review of polygon bikes.
  • 1 0
There was a review done last year on our 160mm travel trail bike. The bike Kurt is on in this video is still in the prototype stages, but we hope to have it dialled for 2016.
  • 4 1
so bad ass! just biking, sweet music and good filming. no stupid special effects or montages haha. yea dudes!

  • 2 0
kinda strange to see his Wheels on the Ground after all this Fest Series/ Evil Knievel insanity !!!!
  • 1 0
also rips it when he is on the ground ... who knew?
  • 3 0
Ahh if only loam existed in Australia...
  • 6 0
Start planting pine trees & in 20 years will have some
  • 5 2
Great riding, Awesome location, so-so video production....
  • 3 2
I think less-polish was intentional to go with the style of the video. I like this trend because it emphasizes the insanity of the line and speed. The high-buff post-production movies tend to diminish what riders are accomplishing cause it looks so smooth and seamless. That said, I still enjoy something like lifecycles...
  • 2 0
solo normaly kills it but i thought this was a little off for them. seems like they used the same shots alot of times just from different angles.
  • 3 0
I have been in the film/photo industry for awhile. you can still do a clean edit while showing the riders talents. the POV cameras were really off the drone shots were off. it kinda felt like a news station shot this with all the zoom ins and outs. along with the un smooth panning. solo stuff in the past has been great. this just seemed like a rush edit and filling repetitive shots to fill in the length of the song.
  • 1 1
I agree.. I was not that impressed. Yo Polygon, if you need some more filmers, PM me!
  • 3 1
let me guess.. you guys like the slomo, pan out and show off you tight pant shots.. Well done SOLOS.
  • 2 1
You guessed wrong. Slomo gets over used. I get not every video on here doesn't have to be cinema quality, but I do expect more than a go pro used for every shot.
  • 2 2
 go ride your bike dude..
  • 2 1
Hmm, can I not defend my opinions?
  • 2 0
Sorge has a lot of style. I've enjoyed him in lots of films including Where the trail ends series. Excellent skills.

There were a couple of times where I thought he was going to drift into the tree next to the landing. He just kept going farther an farther ... I wish I could hip like that ... hips don't lie ...
  • 1 0
The rock jump is massive. Cheers
  • 1 0
Loved it, Kurt killed the riding as usual! And that polygon (other than the rear shock area) really reminds me of a demo 8
  • 13 0
Kurt is an amazing rider ... we are working on a no chain option similar to the demo ...
