Crankworx 2013: Women on Bikes

Aug 12, 2013 at 4:44
by Richard Cunningham
Whistler has a higher percentage of female riders than we have seen at any other riding location. While the enduro was in full swing on day two, we spent some time in the pits capturing images of some of the women who were on the mountain.

You have a point! Id kill for my girl to ride like these chicks, andI'm sure a few of them would school me on the trail! I was just waiting for Halle Berry to be siting there on her Devinci in a bikini... my expectations were a little off! lol

 Liar! Wink

@Bigbossman: You are right on the money!!!! A girl that doesn't have an athletic background, and especially one in sports like biking, skiing, surfing, or skating, isn't going to pick this stuff up as easily as a girl who does. My present GF (bless her heart) seemed to think that just because she commuted on her bike everyday she was up to the challenge of mountain biking. She gives it an honest go, but she doesn't have any understanding of that whole body-english thing and it's holding her back big time.

... all except for the 6th picture ... that yellow is an attention grabber. :-D
  • 7 8

  • 7 4
Evil? where? I just saw something round and yellow and...
  • 2 1
I didn't realize I was doing that until after I read your comment. Pretty funny!
  • 1 1
Makes you wonder what's under that helmet??
  • 28 3
You guys are all crazy. Most of us girls don't ride to be some downhillers girlfriend, or to be some hot chick on a bike. We ride for the same reason you guys do...cause there is nothing like shredding down a mountain, hitting the perfect line, flying through the air, or spending your entire day on the mountain knowing you are doing exactly what you want to do. It's a shit shot trying to be a badass in a male dominated sport, especially when all those males are judging us like you guys are. If you are gonna judge us, judge us the way you judge eachother, that's all we really want.
And just to clarify, I was also looking at the bikes first.
Also this is not an angry message, but an informative one Wink

Mwart- It's a JammyPack. She's rockin' tunes while she rides.
  • 1 2
RC did this... no wonder it's full of brown-baggers.
  • 134 1
O sure it's a photo essay when RC does it, but when I do it there's a restraining order and 200 hours of community service.......
  • 6 1
Thank you. Best line ever. Smile

great to see so many women riding bikes, especially the ones bringing thier kids along! Guys ,refrain from commenting on their looks,i'm sure they want to enjoy the sport without being looked at like objects.
  • 18 1
At the risk of being given a lot of neg props you made the best comment on this entire page. Fair play for seeing it how everyone should
  • 2 1
 @mjgneely great comment!

Comments like these are why I avoid getting my photo taken when riding. For some reason guys seem to think that girls are supposed to be done up with hair and makeup looking stunning even while doing active sports. Let's be honest, if you're truly into it, you're probably not wearing any makeup, you're probably sweating, rocking greasey helmet hair and wearing non-flattering bulky gear. The girl you see that is wearing a ton of makeup with her hair done probably can't shred and is doing 1 lap then heading to the patio. Pick your battles - you can always dress up after you ride.

Claire Buchar is hot without any makeup or anything
  • 1 0
 Damn straight she is!

I'll never forget my first trip to Whistler, and getting passed on A-Line by a bunch of girls wearing sweatshirts that said "I like 8 inches in the rear". Smile
  • 1 0
 I wouldn't loose that train!
  • 16 0
Great to see Claire Buchar riding again, after her accident

Thanks pinkbike for putting up some pics of real ladies out doing their thing, this is the stuff that can get us ladies stoked to get out to the park. Bonus points for the little lady rippers too!!!

To the douche's that are commenting about attractiveness... the bike park is like the gym boys, do you like the ladies there to kick ass, sweating their arses off, hair and makeup all a mess; or the prissy gals with the makeup perfect and 2 inch fake nails and tans that run 5 minutes on the treadmill and spend the rest of the time chatting with friends... no issues with either type of gal, just these are pics of the chicks that are in the process of kicking ass!!
  • 2 0
 Agree.
  • 7 0
aww you're right guys, I totally should have done my hair and makeup, not eaten for a week and made sure to pick out my skimpiest outfit just in case I got my picture on pinkbike...oh wait...I was too busy riding my bike! Choke on my dust suckers Wink

I just love that more and more women are getting into mountain biking and downhilling in particular! I also love you, Pinkbike, and you, RC, for posting this great compilation of photos of real ladies who are actually out riding and not just posing for Instagram with their boyfriends' bikes. Smile Thank you, thank you, thank you!
  • 3 1
Neg props for genuine stoke about a feature? Ha ha, whatever. Smile

Would have been nice to have some info with the pics so we know a bit more about their story.
  • 1 0
My thoughts exactly, I don't really see the point otherwise. On pinkbike, I thought this would be begging for a comment shitfest.

 @Sharonb,
here's one story at least. In the 17th picture down, the woman on the right wearing the Sea Otter Classic jersey with the Rocky Mountain DH bike is my friend Heidi. She works at Mammoth Mountain as a mountain bike instructor in the summer and a ski instructor in the winter. She won the women's expert class in the Downieville DH in 2009 on an 80mm travel/narrow flat bar/high post XC race bike. She's crazy fast downhill and I can guarantee there will be guys getting in her way and slowing her down all day long.

The girl with the evil is lovely
  • 1 0
I am proud to say i have a girlfreind that lovez downhilling only sad part is it doubles the cost on parts and bike gear well worth it to ride you favorite run get to the bottom and turn around and see ur girl rippin through the trails that u were just flyin threw make u proud and sorry girls but hot girl in gear is like triple scoop of my favorite icecream so girl keep ridin u make the mountians beautiful
  • 2 0
Heard that.... To al the naysayers: yep it costs twice as much money and bike maintenance time, and probably more since my wifes bikes and gear are even nicer than my own, but it is sweet to have a gal that is stoked to ride with me. As for the inevitable DH injury, my wife cracked a rib in the park and was riding trail a week later.

This friend of mine can shred..She has more balls than most of the guys whom I go trail riding with. She can keep up and she really enjoys riding...To the point that she blocked her mom from viewing her trail riding albums in FB just so she can keep doing it.

I saw more ladies riding in Whistler this past week then I have seen riding DH anywhere ever! I thought for a bit, oh ya! Lots of girls ride DH! But then I realized they were just all in Whistler for Crankworx. And not just girls with bikes, but girls SHREDDING those bikes. Raced a couple of the girls in the pics above, super cool. Drank beers at GLC and talked shit with the best of the dudes, too. So much fun. Can't wait to do it again.
  • 5 2
Jesus the girl with the yellow top on looks hot wich she'd remove that helmet !! not bad bike either
  • 5 0
 I see yelloww
  • 6 2
Something about a tight yellow shirt...
  • 3 0
Honestly, this would be a bunch more interesting and less creepy if we were looking at the bikes, too.
  • 2 0
I was at Fernie the weekend before last, and I'd guess that 30-40% of the riders were women. LOTS of girls out, so awesome to see!
  • 3 0
I saw tons of women riding. Wait. No I didn't, I didn't see any. Well one, but that's all.
  • 1 0
The only problem with me getting my girlfriend into the park is all you chaps asking for her number! .... Ha ha. She is a pinkbike girl now so about to get WAY worse .... All my own fault
  • 1 0
Love to see the ladies rippin on bikes! Most inspirational was how many older (cough cough) mature and AWESOME women are in the game. I have 25+ yrs myself and nothing will keep you younger than to keep shredding!

Off-topic perhaps, but can anyone identify the bars in the fifth photo down? With the Thompson stem - it looks like there's a weird angle/join instead of the usual sweep?
  • 2 0
Good eyes hoonton, looks like a straight, chromoly H-bar with the grip sections TIG welded on at the sweep-back angle. I'll do some research on that. RC
  • 2 0
Got it - and its a Canadian bike maker that does the handlebars.

OOOPS, HAHA!. Well, Ohio is probably close enough to Canada to buy cheap tires for your F100.

Totally not meant to be derodatory what so ever (didn't dawn on me for a second)! Just super stoked to see all these ladies riding burley gear. I'm realizing that it's very difficult to comment without it being twisted into something creepy. Well...that freaking sucks! My apogolies for any offense, it was not my intention. Respect ladies!
