Stans S1 wheels 2016

Stans No Tubes may have forged tubeless tires into a reality for mountain bikers with its breakthrough sealant and tape systems, but wheel goods are now the highlight of its business. Stans’ quiet and persistant march towards perfecting the tubeless mountain bike wheel has gained the brand industry wide respect - and a busload of international victories in every mountain bike discipline. This week, Stans announced the culmination of a project which took over a year to bring to fruition: The S1 series wheels, which are made from 6061-alloy aluminum rims, extruded using the same durable profiles as its Crest and Arch designs. S1 rims are available in inner-widths, from XC/trail 28-millimeters, to Plus-width, 38-millimeters and are laced to Stans' Neo rapid-engagement hubs. Spokes are still Sapim - just like their high-end wheels use - and all S1 wheelsets will retail for $455 USD. Stans' press release is repeated below. - RC

Stan's S1 Wheelsets

NoTubes is proud to introduce a new series of wheels designed to bring their patented tubeless technology to an even wider range of riders. Built for long life, low maintenance, and outstanding value, the new S1 series wheels feature 6061 series alloy rims and are available in six different widths suited to more types of riding. With an emphasis on value and durability, the new S1 alloy wheelsets join a mountain wheel lineup that currently includes Stan’s successful MK3 premium alloy wheels and innovative Valor and Bravo carbon series wheelsets. While MK3 wheelsets are built to balance strength, light weight, and stiffness, S1 wheelsets will focus on maximum strength and durability. The deeper profile and thicker walls of the new S1 rims result in a 50 to 70 gram weight increase over MK3 rims, but offer greater impact strength for an even wider range of use.
Stan s rim profiles
Stan's low-flange rim profile stabilizes the tire laterally and lowers rolling resistance for all types of tubeless tires.

bigquotesThe goal was to take everything we've done for tubeless technology, and put it into a truly bombproof and affordable wheel. - Chris Currie, Stans Creative Director

Construction and Features

Designed according to Stan’s WideRight rim and tire fit system, S1 series wheelsets will be available in six different rim models, with internal widths ranging from 23mm to 38mm. Combined with Stan’s low-profile, high-volume Bead Socket Technology rim design, these widths let the new S1 range accommodate tires from 2.0- to 3.5-inches. All S1 wheelsets will be built with 32 spokes, front and rear, Sapim’s proven Race spokes and Secure Lock brass nipples, and Stan’s faster engaging Neo hubs. Hubs will be available to fit most axle systems, including Boost. All models will be available in 27.5 and 29-inch rim sizes, and select models will also be available in 26-inch.

The new S1 series includes reinforced versions of the classic Crest, Arch, and Flow - names already familiar to fans of Stan’s tubeless rims. In addition to the new Crest S1, Arch S1, and Flow S1, three entirely new, wider wheelsets will be available. The Sentry S1, Baron S1, and Major S1 offer Stan’s patented Bead Socket Technology, bringing tubeless performance to the largest mountain and Plus tires.

Fairly light, fairly strong and affordable. See bike industry... It is possible
  • 4 1
Pretty good specs for the price on these, prolly can't beat them for preassembled wheels. For comparison sake I built my own using LB Carbon Rims, MTB/MTR hubs, DT Revolution spokes. 30mm internal width, $608, 1564g for the set. Have put about 400 miles on them so far, through some rocky shit, I took them in to true them after 200 miles, they were out of alignment by 1-2mm in 3 spots, amazing. They blow away all previous wheels I've used, in performance, weight, and maintenance.

Please tell me you forgot to mention the 26" version of the Flow S1 and Arch S1.
  • 2 3
we are left with the same 23mm inner I am still using on my Mavic X-Max SX's but they are true UST without spoke holes and they have better spokes.

I kept saying stuff like that but eventually gave up and bought a 27.5" bike. The industry won.
  • 2 1
@johnnyo5: I'm not giving up yet!

Anyone running the flow ex rim for DH? It's appealing cuz of the weight but wondering how it really does for DH.
  • 3 0
Yep I did for a while, I had mine on Hope hubs. They were great, strong and light but depends on your riding style i suppose I ride quite light and don't race.
  • 2 0
 non-issue
  • 2 0
@tbgd: I have the flow ex with hope hubs on my AM bike that I ride at Mammoth a lot, zero issues. I even found a spoke completely loose and the rim was still relatively straight.

I built up a set of the new flow's with I9 hubs for a bikepacking trip this summer. 540 miles across the entire colorado trail with a fully weighted bike and still spinning straight and strong. The new 29mm ID is pretty rad with a wide range of tire sizes.

I have Flow ex wheels with Hope Pro 2 hubs. I did a lot of downhill this season and so far they are really good...no dents, still straight and no loose spoke.
  • 3 1
I find the Flow EX for the rear on a DH bike not quite burly enough. It did last barely a season but I but on a DT570 and that thing is bombproof
  • 1 0
I've been running the flow ex wheels on my hardtail (2016 ragley bluepig) and ride predominantly DH trails. I had an issue with the rear hub internals but got that sorted and warranteed. No problems with the rims denting or coming out of true and I'm about 180 and ride pretty hard. They are stans rims on stans hubs bought as a wheelset

I had several in 26" on my Demo. On the back i had them for 10 - 40 Bikepark Days. (on the front it´s a non brainer) Would buy them again but my next test in the same weight-class is the EX471. Hope they last for the rest of the season.

Ive run the same set of Flow ex's laced to Onyx hubs for the past 2 seasons of bikepark and am only now replacing them. They have slightly cracked at some of the spoke holes but have remained fairly true.
  • 4 2
Take a look at DT swiss ex471 also
  • 4 5
killed 2 sets of stan in a year bike parking. My second set I cracked the rear wheel in 3 runs. I dont recommend them, the dt swiss ex471 has been pretty fantastic but are very expensive.
  • 2 0
They've been well tested on the DH race circuit including world cups. I am sure they will be completely fine.

Use them with Hope's and Wheelsmith spokes on my DH bike right now, in 27.5. I am a bit smoother of a rider, but all we have in SoCal is rocks. I even hear them ding time and again, and so far they're perfect. Straight, no dents. And if you lace your own wheels, Stan's are awesome. They're really easy to lace up, and setting tires up tubeless is really easy. They're a win all around for me.

@jaydawg69: I had the mk2 version on my trail bike and they've held up but are not in the best of shape, Wasn't sure what the mk3 version was like. My DH bike has 570's on it and after a season of railing on them I've yet to even brake a spoke, not the lightest of rims though. But I'd rather run a little heavy for bombproof.
  • 1 0
I do and I'm not disappointed. I love mine!
  • 1 0
@ibishreddin Also check out the new EX511s...if want a 30mm internal width.
  • 1 0
I have the Flow EX on my DH rig. I'm going to use them again for my next DH build. I'm around 150lb. They are awesome if you want to keep your bike on the light side, but they won't last long if you are 200lb and pound through rock gardens or land sideways after whips.
  • 9 3
To bad about the hubs, they suck!
  • 2 0
are there issues with the hubs cracking?
  • 2 0
@jdendy: the freehub completely destroys itself!!!!!
  • 3 0
Just get a custom built wheelset on Crc, a pair of stan's flow ex mk3 laced to hope pro 4 hubs with dt swiss spokes costs around 500€
  • 4 0
 @cyclingsi:
I've heard this is an issue with the Neo Ultimate and not the regular Neo. Have you experienced a failure with the standard Neo hub?
  • 3 0
@SoDiezl350: Yes, neo hub not ultimate, i know of a couple of other people whose neo hubs have also failed.
  • 4 0
that's why they are usually mated with Hope hubs
  • 1 0
My Neo hubs are working great...
  • 1 0
Not saying this is necessarily accurate BUT...I did have an issue with the first generation Neo hub that Stan's promptly resolved under warranty and also threw in a spare XD driver. I spoke with the guys at Stans and was told they did have some issues with their production in the early release of the hub which was resolved by designing a tad more material into the hub shell. Mine have been working great since. A proper long term review on PB would be nice.

 Rim only? Price?
  • 7 5
I don't really consider $455 wheelset as an affordable one. Maybe like $350?
  • 10 0
"Value" might be a better description - given the quality of Stans products and this pricing they represent a good value for a set of wheels
  • 1 0
Finally! Hope this is a success, bike pricing has gotten ridiculous. Can all the other manufacturers please take note and start offering similar please?
  • 3 0
No enduro 26" wheel set. sad face.
  • 2 1
Good luck getting more than three rides out of their Neo hubs. Utter garbage.
  • 1 0
Stans rims are the reason Hope made their own Enduro XC/Tech rims. Strong and durable and similar weight to these
  • 1 0
Flow S1 (DH/FR type) are pretty nice. But i wish to see laser signs rather than stickers.
  • 1 0
Remember when a 32mm rim was like 1000$, and a 24mm rim was like 200$? Peperage farm remembers.
  • 1 0
Flow s1 or sentry s1 for all mountain riding ???? Mmmmm dilemma I guess.
  • 1 0
 Floooow
  • 1 0
455$ per wheel or per pair??
  • 1 0
 I`d assume for the wheelset
  • 2 1
 stans i love u 3
  • 1 1
MMMM I have bene loving my flow mk3s on 240s'.
  • 1 0
 I take the rims, thanks.
