Silvia - Winter trails with Matt Hunter

I felt the ice the cold air sting the inside of my lungs while the spikes in my tires sliced into the frozen earth. A cold wind whispered alongside the powdered trail and my toes went completely numb. Though certainly not typical descriptive terms for the majority of my time spent riding bikes, these situations were standard issue for a short while this past winter. With the gift of studded tires and an invitation to film with Silvia, Hunter brought us far beyond the confines of the usual riding season and deep into the winter's darkest nights. With tire studding expertise from GP Moto and the brilliant blaze of Niterider Lights, we rode the snow covered world of local trails and Ron Penney's farm as if it were still as tacky as spring. After a winter's worth of frozen fingers and late nights in the frigid forest we realized yet another amazing new place our bikes can take us.

There are many reasons why I like it when Matt Hunter comes out with new videos. This is a great example.

I love Matt's vibe he gives out in all his videos, and his riding style is so sick. He is definitely my favorite free-rider to watch!

you need to buy metal self taping srews i put around 200 on each tires, the best is not to put any on flat spots i put 2 rows on each side, make sure there are not too long you just want the sharp end coming out of your tirs knob, then you put duck tape inside your tires or an old air chamber cut out in half, it works without but i was getting flats. its a great activity to do while watching tv. you can ride those tires on a frozen lake or an ice rink and you wont even drift at full speed when there new.

flag taletotell (Apr 6, 2012 at 5:48)
I found 100 per tire to be plenty. Also why self tapping? By the time you buy 400 self tapping screws you could just buy some studded tires. I picked up some sheetmetal screws with nuts and they where great. I would also suggest you look at how the tire is shaped when mounted on the rim and inflated before you pick where to drill your holes to avoid wasting screws. I went to narrower rim and my outer line or screws became extraneous.
Save this tech tuesday for next fall though or people will just forget next time around.

Last winter I studded mine, used lath screws, but I also chopped them down much shorter than he had them, then lined the tube with another spent tube just to keep the abrasion down on it. Takes a lot of time, but it is worth it. Matt Hunter is the man! love it

its only 20 dollars for 200.... whatever works for you that just my experience after building 4 pairs i have learned with my mistakes, i just like the sharp end of the self taping screw you dont have to buy self taping thats just what i like. i dont like the studded tires they make, the studs are round.

Back in Maine one time we pestered the guys at the tire store until they sold us carbide studs. No threads, and nice thin flat heads for the inside. I had to make a special hollow needle/punch but it worked great. Then as luck would have it the worst ice storm in history hit, and glazed the entire countryside - 14 inches of snow encased in four inches of ice. The entire state turned into a skating rink, and the dog and I spent all of January riding. Trails, fields, hills, streams, you could go anywhere. It was like riding through a crystal chandelier.

do you need to drill a hole for the screw?? will the self tapper not just find its own way through??

I got goosebumps at 2:42 - 2:46! Unique camera angle, he's soooo fast, and music matches perfectly.
"i don't know what more to ask for", he's like flying away from all the worries at that moment and that's what mountain biking is about.

Making studs is dead easy, just like it was shown in the video. I made mine by drilling the tyre with a 2 mm drill, then screwed in 2,5 mm screws, the heads must be dome or round, mind you (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw#Screw_head_shapes). I used 9,5 mm length for the middle and 13 mm ones for the side knobs (i used some old tires, one was a scott manx, the other was a hutchinsons barracuda i think). Duct taped the heads on the inside and rode like a champ.

On frozen ground the thing really, really grips. When it got warmer, i had problems pedaling up, since i didn't have enought grip. On the way down the conditions were perfect for some doriftos. Though my lenght choice made the bike kinda squirmish under braking, yet when i leaned her on the side, the longer studs gripped more and i could rail the turns. Drifts were still possible though.

I recommend for all winter riders, though i think it works best on packed, frozen terrain. You might want to use a size smaller tyre to not scratch up the frame (which will happen anyway, when you're inserting the wheelset), so it won't be that good in deep powder.

I am soooo bummed it doesn't snow here in Laguna...we have to ride on dirt, dammit! And, it takes over an hour to get to some decent snowboarding - what a chore! (please note sarcasm - we are very fortunate). I agree with all of the above on Matt Hunter. Something about his riding style....
