Plymouth University

If I asked where the best place in the UK was for Mountain Biking, most people would say Wales, with the occasional Scotland or even Sheffield called out. But it is a little known fact that far down in the South West, Plymouth and the surrounding area boasts some of the UK's best riding, and has a buzzing Cycling scene to rival anywhere.

Sports club's and societies are a huge part of being at Uni, whichever one you pick you want there to be a club full of like minded people who want to shred just as much as you do. So here are five reasons why Plymouth should be your only choice...

1. The Uni club is one of the best around
The club broke 100 members for the first time this year, making it one of the biggest and fastest sports clubs at the Uni. We have everyone from national racers and sponsored roadies down to those complete beginners.

Every year we take part in the British University Championships, which is paid for completely by the club. It’s basically a two day uplift race at a national level track (Combe Sydenham, Rheola previously) with a relaxed and almost festival like atmosphere that has quite possibly some of the rowdiest hecklers around.

There’s our laid back members only race series for Downhill and Cross Country, and Tuesday night time trials for roadies have been massively popular for those of you of a lycra persuasion. Weekly rides are run on Wednesday’s, Sunday’s, and generally whenever anyone wants to ride. Combine into the equation our socials and there are few clubs that can be a match!

2. So many local riding spots to choose from!
Whatever type of riding your feeling there is somewhere to go ride in Plymouth or in the local area. Nearest by is Cann Woods which is an old spot that’s recently had some near trails added to it by locals. In here there is anything from lengthy gap jumps and techy trails, to rollable tables and longer XC routes - and only a 30 minute ride from uni.

Gawton Gravity Hub is a 30 minute drive away and club members frequently organise trips up to ride the steep tracks like Super Tavi and Egypt. With a fully running uplift (by Flyup) and club members receiving a discounted membership, you can’t ride any better trails for less! Check out next year’s Chairman Pete Robinson riding the infamous Super Tavi below.

Dartmoor, Exmoor, and the coastline offer up some spectacular Cross Country and Road riding routes if being assisted by gravity isn’t really your thing. Just 30 minutes of riding from the Uni campus and your into Dartmoor already, where there’s an endless amount of single track waiting to be discovered. If none of this takes your fancy then Haldon Forest is only a short drive away as well, which has plenty of challenging XC single track too.

3. Buzzing local scene
Plymouth really does have a fantastic local scene, with lots of Bike shops including a lush cafe on the city’s Barbican called Rockets & Rascals. Pop in here for a coffee and a look at some retro yeti’s! There’s also Plymouth CX which organises weekly Cyclocross rides, and both Silverfish UK and Koo Bikes are located in the City.

...

Each local riding spot has a great community, none better than Woodland Riders (now known as Gawton Gravity Hub and one of the clubs sponsors), who are in charge of both the Gawton and Tavi Woodlands riding sites. Check them out on Facebook- facebook.com/gawtongravityhub

4. Lot's of racing!
Even if you’re not super fast and not that keen on racing, everyone who wants to can take part in the British University Champs. This year we took sixteen racers and two marshals (one dressed as a hot dog) to the Downhill event, even though deadlines were looming, for two days of nice weather and great riding! BUCs is known for chaos and the XC Champs of 2011 highlights this perfectly!

Over the winter there is the Soggy Bottom Cross Country race series, Cyclocross races, and a Winter Downhill race series at Gawton Gravity Hub. The past three years has also seen an Urban Downhill race through the University campus, which last year attracted hundreds of spectators, and race entries included a ticket to see Hadouken in the Student Union afterwards.

5. It’s not a bad Uni either...
So apart from riding you should probably base your decision on how good the University actually is. Plymouth is a really modern Uni that’s recently invested a lot of money in the Student Union, accommodation, and a massive new marine building. It’s a middle ranking Uni if you take notice of the league tables, and has a male to female sex ratio of 38:62 which boosts your chances!

It’s the biggest Uni in the South West and the campus is pretty big, ideally situated in the City Centre and a two minute walk from the Halls which are not based on the campus. Bars and clubs are roughly twenty metres from the edge of campus and the drink is cheap, but what else did you expect?

Couldn't agree more. good DH Team, Awesome XC team (When BUCS get their shit together) and a blossoming road team.
Aside from the teams, the local riding is great. Once out of the city centre, a 20 mile road ride is possible with one set of traffic light and never going further than 5 miles from the campus!!

Can you link me to that route Rich? Might use it to add some miles into the commute when I don't want to do too much. Also, traffic lights piss me off Razz

Hi...Tim was right, I had no intention of running another event. That said I have been approached from senior management to ensure the event (or something similar) occurs on an annual basis. I'm in the process of finalizing details and writing page upon page of risk assessment but once things are more concrete I will be releasing information. Along the same topic, thanks Tim for the mention above!...a few figures to satisfy people - spectator numbers have been in excess of 5,000+ and rider numbers around 300+ over the 3 years that UDHC has been run. Between the university and my self we have some very exciting plans for the coming years so keep an ear out!

So true! Another thing to note, of the 30 or so minutes it takes to get to Cann from uni, only 5 of them are on the road, the rest are on dedicated cycle paths and sustrans trail.

Well said, probably one of the best groups of people you could meet make up the club as it currently stands as well. This can only get better next year!

Nailed it! So true about the Uni and the riding!

 When is the next udhc?

Not sure if there's going to be another one now, the guy that organised the event has some other plans that I think he's concentrating on now.
  • 3 4
if you guys are promoting cann as somewhere to ride, you could always help out with looking after the place...
  • 4 3
Wow. Have you been living under a rock for the last few years? Past and present club members (some of whom actually created the the trails in the first place) have devoted tonnes of hours into maintaining Cann, so you should really get your facts straight...
  • 4 2
Just because we don't turn up to the dig days that have only started in the last 6 months or so doesn't mean we don't help out. Hence why we have tools stashed up there...
  • 2 5
i know previous years have helped out loads, but for a while now we've seen no one up there.. the dig days are organised by the warden who has idea's on which way he wants cann to go, if you guys came up you would be able to see what the plan is, rather than just building bits here and there... and that has been raised by a few people, not just me.
  • 2 5
also, if you want to be funny about it, i'm fairly sure as an organised group going into cann you guys should have a permit from the forestry commission, which i'm fairly sure you don't. if you read into the rules etc as well you would see that holding organised races etc is one way to get everyone kicked out... i don't have an issue with you guys in anyway, it was just a simple request not really sure it required a sarcy reply...

well timyo. you couldn't be more wrong or more out of your place!!!!! james has not been living under a rock!!! it must be you who goes through life with there blinkers on!!!! i've lived here most my life and been using cann since 1999!!!! i know who the people are to thank for investing time into that place, thank you very much!!! fact of the matter is cann is not made out of concrete and does need CONSTANT renovation. i couldn't care less if u picked up a shovel once n moved a bit of dirt!!!!! i don't believe for a second u have! sorry dude ur just too young. iv'e been riding cann way longer than you've been in plymouth and i don't really know you! but anyways james is completely within his rights to say "if your promoting cann as a riding spot u should lend a hand in the up keep!!!! if you do have tools stashed up there, what is the point??? no work (other than work i've been there for) has been carried out in well over 6months in the cann woods area! if your are building out of the designated area this needs to stop NOW!!! as the local community ranger is loosing his shit over douch bags building outside the designated build area!!!!!!!!!
  • 4 2
Well this year we have barely been at Cann because of our regular trips to Gawton, so it's not like we've been riding a lot there. I admit we haven't helped out as much as previous years, but it's still a contribution and shouldn't be criticised. Regarding being an organised group I've spoken to the warden and he has okay'd everything with us being there, and they're not organised races.. just simple fun. As for you vtec, I've seen your name pop up in the Facebook group and it's a shame you seem to keep being quite so confrontational. Your claims of no work being done without you in the last 6 months are just quite simply put, wrong. We haven't done anything outside of the designated area, and to be honest, I just don't feel like we have to prove ourselves to you.
  • 3 2
and what else did you really expect as a reply? It's definitely one way of irritating people.
  • 1 0
I'm not posting this to get into any arguments, but I want to make one simple point.

"i couldn't care less if u picked up a shovel once n moved a bit of dirt!!!!! i don't believe for a second u have! sorry dude ur just too young. "

Sorry, I've witnessed not only Tim, but many members of the clubs pick up many shovels and move many pieces of dirt, resulting in many trails being in much better condition than they previously were and new trails being built.

"if your are building out of the designated area this needs to stop NOW!!!"

Club members all know where they're allowed to build, and where they're not. We all understand respect the rules. We all obey the rules.

Thats all I'll post here, if you're not happy with the truth, then I'll leave you to claim we're "too young" to pickup a shovel.
