Doesn’t it seem that no matter where we go in the world of extreme sports, be it an off road dirt bike race or a freestyle mountain biking event, there never fails to be some energy drink company out there promoting drinks that are bad for our health? Some energy drinks may taste alright and get you feeling amped up for a good hour or two, but any top performing extreme rider would tell you that this is the last thing they would put into their body before or after an important event. Last year, a company based in San Jose, CA launched a new line of fruit drinks that appeals to local youth riders mostly because of its clean ingredient panel and healthier perspective on what riders should be putting into their bodies. StarNectar drinks taste similar to Sobe or Tazo Tea drinks yet contain less than half the sugar and only natural ingredients. Also, each drink is infused with 250mg of Yerba Mate which provides a naturally occurring form of caffeine that doesn’t cause jitters or an “after high crash.” To make their drinks stand out even more on the cluttered beverage shelf, StarNectar has also customized each drink based on peoples birthdates by putting a few ingredients in each bottle that are harvested in the same month as when you were born. Instead of naming each drink after a month, StarNectar names each drink after a Star Sign and calls them Custom Cosmic Health Infusions. “I could really care less about my star sign but I think the idea is cool that the drinks are made with healthy ingredients that get harvested in the month I’m born, plus they taste amazing!”, said local StarNectar rider Shelby Paget.

Are you f*cking serious?
Who markets an energy drink to hippies? They're all too busy drinking mushroom tea and yerba mate or good old fashioned water.
This is a super good product idea. Only problem is:
a. the marketing sucks balls.
b. it's already been done (one example is Steaz products, which hare already available in Canada)
don't get me wrong, I may come across as a bit incredulous, but it's only at the marketing strategy which I feel is drastically misguided.
The product itself I feel is a great idea! I love energy drinks for their advertised energizing qualities, and would immediately switch to one with lower sugar content and a monosyllabic ingredients list. However, lets face it, your average consumer is more concerned with the look of the product and its desired effect than its delivery method. That's why rockstar, monster and redbull put so much time and energy into very very similar ad campaigns. The energy beverage industry's target audience is not the type of person who knows their star sign, (quite the opposite in fact), and I feel SN are more likely to alienate potential buyers from a product which they both want and need.
