It would be a lie to say that we aren’t constantly inspired by all forms of biking, whether it’s BMX, slopestyle, freeride, or even road. Last year, Brett Rheeder’s first Sony ActionCam Dream Capture episode, Airs and Alleys, was heavily inspired by a trip produced by BMX legend Ruben Alcantara where he placed portable ramps throughout an urban environment. This year, when we were presented with the opportunity to film with Ruben in his hometown of Malaga, Spain for Rheeder’s second Dream Capture episode, there was no chance we were turning it down.
Every single spot Ruben shared with us blew our minds. Whether dirt or concrete, there was no shortage of natural rideable transitions. Watching Rheeder and Ruben shred lines together was like watching surfers session a perfect break - everything seemed so effortless. It was a great reminder that at the end of the day we all just love to ride bikes. As Ruben would say... “It shouldn't matter what wheel size you're riding as long as you're having fun!"
We were all honoured to have the chance to film and ride with Ruben in such a stunning landscape. He is the true definition of style and class and we can’t thank him enough for his generous hospitality during our stay!
maybe if he actually paid for his bike other than opened a box and said "yeah new frame " he wouldn't throw it like it was a worthless regardless of the caliber of trick . @simonsilver now bailing and moving the bike as far away from you to ovoid injury is another story . toss that ish !!!
@driftmonster - as @simonsilver said, I think circumstances such as that make it exempt! Stop moaning. I'm sure he's bought and broke many a bike in his time anyway.. no one starts out with sponsorship!
Brett Rheeder must be a pro bike chucker, the way the bike hit the ground was nothing. Maybe some scuffed bar grips and tires, but the bike looked fine.
Voted to below threshold . I hope they next time one of you tosses your bike it costs you a master cylinder in your brake lever . Then we'll see how you see it
driftmonster, its not polite to try and curse all of us, wishing broken cylinders and all. thats witchcraft, black magic, and you know what happens to witches, right?
Throwing your bike 10ft isnt exactly going to snap it, when you consider hes jumping some big ass jumps. Is he not allowed to hang up because he didnt buy the frame? Can he not throw the bike and bail imcase the bike gets hurt? When ur as good as brett rheeder maybe companies want to give you bikes to throw about
@driftmonster, that dude opens a free bike box because that dude doesn't sit on internet forums talkin' shit about nothing. He's the best in the world & he's from Onterrible of all places. Not BC, not Cali, but butt f*cking Onterrible. It's his bike, he can do WTF he wants with it you dolt. Fvck me you're worse than a certified fvcking Nazi. Of all the things to whine about. Just GTFO you stupidiotarded douche bucket. If you can't respect someone that pulls the shit Rheeder does, wins the way Rheeder wins & represents the way Rheeder represents, then I'd love to know how much respect you think your worthless ass is entitled to. :s
if i landed a flat backflip off that little building onto a concrete tranny i would have wound up like an olympic shot-putter and thrown my bike 4x as far as rheeder did, brake levers be damned. i would throw it like that because the day is done, nothing more to see or do, the winner has been announced
Gotta love Ruben's face when Brett tells him that the other bike is a gift, it was priceless, not to mention the benefit to to Trek! The high vis jacket for making alterations to street objects works nearly every time, we have used the disguise for taking out skate stoppers and putting in cement transitions. Imagination is key everything is rideable with a little bit of thinking.
I'm not sure if you folks have seen these film's made by Joe Rich it is the Fox racing Andalucia series, some very imaginative riding and talented riders.
@ mecabeat Yeah man 4 or 5 back to back, better than textbook 3's down a definitely not straight line of steep and deep doubles is not something that you see every day.
"You could be in the worst mood ever and jump that thing and... your... gona be pretty psyched after for sure" Chase Hawk is the true master of understatement but his riding just shouts style. I'm still torn between weather this vid or him getting through 9th st trails clipped in to spd's is his best.
I got to ride bmx with Chase when he came to London some years back on tour - the session at Brixton Beach (Brixton skatepark, London) was mind blowing
Never seen someone throw such a long, lazy 360 over a massive gap that most people would never even see.
Just shows you don't need a 6k RED's to make online docu-edit's. High frame rates and incredible riders and a wicked sound track (The Heavy kick ass, if you dont know them, go listen, they'll make you rider better than you ever have, they're from our home town, Bath UK) with a production crew that instinctively know how to put together something mind blowing. Loved it!
First video this year that i watched 4 consecutive time and still feel my spine tingling. Riding was spectacular, also was the filming and editing, I think this is my reward today for coming to work on a holiday, (it's chinese new year celebration day here)
Ruben's part in Etnies Forward is the reason I started riding bikes. I ended up riding Mountain Bikes and to see Ruben on a 26 inch Dirt Jumper is special. That's right ...I said special.
I think it is great that so much respect is being paid to Ruben Alcantara in this article and video. But it's a real shame that Ruben hasn't seen nearly the kind of financial payoff that Brett (someone much younger and certainly less influential on freestyle riding period) has. The reason for this isn't that Brett is a better rider, but that he works in an industry which is much richer than BMX...Ruben could easily have gone the route of Darren Barrecloth or Brian lopes and used his BMX talent to sandbag the MTB world, but he hasnt...and in so doing, will not reap the kind of rewards that the sponsored career rider will.
I'm having a hard time seeing how mountain biking is more lucrative than BMX. I doubt Ruben is hurting for cash. Have you had a personal glance at his income statements?
I work in the cycling industry, friends work and have been let go from the BMX industry; and while I can't speak for Rubens exact income, I can assure you that the BMX industry is MUCH poorer than MTB and that Ruben's take home pales in comparison to top MTB athletes.
That's because Ruben isn't competitive any longer. While you may be right that there's more money in MTB than in BMX, I seriously doubt that any slopestyle riders take home more than Garret Reynolds or Harry Main.
Ruben's legend status does not come from his competing days (when he rode for HUFFY!) it comes from the time he spent riding for core rider owned companies like T1 and Fly..BMX as a whole isn't about competition, its about progression and culture...much like skateboarding and snowboarding, bmx salaries are based on the popularity and relevance of the athletes to the broader bmx audience (those who support product sales).
The Shaun White's of the BMX world don't make up for the lack of money in the industry as a whole. Those large contest earnings don't come from BMX companies they come from larger corporations using bmx to sell their products (right guard, go pro, red bull etc...) my point is that the MTB industry is much richer...which is what I wrote above.
I think Rheeder gave him a bike as he is one of, if not the most influential BMX rider the world has ever known and progressed BMX and in turn MTB in their parallel disciplines more than anyone else.. "give a bike to 'someone' " maaan
Excellent edit, when they showed the slow-mo on his flip drop to bank, I was looking real close at his insanely close head to roof lip ratio.
Nice work BR... nice work indeed.
That was sick, so good to see tubem still at it, love seeing bids of bmxers riding with mtbers, the slight different riding dynamic for me makes it very enjoyable
This was sick. The ultimate edit would be Garrett Reynolds with danny mac. The best bmx street rider in the world with The best mtb street rider in the world.
I'd say being the first person in the world to pull this in the streets is enough of a reason to celebrate.
The bike is fine, it has no effect on you at all so get over it.
That flip was nuts but it's nowhere near the first ever done. Watch some more street edits and you'll see plenty. I hear you @USMC and thanks for your service for the country.
Im not sure if you realize this but that was a front flip, a trick that was first done down a set several years ago. Many slopestyle and trails riders have done front flips of drops. The front flip of flat drop is generally considered easier than the back flip. Backflips of flat drops are also much newer to the sport and have never been documented on a legit street set up.
These are the reasons that video you linked is irrelevant to this conversation.

Great to see Brett and Ruben ripping it up together

number 3 is my fave due to my love of trails but all are sick and share Joe & Rubens soulful take on BMX
