The first Mini Downhill event of 2016 was as exciting as ever, with new and top riders wanting to start the new year with a podium finish. The weather conditions played a major part of the day with rain throughout the night, making the track slippery and challenging. For round two, the track chosen was the famous 'Sheepskull' trail, a favourite track among local riders.

The dark forest was made even more challenging as sunlight flooded through the trees making the track tougher than it already was due to rain in the days running up to the race. Most racers opted for mud tyres, even though it's a very pedally track.

The most technical part of the track was about halfway down, just before you joined the road. A big crowd gathered so see some of the best crashes of the day. Riders were taking different lines but the middle was the fastest, most challenging of the day.

'Hecklers Roots' as it was called was in full force with people either side. Some of the crowd decided to add a little more pressure on the riders by bringing some air horns along with loud mouths.

There were 16 rippers this weekend, showing that the UK downhill scene has a bright future ahead. One rider that caught my eye was 6th place finisher, Rudi Eichhorn, his Shredder bike was on full attack this weekend and helped Rudi to his best finish yet. He was the youngest and smallest rider of the day.

Local ripper, Seth Barrett was unlucky today, with a chilled first run, his chain came off on his second run and cost him the race. "although my chain came off, I can take many positives out of this weekend with a fifth position. The Bird Bike felt really stiff while still being light, making it perfect for aggressive riding."

Jay Little was unlucky this weekend, pushing hard with a solid first run. "I was feeling really good in my second run and knew I was pushing as hard as I could. I'm pretty gutted that I crashed close to the end because I really wanted to win." Jay was looking to start off 2016 season with a win. Although he crashed, Jay still secured 2nd in Juniors. Overall, the 329 riders that took part all finished the race, making it a good day's worth of racing for everyone to enjoy. It also shows that the future of 'grassroots' downhill racing is here to stay!

I've ridden that trail in a 120mm hardtail 29er. I'm not super fast and would likely get slaughtered in a race but it is a whole lot of fun.
