The Keystone BME stop has always been one of the riders favorite venues of the series with some of the most raw, long and rugged lift-accessed mountain biking terrain in the US. With rock gardens, drops and high-speed features, there will never be a dull moment on your bike, and for spectators alike to enjoy the action. Our freshly designed 2016 courses will challenge riders to the fullest and combine the top trails on the mountain, along with some unique track designs and a $4,000 pro purse. Throughout the weekend, expect to see six rowdy stages with some pedal transitions, a non-stop festival taking place in the village, Oskar Blues beer flowing, and entertainment for the entire family to enjoy. Also for this year's Big Mountain Enduro in collaboration with Keystone Resort, we are bringing families the first kids enduro race with special courses for those under 12 years old who want to get into the enduro racing experience. Check out all of the action July 9th and 10th at the second stop of the 2016 BME.

Just throw in a stage down the Lenawee trail and that will cover any complaints that there isn't enough pedaling.

I herd they tried to do just what you said, but the Forest service would not allow it. Frown permits and BS stop fun

@racecase: How great would that have been as a kick off to day 2. It makes sense that the Forest Service would be concerned about 300 trail users in one day. I'm not sure how that would work, could there be some sort of agreement to do trail maintenance afterward? I'm sure this sort of thing has been proposed in the past, but it seems like there could be some trade off to allow use of more trails.

But that would not be within keystone. Not saying it wouldn't be an awesome stage, just saying.....

Are they actually going to have an enduro race this year or are they just keeping it as a lift-assisted downhill race on shorter travel bikes?
Unless I am wrong I thought enduro races had pedal transfers....

Some races have more lift assist such as Keystone and some have more pedaling such as the Snowmass BME. I raced both of them. Variety...each course is different. It's a good thing. Some XC races are not much more than dirt paths and some have gnarlier rock gardens and descents. Some DH course as slow techy and some are 45+ MPH with long straights and huge jumps. It's all good.

@bman33: Yeah I agree on variety, but enduro came about as an alternative to DH, it was branded as "all-mountain" racing. Having different courses and variety is good, but I figured they would at least stick to the core purpose of the racing style. In the case of Keystone it kinda seems like they went away from all-mountain that and just have a few different downhill runs and no real transfer pedaling stages. Kinda seems to take away from it being "enduro", but that's just 1 opinion.

@ianswilson815: yeah, I raced Keystone a few years ago. it was staged downhill racing. I think we pedaled uphill for maybe 10 minutes. Wasn't a big fan, haven't been back.

I think the Keystone race is great. Some of the best runs on the BME circuit in Colorado with examples of flat out, techy sections, etc. Very fun to ride each stage. I am not sure why anyone would dislike less climbing to each stage. Races like Crested Butte, Snowmass, etc. offer riders plenty of chances to climb to their stage such as the first stage on day two at Snowmass. Obviously that race gives advantage to riders with a better fitness level. Whereas races like Keystone are a bit less cardio and more bike handling. Would be boring if all race venues had a prescribed amount of ______ type of terrain and no variety

@bman33: Dude, I think they should keep the techy, tough sections with great bike handling needed. But, I think there should be proper transfer stages. Otherwise, how is it any different than a stage-based downhill race? The point of enduro is all-around with both bike handling and fitness, thus the transfer stages. If you put the pedalling in at Keystone then you would still have the gnarly timed runs but with actual transfers added in. I am sure Keystone is a great race, but why take the endurance part out of enduro?

I'll be racing my V-10 with a reverb!

All good. Part of the enduro equation comes in with making sure your bike makes all those stages in one piece. Another part of the equation is the climbing on the transfers. Ebbs and flows. As long as we ride/race and have a good time doing it.

So many words being used here in Colorado that actually have no value behind them... enduro races on downhill courses is just a small sample. Come to Trestle for "Freeride Friday" --- just know that there's no free ride (a ticket must be purchased) and that freeride is not allowed (you will get reprimanded for cutting trail and/or creating your own line).

Pedal transfers aren't necessarily a prerequisite for an Enduro. Just look to the French races. I think the BME having many different types of races in the series only adds to its appeal personally.

@briceps: Yes, agreed. Well said. Variety is what makes a great series and allows different people with different skillsets to be competitive.

Those of us that did the Santa Fe BME have earned a race with a little less climbing than usual.
  • 2 0
@LukeBurgie: All the respect. I was thinking about doing it until I saw 7k of climbing.

I could see them using Keystone Gulch Road up to West Ridge down, finish off on Red Trail into the ranch area to make those that like pedal transfers happy. However, consecutive top to bottom race runs at KS is no walk in the park. Try racing Cowboy Up, Motörhead, Paid In Full, Wild Thing and River Run linked together for a last stage and y'all can get back to me about this fitness thing. ???? I understand what people are saying about pedal transfers, but this race is still pretty damn fun and a hell of a challenge.

Pretty funny that Heather Irmiger - who did not win the race - is shown as 1st in pro women

Irmiger won in 2014, that when that interview was shot.
