I rechecked and the current setup has a 46t. Read up on my gear ratios and tried it with the 12t and not bad. Thanks for the info. 40t it is!

Also, the cranks that I already have in place for this bike is the standard 130bcd. Just in case this matters in my case.

This is my road/touring/commuting/CX/xc/light AM bike. You think 40t would be okay on the road? I am planning to go on a few bike trips with a rack and panniers this summer. I was thinking of going 1x with a 42t then have a smaller ring that I would manually drop the chain onto for the "oh sh*t" climbs. I def have been considering just the one 40t like you said and just spinning/coasting the flats. Thoughts? This road/cross stuff is quite new to me.

You know it! The crank set up is just temporary. I have to figure out what tooth ring to get.
