Dan Atherton Out For 2 Rounds - Injury

Jul 24, 2013 at 15:35
by Tyler Maine
Dan Atherton of GT Factory Racing will miss Rounds 4 and 5 of the inaugural Enduro World series in Colorado and Whistler to nurse a dislocated shoulder.

There s plenty of riders pushing the envelope on the enduro circuit but Dan Atherton remains one of the most exciting to watch. Second place in the last two stages is the proof he s just for show however. Here he takes the straight line over the boulders into... well other boulders.

Dan was riding in the notorious “Mountain of Hell “ race in Les Deux Alpes this weekend when his shoulder came out of joint as he dropped off an off-camber road. Despite intense pain Dan managed to put his shoulder back into joint and continue with the race to take third place but after consultation with Doug Jones from Harris & Ross, team coach Alan Milway and Red Bull Injury Management Specialist Darren Roberts, Dan has taken the difficult decision to sit out the next two rounds to focus on rehabilitation. Dan will have further scans this week to assist the specialists in mapping out his return to racing.

The way Dan Atherton attacks the stages you would assume the beautiful meadows of Deux Alpes make him very angry for some reason. A huge believer in the power of GoPro Dan reviews and relives his runs from the day until they ve thoroughly sunk in.

bigquotesIt's the second time in recent months that Dan's shoulder has dislocated and we've learnt from experience that it's better to treat these kinds of injuries before they escalate. - Dan Brown, Atherton Team Manager

GT Factory Racing will continue to represented in the next rounds of EWS by junior rider Martin Maes.

so much respect for those tough guys

HAHA, "The moutain of Hell" suited pretty well in this case! Smile Besides, I think we can say that pro mountain bikers are tough guys, cause popping his shoulder back during the race and manage to keep the pace is not what every athletes would do... Big Grin
Get well soon Dan!

Dislocate or separate your shoulder once, and it will never be 100% the same.

I clearly disagree, the shoulders are the first parts hurt during crashes, it not even called a "serious injury" for the pro riders! I mean they broke their collar bone once twice even third times during a career, as they dislocate their shoulder. They're simply not made like us, and have more abilities to recover an injury!! Smile

Bullshit. Shoulder dislocation is a quite serious injury. Moreover poping it back on one's own wasn't a good idea either. That can have immense impact on Dan's career. I dislocated my shoulder once and I will never forget that pain. I agree with touchmeslowly, once dislocated shoulder will be prone to recurrent dislocation and never be as strong again.

@renio you're right, but there is a differnce between us and the pros, their balls are twice as big as ours!
but in terms of recovery you are totally right

I dislocated my shoulder riding a dirtbike and I can confirm it never felt the same after. To this day I favor my left shoulder even though it happened in 2002!
  • 2 0
In our case, Amateur riders, i agree with you renio, The fact is that those athletes are different. How can you explain the recovery of Gracia for exemple, 8 months only after his horrible crash instead of nearly a year and a half for "normal" people, or worse due to the bleed? Or Zink, that run currently with a similar injury?? They are on a different level in terms of tolerance and health in general. @Rathunter83, man i can understand the pain for sure, and I'm not saying that this is not minor injury, but Dan is the kind of athlete who can pass through those rough times.

One explanation could be a good insurance that will cover the cost of physio. I think avarage riders or weekend wariors cannot affort neither good insurance nor physio as pros do, hence Redbull clinic. But they are also far more determined to recover than amateurs.
  • 2 0
Yeah for sure, I mean they have more support during their recovery, and their sponsors are here to keep it clear. But as you said, they are also mentally strong. I keep the instance of CG: he went to physio, training center,etc... every day, for 3 or 4 hours during his recovery. He had the time, and the money for, but also the determination.

I have to disagree with some people here, shoulder injuries suck bigtime. The only reason these guys bounce back is through sheer grit and determination. I think it's a fair assumption that they suffer badly with these type of injuries for months, maybe even years down the line. You are never the same after a bad shoulder injury.
  • 2 0
Youve gotta remember, this is the guy who majorly broke his back a couple of years ago. Shoulder injuries are pretty small in comparison. I'm not saying its not a bad injury, but Dan is tough as anything.
  • 1 1
I'll give you that; he's a friggin' soldier. But after a minor-ish AC separation my bench press has gone from 100kgx10 to a very painful 35kgx10 almost three months down the line. I have had thorough and sustained rehab too. Shoulders are shitty joints to fix for real.

shoulder dislocation is one thing, it hurts but if you pop in without grinding bones it's mostly swelling and pain... on the other hand, if you get stretched tendons/ligaments, you end up like him and it pops out when you push hard. The worst case is tearing like I did to my right shoulder but even after bad diagnostics, many dislocation, grinding of my bones, surgery and all, I would say that my recovery his at 95% so no reason for this guy to be affected for the rest of his career, especially with the support he as. The worst bitch about it all is probably the pain, the freaking pain.

My arms are loose like cooked chicken. If I am not careful they pop out on small crashes, slide outs or even when it is in the wrong position. I need 2 people to help me stick them back in though. Easy out, hard as fuc to go back in. And painful as.
I wish I had or would take the time to rehab properly although its really too late.
Dan is a tough as nails rider that's why I had to be a poser and buy a GT Enduro bike! Next time I crash in a race and pop my arm out, ill get 2 people to help put my arm back on and continue the race to a solid 33rd finish! Just like Dan! (Sort of) Gotta have heroes!

Now thats a proper athlete not like todays footballers

I couldn't agree more, what Dan did after that injury to get a podium is the polar opposite of a footballer diving around and trying to trick the referee into booking his opponent.

It'd be like dan hiding in the bushes and pushing all the other riders off track before reporting them to the marshalls. I know; sounds ridiculous doesn't it.

Is it just me, or when ever an Atherton is injured, he or she comes back better, stronger, faster...dislocates,and still manages a podium! Dan is a machine! Heal well my friend!

 Get better soon dan!

I know his pain. I dislocated mine 2 weeks ago, and it popped out again last weekend. It sucks. And I agree, he has to take the time to rehab it, or it will continue and only worsen over time. Best to Dan.

What a bada$$, get well soon. Rooting for you!
  • 2 0
My exact thoughts. I noticed how the article said nothing about him actually crashing either. Rode it out after landing hard, gets off, pops it back in place, podiums. Man is a BAMF.

It's a kind of curse that Dan suffers more of the three. Anyway, it's much better that no one have injuries

He is already starting to get in his game. He did well in the Megavalance. Smile Too bad he has to wait for the next season but what a badass! Big respect for him!

My shoulder popped out again 2 weeks ago for the second time, really not nice
  • 2 5
Haha fair play.... But lets not get carried away..... Try being ejected off a motorbike at 190mph on a Thursday, having an op to repair broken bones, then racing on the Sunday???? Its all in the head..... Would be nice if Joe normal got the same attention when they smashed themselves up.... No we get the NHS........
  • 1 0
Can't put a titanium plate in a dislocated shoulder. Fair play to Lorenzo, but it was stronger with the plate than before, it was mainly discomfort. Bet he's wondering if it was worth it now though.

Aww c'mon, don't knock the nhs bro. They've done a lot of people proud.

Sounds like you need to move to the US for their healthcare. you don't understand how lucky we are to have the NHS. Idiot
  • 1 0
The NHS is a grace, you fucking cockhead!!!

The last time I had surgery I was almost embarrased to have 8 to 10 trained individuals working on and around me. A truly humbling experience. Never mind America and private healthcare costs, in some countries you would be lucky to survive a trip to hospital without having your organs stolen.
