Video: Revolution One

"Revolution One" is a feature length documentary taking a look at the sport of off-road unicycling. The film combines current and historical footage from the last 30 years with interviews from pioneers of the sport.

I created this film out of my passion and involvment in the sport of unicycling and to celebrate and promote the amazing community of riders - Dan Heaton

A 10 minute short version of the film won 'Best Film on Cycling' at the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival (2009), 'Best Film' at the Sheffield Adventure Film Festival' (2010) and was featured on the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour (2009-2010).

This video is a history of the sport written by the people involved, in the manner of Stacey Peralta's iconic Dogtown and Z-Boys. And ironically, Peralta is actually interviewed in the film. As such it's way more interesting that your typical action sports film as it has all the action, but also a story and an intriguing one at that. One thing it does really well, and I say this as someone who doesn't ride a unicycle but has been around the off-road scene since the 80's, is that it captures the development of skills in the sport through three or four generations of trials, mountain and street/freestyle riders really well. I don't think there's anything of equivalent sophistication in mountain biking, and the histories of our sport that have been made have been pretty selective (or perhaps random) with whom they include. Dan Heaton's eye is superb too and the action is really well shot, and the narrative with media clips and interviews, is very well constructed.

So if you don't ride a unicycle but are at all interested in action sports filmmaking, watch this film.

This was soooo good! I agree with the Foiling - I'm sure there have been attempts made at MTB films like this and off the top of my head I can't think of a good one, it would be great. I know there's versions specific to styles of MTB, like shore, street, and kamikaze type stuff, perhaps a whole sport wide version would take more than just an hour - easily! It's humbling... I can't ride uni at all that I know of either haha.

Makes by balls hurt, looks sick though!

So after a few/many beers of encouragement and a jar a pickles I actually watched this in its entirety. I agree with The-Foiling-O very well done film precisely executed. Super difficult stuff. However, two thoughts came to my mind while watching this: 1. Showdown MacAskill vs. Unicycle. 2. I can help but think what if they had a freehub? I mean unicycles to me lack a little flow. Think of a hipster riding a fixie mountain bike down a W.C. course….

Look into the BC Wheel... it's not a flowy as you may think.

In response tothe foiling optimist, hell to the yes! I still maintain ghat muni isnt really as great as tw wheeled awesomeness, but just cuz the mention of the powel peralta, in reference by stacy peralta, some respect was gained from me. But muni and old school skating really dont correspond, skating is cooler. Not to hate on muni, its an interesting up coming sport, i just dont see rampage on unicycles happening. Haha

@ jmag : there is a pic here of a uni.. with a geared hub in it..also it could coast i think.. i cant find it 123 sorry to say.

Very cool to see this here. As the film awards might suggest, and with some perspective in the film from skateboard legend Stacy Peralta, this one ranks up there with the very best of the bike videos.

Haven't payed any attention to unicycles before I met some riding them on the trails I make. I had a talk to one "older" guy about the equipment and the level of progression the sport had come to. Handbrakes, geared unicycles and downhill competitions. Its awesome to hear and finally see about.

I think mountain unicycling is an awesome sport - lots of respect for those who can shred it on one wheel.
  • 11 5
it is a shame these awesome riders will never be able to have children due to the inevitable flat testicles that come with the sport

 NO... JUST STRAIGHT UP NO

I bought a unicycle last fall that was built in England years ago by Pashley for the Ugly Juggling Company. The man who sold it to me for $30 said it was his daughters and they brought it over when they moved to Canada. In the winter I rebuilt it with a new seat post, new bearings and new pedals also truing the wheel and putting a Kenda K-Rad BMX tire on it. Since then I've found out that it was one of the first unicycles built for off road. This video is amazing and shows so much talent but I can't see me trying any of those stunts. I'll be happy just going down the street and back for now.

Ermm did I really just sit and watch the whole film?? Wtf. Fair play to them I say!
  • 4 1
So much respect for them, bikes are sooo easy compared to unicycling. I have had a unicycle for 3 yours and still can not ride it on cement let alone on the mountain.

2:05 close up could have been left out though?

To be fair... I watched a good 15 minutes of this and I can't take any of these guys serious. Does this make me a horrible person?
  • 10 5
 My only question WHY
  • 8 7
Why ride your bike over jumps? Why ride a bike at all when you could drive? Why leave your house?
  • 9 3
I'm sure their only question was WHY NOT? Good on them for having the vision and drive to create something rather than just follow.

@ Cooper95 I totally get what you're saying. I see absolutely no appeal in the sport, there's no flow to it, I can't imagine getting pumped to ride a fun downhill on a unicycle... For me it's about on the same level as a pogo stick. That being said, I recognize that what I feel towards this sport is the same thing that the guy at work thought today when he looked over my shoulder and saw me spending $150 on "that thing that changes the gears" (A new Shimano XTR Shadow plus rear derailleur."

Yeah..to me it is a little like yoyos. Fun to try and requires a lot of skill(which im sure i dont have) to get good at but what is the point. You look kind of like a clown and you go nowhere quickly.

How about geared hubs? I can get 30km/h on my 27,5 Geared Muni on trails. I've even done MTB races on my Muni, I can tell that going past the experts in the techy section felt pretty awesome. I'm actually faster and more confident on my unicycle than I am on a bike.

All of Dan Heaton's videos are great. Makes me want to dust off my mountain and trials unis again...
  • 3 0
Each to their own I suppose but I just don't see the attraction. There just doesn't seem to be any flow to it.

Unicycling will never be cool. just like rollerblading. save it for the clowns.
  • 3 1
Riding my unicycle has improved my balance incredibly for my biking. And I doubt you could even make it five feet on a unicycle. The goal isn't for it to be "cool" it's just something challenging that is a lot of fun once you get used to it

 one word: RAD!

Kidding, this is pretty cool as well.
