With these oakleys and that new hover board that's coming out, I've decided to be Marty McFly from back to the future 2 for Halloween

When my boss said to me "I have over 200 pairs of oakleys" my instant reply was "ohhhhh you're one of those types...."

Hey, I know what we can do with all those old e-frame lenses over there...

Kool Moe Dee rocks Porsche Carrera 5620s, not Oakleys. Still the flyest shades ever.
  • 3 1
They look like somebody has broken the lens out of a goggle and strapped it around his head!
  • 2 1
Those are just as bad as the M frames all the MLB players were rockin in the 90's.
  • 7 3
I had a pair of Oakleys and they were insanely comfortable and light... and they looked fucking fast.
  • 6 1
I thin i need some nike air mags to go with those oakleys.
  • 5 1
There's a new hover board coming out? When? Where? Can I get auto lace Nike's and a blow dry jacket too?
  • 1 0
there is a kickstarter campaign for the hover board
  • 4 3
 I got oakley frogskin's. Am I a tool too?
  • 3 0
haha listen to all these haters. Good grief. Oakley has hit a pinkbike nerve!
  • 2 0
I'm gonna wear these with a Miami Vice Tshirt at Whistler & try to convince people that their hot tub sent them back in time
  • 1 0
@MoonDogg Wow, those 5620s go for $350 used.

@NIN20 Those glasses don't have enough side spread, they make a persons eyes look like they are close together.
  • 1 0
MoonDogg educating fools on Kool Moe Dee's shades! I love it- dropping knowledge!
  • 2 1
@NIN20 - now that is what you want! Pit Viper is where its at.

There are two things thats worse than wearing Oakleys - people who wear rapha and people who wear raphia with oakleys.

Oakley..... and don't forget the collectors pin!

Oakley shades: tools for tools since 1980

Now it all makes sense, I had mumbos back at school and wore them for cricket. One of my teachers said 'you look like a tool'. Now I know why. Thanks cuban.
  • 44 3
I can't tell who is pulling my leg more, Oakley for bringing back a 1980s design and charging 160 for it, or PB for posting it as something they think we will want to wear while riding. Either way i had a good laugh.
  • 14 0
Who needs top shelf shades, when you can squint?
  • 7 3
Ahh Oakley.. Some of the best designs I've ever seen. and by best I clearly mean worst..
  • 3 2
i dont think they cost that much even when they first came out
  • 47 0
I'm asian. I don't even need to squint.
  • 2 1
Are perhaps manufactured to wear them with a full face?

I would definitely not wear them with a half shell.
  • 3 0
good god, i didnt even seen the 160 price tag. oakley reminds me of 'beats'. yeah the quality might be there, but its far over priced for said commodity.
  • 7 0
I'm not sure who spotted the gap in the market between glasses and goggles, or if there even was one but those Oakleys definitely filled that niche... Personally though, I'll stick with the goggles. They're cheaper and I don't look like quite as much of a douche-canoe in them...
  • 2 0
Ha ha, I had to Google 'douche-canoe'! You kids.
  • 4 0
A thing between Glasses and Goggles.. shall we call them "Gaggles"?
  • 2 0
Well they certainly make me gag
  • 1 3
@gclarida You are pulling your own leg. All PB is trying to do is show some newer items that are under $200. If you don't like what PB has posted to show you, than don't buy in. Pretty simple really.

I'm also pretty sure that the writers, editors and publishers of PB don't care what you buy or wear, they simply have a job to do of informing riders of available content, events and whatever else.
  • 2 0
i hope PB keeps doing these purely for the superb heckling the products seem to provoke.
  • 4 0
@XCMark Lol dude, lighten up, it was a joke. I actually love that pink bike it putting up a under $200 post, thats sweet, but when you put something like douche goggles in there, i can only go so far without commenting. Maybe you should grab yourself a pair, they would probably suit you.
  • 43 4
The problem with the whole thing is that "Under $200" covers a lot of stuff. You could replace that stem with just about any other stem, or that lube with any other lube on the market...what it makes it so special?

I don't know, maybe I'm thinking too much. I'm gonna go buy some sweet Oakleys and hide in the closet.
  • 53 0
 Say hi to R Kelly
  • 14 2
You are correct, you'll start to see more and more items under the $200 marker as there are lots of similarities and we are putting this together just as a "Check Out". Don't read into it too much, it's just cool products and there are more coming each month.
  • 5 0
I really dig it. Its cool to see lower cost items that may work for many people.
  • 6 1
Yeaaah!! you'r just complaining too much now! Before, people were shouting, you always review full carbon 9k full enve bikes blah blah blah, and now you complain that 200$ covers too much.. GET IT TOGETHER FOR CHIRST SAKE!
  • 4 0
I think he just means that if they're going to focus on the items price and act as if under 200 is a good price for these items that the things featured should be ones in which not too many people would instinctively think to be under 200 dollars. Whereas you bringing up reviews the price is the last thing they care about. quite the opposite of this actually.
  • 1 0
The wet chain lube and fork oil are two things I've been looking for. I want non-toxic and the price is ok-ish. Bought.
  • 3 0
I'm fairly certain $107 is cheap for a stem... said no-one ever.
  • 1 0
@brule I didn't know about the Whistler lube before this post. Now I'm going to buy some.
  • 1 0
@XCMark - glad to hear it man.

We'll keep making these check outs as we keep getting in product that we feel you should have a look at.
  • 15 0
Oakley eyeshades...99 cents at your local thrift shop!
  • 10 0
Chainlube for under 200 bucks?!? awesome!
  • 2 0
yeah i had no idea until this article came out. who would have thought?
  • 5 0
Those Oakleys look slightly less stupid than wearing goggles with an XC lid though. Slightly. I did have a black iridium set BITD. Unless you were 3 miles from the sun, you could see feck all.
  • 9 2
Is anyone actually going to buy any of this stuff?
  • 1 0
i applaud PB for 'trying'. but i find myself saying the same thing every time they post things like this. sometimes they have okay stuff in their online deals posts, but most of the time you gotta hunt for what you're after.
  • 6 1
The headlight looks like it might be a good deal
  • 3 0
It is. It's comparable to my light and motion urban 700. Just an hour shorter battery life and about 100 bucks less.
  • 3 0
You guys read way too far into this. It's just a collection of items. Nowhere does it say that Pinkbike recommends these items, the remarks under each are from the manufacturer. You don't have to like all or any of these products. That's the beauty of it. And yes, timsim07, people will actually buy this stuff.
  • 2 1
Just ordered the lube. So yes!
  • 3 0
Thinking about getting into night riding. Would the Bontrager light be good as a handlebar light combined with an ultra powerful light attached to the helmet? Or would you want something better for the handlbare?
  • 3 0
I do a fair bit of nightriding, and if you can only have 1 light, I personally prefer mounting it on the bar. While it doesn't give you the ability to look around corners as well, a light on the bar gives the trail much more definition, which for someone getting into night riding, I feel is more important. Get something that's at least 1000 lumens; I've had good experiences with Serfas stuff and they have pretty good price points on it all. If you decide you like night riding, get a smaller, lighter weight light for the head, like the Bontrager model listed (Which is essentially a copy of the Light and Motion Urban series). I'd skip on niterider. yes they make good stuff, but they're no longer the class leader they used to be and not worth the premium price. Also don't get the $30 ebay magicshine knockoffs. The actual magicshine ones are decent (expect about 75-80% of the stated lumens and the batteries aren't fantastic), and a good way to find out if you like night riding without dropping a ton of coin. The knockoff magicshines are...Well just don't bother.
  • 1 0
^ Exactly. Many people put the brightest light on their helmet and it outshines the bar light and 'flattens out' the trail because there are no shadows cast (relative to the viewer).

I've seen a good rider go OTB while JRA because of this - trail looked flat, but the trail wasn't flat at all.
  • 1 0
Buy two CREE 1200 lights from Amazon, they will set you back $20 USD a piece shipped and offer a ton of light. Just keep an eye on them when they charge.

If you ride at night above the speed of smell you will want a bar and helmet light.

When your light set up is $20 shipped with all the gear you won't be pissed if you damage or lose it. Batteries dies? Buy a whole new unit.
  • 3 0
A 1,000 lumens? holy crap, you don't need anything near that. if you're looking for affordable head lamps, you don't need to go over 500 lumens. That's plenty of light unless you want every aspect of a 5ft. wide trail, 200ft. away lit up. Sure its nice to have more light but at some point, its just overkill and unnecessary unless your vision really goes to shit at night for whatever reason.
  • 2 0
Scott Townes is right. I used to ride Seymour (Ned's) at night with a 100-lumen on my head and 4-5 of those cheap 5$ commuter lights from MEC strapped to my bike. Sure, I didn't ride as fast as daytime, but that was kinda the fun of it.
  • 1 0
My bar mounted light is a dual emitter with 20 and 60 degrees lenses 2x300lm (true lumen, not chinese ones)
20 degree lens is for long throw
60 degree lens for short throw (angled down to light from front tire up to 5m).
Way much better than standard chinese 1000lm that have a narrow beam.
  • 2 0
Kewl. All I know is for $35USD I have helmet and bar light, they are not narrow, and it looks like a monster truck is coming down the trail.......oh, and they have stood the test of time, I am just careful when charging.

Maybe I will buy some of those sick Oakley shades for my halloween costume with the dinero I saved.
  • 2 1
@fattirefury12 If you are going to recommend cheap CREE lights, let people know of the modding that will have to be done to get the light to last more than four rides.

I bought the CREE SSx2, and it had no thermal paste on the emitters. Had I not caught this it would have fried my light. So I put some thermal paste on the emitters, now it cools as the light should. Also; the cheap Chinese battery packs that come with these cheap lights can be dangerous. My battery was labeled as 2S2P, but for some reason it was not getting the mAh that the battery configuration should output. SO I opened up the battery to find the configuration was not a configuration at all, but some assemblers mistake. So I broke the battery apart and am going to re-wire it as 2S2P, like it was sold as.

Though, for 2000lm at $25 and about $15 in mods and another $40 to $140 in high-end battery packs and you still have a light that will outshine and outrun a NiteRider, and be cheaper than the NiteRider.
  • 1 0
Hmmm.....I have had my batch for some time without issue. Guess I got lucky, score. Never said it wasn't a risk at $35USD for two lights with all needed gear shipped from China. Sure wasn't expecting the quality they provided, I will continue to buy a set every 18 months or so rather than spend big $ on a set that will be obsolete in a few years, plus if I lose them/damage them, it is only $17USD to replace each light.

Not an option for everyone, but for many they work just fine.

And yes, the batteries scare me as I previously mentioned.
  • 1 0
I bought some used lights last year and have yet to go on a ride (though the plan is to get one in soon!), I think one is 1000 lumens and the other 500. From what @iamamodel said I should put the 500 on my helmet which is the opposite of what I've read in MBA and MTBR. Anyone else do brighter on the bar?
  • 1 0
I only do helmet. For me it doesn't make sense to have one on the handlebars if you had to choose between the two. Your head and where you're looking is where you're going to go. It doesn't help to have the light source on the handle bars which will only turn in the direction your head tells it to, and only at one angle. If you have to pick one for the brighter light to go on, do the helmet. Basic abilities will be able to overcome any possible issues a light being 3 ft. higher will pose... which aint much... or anything at all now that I think about it. Lower the light, the longer the shadows and the worse perspective you get of what's in front of you, again all talking about having one light source, not many.
  • 1 0
Scott, I have an extremely bright light on my bars with infinite brightness adjustment. I get people to stand beside me while I change the brightness of the bar light so that it goes from underpowered by the helmet light to overpowered by the helmet light. The trail transforms from 2D to 3D and the difference is astounding. I show this when out on rides with people who think it is better to have the brighter light on their helmet and most of them switch. I'm not trying to have an internet pissing match but please, if you haven't done this exact experiment you should. Quality of light is far more important than brightness.
  • 1 0
^ I'm into night riding because of my parents and they do exactly that so I've ridden with that setup before but I didn't find it a big enough difference to justify dropping another x amount of bucks on it. I don't know if its the same for everyone else but I ride just fine with the helmet light and haven't run into any issues with depth perception even on techier trails.
  • 4 0
Gonna buy some of that dry shower and see how long I can go without a real shower before my friends disown me.
  • 3 0
my last girlfriend used to use that shit every now and then. I wonder if whoever she's with now thought it was as weird as i did. How can you have a shower with no water? blasphemy!
  • 1 0
The oakley eyeshades were released in the mid 80's. They are not a new design. All you guys bashing the design have to remember that these are re-releases for a 30 year anniversary. Whether you like them or not is your own opinion, but criticizing 30 year old technology just makes you look like a fool...
  • 3 0
Finally my riding won't be limited by the weight of the top cap!! Big Grin Like the idea though
  • 1 0
@Whistler Lube -- even if you did want to buy some (online) good luck finding it and their site is crap for listing where to actually buy the stuff. Oh wait, I have the option to place an international call to Canada.
  • 5 0
It's a brand new company in the last year, they don't have a distributor in the US yet. It is just starting to get out there in Canada. PS. the product works killer good, if you can find it, grab a bottle.
  • 1 3
Could you please stop now with the "everything is awesomer in Canada!" I mean, you already have Whistler Bike Park. Do you need more?

I emailed them to find out where I can buy some. I just expected too much from Pinkbike raving on the product and there is no e-commerce anywhere to be found for it.
  • 8 0
@meesterover thank you for the e-mail. It's true we are less than a year old at this point and do not yet have an online retailer. Please be patient and I'm sure that soon enough there will be WPL products available to Americans. Any and all constructive criticism is welcome via e-mail info@whisperformlube.com.
  • 6 0
to be fair if whispeformlube pops up in my address book the mrs is gonna ask questions
  • 1 0
@whisperformlube I live in Oregon and would like to get a bottle down here before it's available in the states. I'm friends with lots of people over at Universal Cycles of Oregon and would love for them to see this lube, because the wet-whether Finish-line product is not that great. I've shown them new products in the past and they started stocking them on my recommendation. I want to test both lubes at Mt. Hood with a couple of riders from UC that buy products for the shop, doing this may start your US distribution path.

PM me with info on how I can send you money for a bottle of both!
  • 1 0
I can vouch for Whistler Performance Lube Chain and Fork Boost being excellent products.. picked up some samples at Crankworx and have been blown away with how effective each product is.
  • 2 1
Don't care about the chain lube but the fork boost sounds interesting. I think @pinkbike.com should do a tech review on it.
  • 2 0
Honestly the Chain lube is even more impressive. A quick rinse and your drivetrain looks new again. Didn't believe it until I tried it.
  • 1 1
@cdel the chainlube: synthetic or petroleum based?
  • 2 1
Completely green technology made from renewable resources. No petroleum or synthetics, it is safe for the environment and you.
  • 1 1
That doesn't answer my question. If it's not petroleum or synthetic based, then what's the base? Parrafin? I want to know how it preforms compared with modern synthetic lubes.
  • 2 1
They absolutely answered your question: synthetic or petroleum based? They said neither, don't get mad they won't give away the secret to the everlasting gobstopper.
  • 1 1
That not how lubricant formulation works, there's only a few bases used for lubricants. (In the case of chain lubes, it's almost universally petroleum, paraffin, or a synthetic.) Asking what they're using for a lubricant base isn't asking for the keys to the kingdom, it's asking what's on the ingredient list on the back of the bottle. which is why i asked somebody who would have a bottle of it in the first place: he could look at the list.

If they've got some completely new substance for the base, instead of one of the 3 normal ones, they would be making a much bigger deal about it, because it would be a REALLY big deal: bike chain lubes have all been one of those 3 for about 15 years.
  • 3 0
Hey Groghunter. You are correct; there have traditionally been three lubrication bases, but no more. This is a completely new base. We thought we'd beat the large multinationals to it. The unique mixture of oils interacts directly with the metal surface (by design), prevents redox reactions from taking place while it forms a true thin film of high elasticity on the surface of the chain. High surface tension to minimize dust impingement, and a self-emulsifying property to wash off upon prolonged contact with water (tuned specifically). Film is also mechanically removable with a cloth - you are pulling a cohesive film off rather than a liquid. You will not hear your chain any longer - it is that good. Moreover, put on your skin; it will make it nice and soft. The girls will love your soft hands. Intrigued?
  • 1 0
A little bit, but best of all, informed. thanks.
  • 2 0
Thanks! You answer like a scientist, which is great. You'd like our suspension oils - lots of work went into those. We focused not only on viscosity by seal compatibility (our products platicize rubber and other elastometers and prevent drying and cracking). Focused on lubrication a lot, heat dissipation and prevention of cavitation (to prevent air emulsion formation). It has worked very well. Unfortunately we can only go down to about 32 cSt viscosity (but up to whatever you want), so we do not have, for the moment, anything below a 10wt oil. We have great 10wt and 20wt oils, though.....We just developed last week a 1wt oil (yes, not a typo, 2.5 cSt at 40degC), but we have to test stability and gauge price. If that works, then we can blend with our existing ones and get really low viscosity. We'll just have to see. Hopefully we will report some of the results during next riding season. cheers.
  • 2 0
Dry shower... Huummm "why are we not funding this"....
  • 3 0
I read it, laughed, and then decided I needed some.
  • 2 0
Yeah man those guys are on to something there.. Way better then a a stinky moist shirt or towel...
  • 2 0
I'll keep a can by the bed.
  • 2 1
Seriously Oakley wants $160 bucks for those? Even if I got those for FREE I wouldn't wear 'em...
  • 2 1
Anyone have any experience with that fork boost? Been thinking about getting something like that...
  • 1 0
Basically a fork seal lubricant, exterior and interior (Fox Float Fluid). Helps seal remain soft and pulls dirt out from in-between seal and stanchion. Dirt that does not come out with the water (should not be spraying in there anyways....). I use it after every ride and lots of dirt comes out every time. Interesting to see which fork seals are better than others as well......You only need a little bit every time; lasts for a long time.
  • 1 0
Whats with all the hate for oakley?? I love oakley gear. I do own a mountain bike that gets dirty tho, so is that ok?
  • 1 0
how come there's no review on any of the items? just a quote "from the manufacturer"
  • 1 0
Paid adds, its how Pinkbike stays alive.
  • 2 2
those Oakley what ever they are look like shit
  • 5 7
An article saying good items under $200 almost like its affordable, try "Items under $40"
  • 5 1
Mountain bike gear under $40? Valve Caps?

Would make for a pretty boring article.
  • 1 2
You do realize what sport you chose? Nothing about mtb is affordable, what are you expecting to buy for under 40 dollars?
  • 1 0
 @mmakuch Walmart bike?
  • 1 0
I'm not sure I want to read an article on $40 items. Chain lube, inner tubes, replacement Camelback bite valves... Yay!
