New Unofficial World Record Set at Mount 7

MT7

Reg Mullet and Mark Haimes (aka Kram) celebrating the end of their 27th lap in just under 24 hours on Mount 7. It rained heavily on them during their night laps, making it a true test of rider and bikes.

While a UCI representative was on hand for the full 24 hours of riding, they now have to review video footage to make sure that everything was up to spec for this World Record ride and to give an official distance covered (Vertical Descent on an MTB in 24 hours). Once all the boxes have been checked we'll be able to turn this "unofficial" into an Official World Record. (each lap is approx +/- 4000 vert feet, so you're looking at over 100000 vert of descending in 24 hours on one of the most rugged DH trails around)

The duo would like to send out huge thanks to their sponsors: Calgary Cycle, DVO Suspension, Light & Motion, NRG, Race Face, Santa Cruz Bicycles, Spruce Race Timing and Troy Lee Designs.

Stay tuned for full recap and video soon.

MT7

You have to have a great support crew to pull off a ride like this.

No matter the outcome of Guinness's review; congratulations to you two and your support crew. Staggering to do that many Mt 7 laps.

Next up; how many brake pads did you both go through?
  • 5 0
I'll guess two pad changes (so finishing on the 3rd set)...but I could be way off...haha

So did they stop at 19hrs 27min then???
  • 7 2
That 19:27 is minutes and seconds for the time it took them on their last lap down from the top as we understand it.

We both started with new saint ice tech rotors and pads and we made it through without a change necessary, although they are definitely cooked now. Incredibly we both rode the same bike for all 27 laps with only needing chain lube despite the insanely muddy clay conditions all night (but rewarded with hero dirt on the bottom half for the following afternoon). Hats off to Santa Cruz's V10 and my DVO Emerald. Needs a hose down and a pad change and that's about it.

The 19:27 is the time of day. We started at 8pm Friday to get the night session over with first and had til 8pm Saturday.

Every time a rider makes a new world record with a mountain bike it sheds more light on the sport. Cam McCaul is in a car commercial, Zink was on ESPN for his backflip and now this insane duo! Keep pushing the sport guys and congrats on this!

Looks like we bought the right SUV then. Better half's got the 2014 model, haha!

We are feeling surprisingly good and in fact are planning a ride on Terminator Ridge off Kicking Horse if the weather holds out. The stoke is strong Smile

No I think we mean how they looked right after....

Kramster you guys are awesome I wish I could do something like this someday!

So happy to see this done onboard a set of cranks made 10 feet from my door in Burnaby, BC.
  • 2 0
Wolf.. That was the bike right after. Our mechanic had no repairs to make so he kept busy by wiping the mud off every lap. Here's what it looked like mid lap...

Lol!!! That's more like it... When I look at a record winning bike THAT there is what it should look like! Most cool . Thanks

It was incredible just to witness this amazing feat.. The conditions these guys rode through was nothing short of my vision of hell, and they didn't let it slow them down one bit. I don't believe that I saw them take more than a few minutes between runs, and much of that was just for the lap photos required by Guinness. The organization and support of the event was unbelievable! From the support riders (especially those that braved the cold wet night laps!), to the food, hydration and smoothie prep, to the lights and camera swaps and charging, the mechanical support (Or chain lube technicians..? Considering both bikes required basically no attention the whole time..), the support and witnesses at the top and bottom keeping everything on track the entire time, all of the shuttle drivers getting them back up for the next run, the supporters cheering the boys on through it all. Simply amazing! Congratulations to all those involved, and of course, a huge congratulations to Reg and Mark!

Thanks mate, your shuttle truck was a beast and you drive like a champ. You cut many minutes off our uplift time, making our job easier on the way back down. Big cheers to you and your badass truck, and really sorry it's now full of mud. I just finished doing a crap job of cleaning mine, so I know what you're in for Wink

It's even more impressive to do this on the Mt 7 Psychosis trail, which is burly enough to make most riders shrivel. Lots of people couldn't ride it in the daylight, and these two maniacs charged all night with lights on their bikes. Add to that, the freezing rain they endured, and this feat is even greater. Way to go Krullet!

Well done sirs! It was great to be apart of your legendary achievement on an iconic mountain. You two were beasts. The bar has been set at a level that will be next to impossible to beat. From pouring rain night laps on MT7 to 27 people in the final train! Excellent job by all that we're evolved especially your ladies! We salute you!

Way to go guys!! That's badass.
  • 2 0
Thanks mate! C'mon up to Squamish and let's go for a rip!

I saw these guys gearing up in the parking lot as I headed out for a chill XC lap in the sprinkling rain. I missed the psychosis days, but cool to see some life back in that parking lot that has seen many great feats. And a new one to add. Congrats.
  • 3 1
Yeah...it'd be nice to know exactly what they did...like average speed over this distance or elevation for this time. The devil is in the details.
  • 5 1
All in due time. Let em get some hard earned rest first Wink
  • 3 0
My hands start hurtin' after only a couple thousand vertical feet. 100,000?????? Damn!
  • 3 0
I'd have to ride in oven mitts for my hands to be able to handle 100000 feet of descending
  • 3 0
Its been my dream to attempt something like this..............congrats. Well deserved.
  • 2 0
Killed it! Great work Reg and Kram!
  • 1 0
Well there I go, a little patience and my question answered itself. Lesson learned.
  • 2 0
19:27 was the actual time and they had till 20:00 to finish.Congrats guys
  • 1 0
Hats off to both riders, absolute killer job. The track is hard enough, but with night laps in the rain, HUGE props!
  • 1 0
Incredible is all I can say. That is a load of runs on a ridiculously challenging hill!
  • 2 0
 how much vertical is that?
  • 6 0
Each lap was 4200 vert ft X 27 laps = 113,400 feet or nearly 4 times down Mt Everest (29,035 ft)
  • 5 0
The reason we aren't claiming an exact number yet is because we don't know if Guinness will accept additional vertical that is gained on the hike a bike section which accumulates over 2000 feet. We have had the course professionally surveyed and we are hoping the uphills will count for more. But we covered our bases by riding enough laps to crack 100,000 even if it's not accepted. I don't know the exact numbers as the survey data was crunched after we started and we got word mid ride we needed extra laps to reach our goal, but I do know it's less than 4200 feet.

Hope you didn't cross any tape, UCI will have you dq'd for that!
  • 1 0
thanks for the math, very impressive
  • 3 0
@ctd07 - as long as they re-enter where they went off course, they're ok! Wink
  • 3 1
 Oooo reg,, where's lap 28
  • 1 0
Waited until Sunday for that one. Still think about you every time I ride that root drop. Thanks for taking out that tree!
  • 1 0
Thanx buddy! The back, has never been, the same but I am,glad I could help out in any way I canWink .. Was it all race course or did ya mix up the trails a bit
  • 1 0
One of the stipulations of Guinness was that it has to be on the same trail every lap. So we picked the race course.
  • 1 0
Absolutely fantastic! Are you bored with Mount 7 now? Haha.. Such a great trail!
  • 3 0
Not possible. It was like a new trail every lap with the conditions changing so much. Cheers!
  • 1 0
beeeerrs! I mean cheers and congrats!

Thanks! I was very concerned last week but it kept getting better every day and by Friday Am it had improved a bunch and somehow held for the full 24. A miracle really. So much support for the whole event it was mega fun for the full 24hrs and the training payed off. Hope you enjoyed the rest of the week in Fernie.

 shuttle vehicle?

hats off boys... well done!
  • 5 0
There was a mix of shuttle trucks over the 24 hours. Baja'd Chevy, Turbo Diesel Ram, Ford Raptor, and a lifted Tacoma from what I remember. Shuttles were FAST to say the least.
  • 1 0
 That, its impressive... Congrats.

 Reg Mullet is the man.
