Aaron Amazes With Mechanical at DVO Reaper Madness

With an elevation gain in the 800 ft range on a course right around three miles long, a lot can happen. Bootleg is some of the burliest terrain I've had the uh... pleasure of covering. It really is one of those places where photos are worth a thousand words. Telling the story of the finals for the Nevada State Championships is going to be difficult. Friday gusts caused havoc for riders both on and off the course. Saturday had some great racing action and Sunday finished with a battle that had Gwin amazing the crowd with a mechanical that many would figure counted him out for a podium spot, but you can never count him out. I checked in to the host hotel on Thursday around 6pm and things were starting off well, with riders literally doing wheelies to their room.

Kore North Cat 3 Racer Brody Poppin Wheelies in the Host Hotel Lobby. Needles to say the fine folks at the Hover Dam Lodge are bike friendly. Brody would filet his arm the Saturday requiring 24 stitches we have photos that are way to gnarly to publish and then would race on Sunday anyway and finished in 2nd place in what was his 1st race ever at Bootleg.

A flat, a wrapped tire, a crash, and he still wins by 7-seconds over a pretty solid pro field... gives you some idea of how much faster these WC guys are than the rest of us. Amazing.
  • 47 2
If Gwin ever has a crash and manages to scratch his face up, we would probably see this:

Those TRP brakes are useless. Only a flat and a crash could slow Gwin down.

For those of you that are stoked on the article - Thank you! I would like to say a couple of things. I finished this article around 12am Sunday night and was essentially a zombie. I published it at that point but forgot to push it to the editors for review and home page posting, which is why it was posted late. Not Pinkbike's fault, totally my bad. Additionally I left out some key factors of the race, namely the fact that it was the DVO Reaper Madness Final Round. My sincerest apologies to Bryson and DVO for that. Additionally I left out some race photos of the Hand Bike Racing action and lastly, I did not include the overall standings and overall podiums. Please understand that I try to be as thorough as possible on these articles and I do make every effort to be as well rounded as possible. It has been pointed out to me that sometimes I get carried away with sharing my opinion in the reports rather than just telling the story of the race and racers, which I am going to work on. Hopefully the rad photos make up for the lack of journalistic prowess. With the Fontana and Bootleg races in the books, I am not sure when or where I will report for Pinkbike next, but I am honored that they had me represent them in the best way I know how and I hope the relationship continues throughout the rest of the season - Keep it Pinned Pinkbikers - Scott McClain

I was actually on the shuttle truck a few times with Aaron Gwin. Nice guy, as was everyone else there. I asked him about his YT, and I think, partly, he's trying to race it "bone stock." Apparently, his Demo was super modified and such.

I've ridden Bootleg a bunch, but the course they had taped off for the race was intense. So much more than any of the pictures even show. How the pros can get through it so quickly is amazing to me, as I was like 9 minutes or more (I wasn't racing, just riding).

Lots of injuries over the weekend. Literally, there was an ambulance on standby. I heard about a broken arm, torn out shoulders, and plenty of blood.

Would have liked to have seen some POV footage from Aaron's run, though. Didn't know he blew his tire and still won. That guy continues to make the rest of us look like bitches.

How do you know nobody broke their arm? Were you keeping a log of all the injuries over the weekend?

The last picture sums up the boot leg experience, a pallet fire road gap! I remember when Gwin was racing the mountain states cup in Snowmass with Yeti, He ate total s*** on a wood bridge within sight of the finish line. We all then looked at the clock and realized he was still up by 20+ seconds and started yelling at him to get his bike and cross the line. He eventually got up and pushed his bike through and still took the win. If you have raced Snowmass you know the bridge I am talking about.
  • 3 0
I broke two teeth in half wedging my front tire between two rocks near the waterfall section during MSC Snowmass practice. Full face helmet, handle bars still managed to find a way to my mouth. Fun race though. I remember that year, too. I couldn't believe how fast we was taking the last sections before he ate it. Really is next level.

I'm intrigued by Bootleg being a WC course. I've ridden the race course a few times (I suck btw) and I found it easier than another race course I've ridden (Canadian DH at Whistler), which is not even a WC course. Maybe it would be more challenging if they incorporate Ginger (which I've never ridden, only saw on video)?
  • 5 0
A Vegas WC stop would be awesome. I wonder if the Vegas Visitor's Convention has enough motivation to bribe UCI, er I mean "sponsor", the event.

Great course and super easy for both locals and International racers to get to, no shortage of hotel rooms near by, and there's a good chance of getting townhoused with Peaty and Ratboy on the strip after the race.
  • 2 0
Its not unprecedented. Cyclocross organizers managed to get CrossVegas on the UCI World Cup calendar due to its proximity in timing to Interbike. Its become a way for the euro pros to come and get appearance fees and some UCI points in the early season before the real work begins. The course is legitimately hard enough to be a WC and the euros are blown away by the fan enthusiasm.
  • 1 0
Probably to hot during WC season. But it would be rad!
  • 1 0
its important to note that there have consistently been over 10 thousand fans at the cross vegas event.... its definitely possible.
  • 2 0
@scott-townes where are you getting the number 10,000??? I've been to the last three Cross Vegas races and feel pretty confident that not only was there way less than 10,000, that many people wouldn't even fit in the park they hold the race at.
  • 1 0
You can google it very easily. Numbers go up as much as 12,000. Now how did they end up at that number? I'm unsure. It could include participants and vendors, its most likely the total number from start to end of the event instead at any one time, etc. etc.
  • 2 0
microfiz- Ginger is good fun to ride, there have been dh races on that trail, before don't know the year. There aren't many video's other then pov that i've found so far that do it proper. Some People in the riding community talk ginger up to be all gnar crazy, but it's like any other trail. I've ridden it on my FR HT many times, night rides ect, it's proper, the local trail crew has done some tremendous work recently re-doing the water fall at the end of love canal. Please tell your friends to come and ride Ginger! If you have a trail bike, dh bike, or proper dh hard tail, show up! Hard trails deserve hard riders, bring your A game. Rider up!

I would have thought by now runflat tires from autos would have trickled down to mtb. Michelin has the best patent for the ultimate automotive run-flat (IMO). Why doesn't the patented design trickle down to the MTB scene?...or is it just slow to? Procore isn't the solution; sorry.
  • 4 0
Lots of reasons. Weight is an obvious one; stiffer sidewalls and/or a rigid internal ring add quite a bit. Two, those stiffer sidewalls allow for less tuning of ride/grip for a given tire. It's pretty well known that Gwin manages his tire pressure down to the 1/2psi at WC races, for example. Three, all the extra weight is unsprung weight, which is the worst kind for suspension performance. Four, Michelin's system allows the vehicle to limp home, or to the nearest point of repair. When deflated, its performance isn't even close to an inflated tire. Although you CAN drive it at 50mph for 50 miles, you wouldn't want to do so on a twisty mountain road, for example. Five, the rigid inner wheel gives a VERY rough ride off road. Michelin's design works fine for fairly smooth paved surfaces, but it's a different ball game for MTB.

Though I'm no Procore cheerleader, it looks like the best thing we've got for the near future.

I run RFT on one of our vehicles and hate them. Due for replacement this spring and I won't be putting on RFT, despite the risk of not having an onboard spare. The ride is terrible, too stiff.
