Evoc - Eurobike 2012

Protector backpacks, body armour and travel luggage all feature Evoc's eye to detail. Itegrating what they see as the ultimate in features as requested by numerous athletes under their support umbrella they say their gear is designed for riders, by riders. Here we take a look at some of what they had on desplay at Europe's largest bike show including their new 35 litre photographer pack.

photo
Adventure packs doing exactly what they say they do on the tin, or sign. Evoc are proud of the journey which led them to create their lines of gear for both the bike and snow world, a theme which would appear to filter through all that they do.

There were several backpacks on display from the Protector line, ranging from the 10 litre capacity FR Lite up to the cavernous 30 litre FR tour. With more and more riders exploring big terrain in remote areas those looking for some back protection while carrying a pack are increasing in number. Using what Evoc call 'Liteshield Back Protector Techlology', this a replaceable panel formed from an EPS core surrounded by polyurethane foam to create compressible segments. These absorb the bigger impacts while softer layers sit close to the body and allow it to mould comfortably to your back. The full protector line is fully certified by the German TUV stamp. It's worth noting that the replaceable panel can be worn as a separate back protector in its own right. What we really liked to see was the introduction of the 20 litre Trail Women which has redesigned straps and layout to fit more comfortably with the female body, and is available in two sizes, small and long.

photo
On the left is the 10 Litre CC Team with the 3 litre CC on the right. Team refers to the rainbow stripes inspired colour scheme and the range includes packs from the 3 litre pack shown all the way up to 16 litres with drinks bladder sizes ranging from 2 litres to 3 litres.

The Bike Travel Bag is anything but a cheap bike box, and if you're the sort of rider who doesn't travel often, or is happy to throw your bike in an old cardboard box from your local store, then this one probably isn't for you. If you take your ride seriously though, or travel with it a lot, then nothing beats the security of a proper bag. The Evoc is a popular sight at World Cup races in the hands of both privateers and pros and for good reason, they're tough and thanks to the widely spaced wheels, easy to lug through airports week in, week out.

photo
Photography and biking go hand in hand. The outdoors lifestyle, amazing landscapes to be expored and skilful riding on display. It all needs documented. Frequently this takes photographers to places miles away from civilisation and this means that they themselves need to ride there too. The first item from Evoc is this 12 litre Camera Block, an insert designed to fit into larger sports packs of 20 litres and above and provide protection to expensive SLR bodies and a selection of lenses. It's shown here next to the Protector Series FR Team.

photo
photo
Next up is a true photographers bag, the Camera Pack, a 35 litre cavern for all your gear. We spotted several features which instantly drew our eye, starting with the zip opening at the rear rather than the front. This means you open it with the front in the dirt rather than the straps and back which keeps your shirt cleaner for longer. Chunky zips with easy grab toggles, lots of pockets for small items and straps for tying gear down on the outside all add up to a pack that looks to offer a solid alternative to Lowe Pro.

With an increasing number of riders eschewing elbow pads and bulky armour there's now a waistcoat/vest style of jacket in nearly every armour manufacturers line-up. Evoc build their four options around the same basic layout, offering a simple back protector and kidney belt vest, the Protector Vest, and the Protector Vest Air+ which includes low profile shoulder and flank protection. As with select packs in the Evoc range, these are available in both male and female specific designs. The back protection panel features the same technology of that in the Protector packs and incorporates a removeable coccyx pad. Additional protection on the Air+ in critical areas comes from the inclusion of silicone based padding which Evoc call Deflexion Technology. It's low profile, soft and malleable down to -20c, and breathable. The shoulder The images show the Womens specific Protector Vest Air+ in white and the blue mens Protector Vest in blue.

photo
We all do it, we get back from a ride and throw that expensive lid in the back of the car on top of the junk and drive home. These two helmet bags offer protection from travel damage for both open face and downhill helmets. Mesh panels allow sweat to dry off while the open face helmet bag also includes a sunglasses pocket. A waterproof base allows you to put it on the ground without it turning into a giant sponge and colourways are this Multicolour style or plain black.

photo
Shown on the left is the terminal bag with detachable backpack for carrying when you want to take just some of it with you. Without the additional zip-on pack the wheeled main bag fits the carry on luggage dimensions for air travel and comes in several colours. On the right is an opened World Traveller pack, a 125 litre multi compartment bag which has recently been reworked to fit in with new air travel regulations and should have no problem in swallowing up all your gear for any trip.

WHERE is Evoc actually MADE, not "engineered", "designed", etc...
  • 8 0
Reminds me a bit of POC, designed in sweden, made in china. I don't know about Evoc though. Such a good looking camera bag/block, if I hadn't just got a LowePro pack, that would be my first choice.
  • 19 1
I would guess China, that's where everything is made nowadays.
  • 21 11
 Who cares?
  • 11 3
Or Raceface. I wanted a good Canadian brand to go with my Canadian made Rocky Mountain but then I get the box for my new bars and stem and it says something like "Designed in Canada, Made in Taiwan."
  • 18 6
It's comical to me how many people here kind of "blame" China for poor quality. Instead of projecting, you should actually question the designers' reasons for this decision and the infrastructure of the designer's home country.

Also - everyone who complains about stuff being made in China - probably 80% of the things you own were made in China, if not more.

I love supporting home-country made products, but sometimes it's just not practical to spend that much more for the same quality product.
  • 11 1
The real fun aspect about this is that our whole lifestyle wouldn't be possible without china and their 'cheap' workforce. Without china the machine you're typing this on probably wouldn't be there.
  • 12 1
These days also, I'd trust the Chinese and Taiwanese to manufacture an equal or better quality product than what we in the western world could make, for half the price.
  • 3 0
probs to Cuban-b he is so right. it can sometimes be unpractical to have things made in the host nation of that company,
  • 8 4
To all you people who want something made in the host country - ask yourself if you'd pay 2x the price for it for the same quality. If the answer's no, then shut up and accept that great product is made in asia. Including the iphone you're using and the Mac you're typing on and the camera you're filming with, etc....
  • 6 3
@Cuban who complained about stuff being made in china? who said it was bad quality?
  • 3 0
Crowaan, the funny thing is that your Rocky Mountain may well be welded in Asia too, despite having a Made In Canada sticker on it! My old steel Vertex was made here, but most were shipped over here to be 'finished', which included having the Made In Canada sticker stuck on!
  • 3 1
I have no problem buying foreign but sometimes I want to buy something that is made by a Canadian company in Canada, or even just made in Canada. And I could care less about buying foreign or domestic cars since more "foreign" cars are made in Canada than so called "domestic." I worked in a plant all summer that made parts of Honda.
  • 3 2
well.... we should care where its made...... 'cause we're paying not just for the materials but also for the salaries of the people who made all that stuff..... and if we pay high prices at least thsi companies should have better wages for their workers.. I really hope you understand this is a point of view we always ignore or try not to look at but that is how exploitation against kids starts.

My bike has been welded by a 10 year old child laborer in China. It's holding up very well!
  • 4 1
Evoc is actually manufactured in Vietnam
  • 2 1
Its the quality control that counts, not just from the factory, but from the Designer (or the Producer I think is the correct terminology). There needs to be multiple QC steps, design to pre-prod, to first run, to random but frequent supply chain QC. This is what sets the quality producers from the mass producers. You can't outsource QC, as its your Brand that gets whacked if quality is poor. Good on them for using Vietnam, there needs to be alternatives.

nowadays, what kind of things that can't be made in china? they're able to create, re-invent, replicate something new.
just like noobs says: all living things are made by God, the rest are made in China.

The upsetting thing is I paid les for my Ventana Terremoto than I would have for the equivalent Pivot, Specialized, Trek, or any other Taiwanese/Chinese built frame. Ventana...designed, machined, welded, painted in the USA. I understand the reduced cost per unit but why aren't we seeing hat on the consumer end?

It was an issue with coding on certain browser/computer combinations as it looked perfect on my machine when it was put together. Resolved now though.

One thing people also don't realize that Taiwan is growing INCREDIBLY. I don't care about the whole Taiwan/China issue, but I've done a lot of research, because like all of us, I had my "doubts" about some foreign wooden village kids making my bike parts, etc. Nothing could be further from the truth. Also, it IS NOT about where it is generally made, but the DESIGN of that product.

Tbh, I trust Taiwan to create my bike. I know with them they are going to get the welds and such right. USA would be nice, but I have a feeling people are just to "lazy" in that sense. Taiwan has that different kind of "drive" that USA lacks. Sure, you can get some guy who absolutely loves bikes to give your bike that "love"...but is he going to have all the necessary and modernized equipment to build it properly? Is he going to have the general manufacturing oversight to produce the bike efficiently? In the end that all costs more money. Taiwan can produce the same quality for cheaper, because they are good and very industrialized towards it. Therefore a bit more money gets poured into better design such as hydro-forming, metal tempering, etc, etc.

TLDR: Taiwan has the absolute capacity to create any design they are tasked to do, very efficiently and consistently. In the end, it's not like you are getting "cheaper" materials in your bike components. It's whether your designer called for that specific part and how the product is designed. A bridge can be built with the best Titanium/Alu/Metals/Steel etc, but, if designed poorly it won't matter. Now get the same materials, build it up properly with the best designers, and you got yourself the best bridge that will last forever.

Anyone who's manufactured anything will tell you: Taiwan not only has top quality processes and materials, but workforce as well. They are progressing faster than China in terms of industrial manufacturing technology, and their cultural and economic infrastructure are there to support it. They hire the best, pay their people well, and are still able to produce technologically advanced goods (carbon DH bikes, cell phones, software) at comparable prices to China. You get what you pay for, and Taiwanese manufacturing is a testament to that.

Taiwan is a highly business/industrialized country. With high GDP ranking within the top 20th in the world (considering the small size, that's not bad at all). Taiwan is an extremely modernized country and produces products PER DESIGN as requested. USA has the "capacity" to make "higher" quality products, but it's never consistent. That's the problem with the US. They "COULD" make good products but most of the time they are VERY inconsistent. With Taiwan, you get consistency, especially in metal fabrication. These guys are very good in making welds and such, it's their life. They are leaders in Silicon Chips, Computer Parts/Components, Metal/Bike Building, etc etc. Not to mention, the Apple computer for example is built in China (use to work in Apple), I've taken apart the computer and know all the design attributes and what not. It's designed very well. The quality of the material is fine. Is it all of a sudden a bad computer? No. It obviously shows that even underpaid workers can build a computer that is durable. My laptop got dropped and ran over by a car going @ 40+mph. Still turned on and it was turned back to us by the police. Is that durable for you? Plus, the same manufacturer built an HP laptop that wouldn't have survived that ordeal. Get it? It's all about the DESIGN. Not WHERE IT IS MADE. I've seen plenty of USA products fail miserably in Quality Department, while Taiwan products succeed in overall durability & finish. Your computer, your TV's, your electronics are made in Taiwan. Why would they be there in the first place if Taiwan couldn't even deliver "quality"? But no, Taiwan delivers as promised, and it works, it's good. Nothing is more a testament than you reading this message on your computer whose 85% chips/components were built over there.

China- anti dumping tax prohibits bike manufacture
Taiwan- attention to detail, fantastic Weld qc, ability to keep, high qc for 1000's of welds
Domestic manufacture- great for small runs, but quality of big runs and price make it prohibitive.

Vietnam- China getting pricey, Vietnam isn't pushing labor rates up so a lot of manufacture being moved there.

For those that say they'rd rather by Canadian etc product, fine. Are you happy to pay 2 times the cost for it?
  • 1 0
Not Canadian but as much as i can afford to id buy Orange.

Im not slating the Taiwanese, Chinese, Vietnamese or whoever else, in fact ive had many bikes produced out there. But, if i can help pay to keep someone with a skilled job over here i will. The reason the quality of work in the UK/ US is shit (when it comes to bulk builds) is because we've relied on Asia because it was cheaper way back when so we've lost those skillsets and now they whoop us at it. We need to get more people in the "west" back in to these industries and asap. Generally we have the engineering know how and not the means to produce any more that balance needs to be addressed.
  • 1 0
i wasn't meaning to include orange in that statement, the quality of their work is spot on..
  • 2 0
99 percent of bikes are made somewhere in Asia today and have been vor about 30 years. They are exactly as good or even better than the bikes made in the usa or somewhere else.

Like the vest but why white? White has to be the worst color. It only looks good out if the box. White says add stains here.

It's meant to be worn under a jersey...

Sweat stain are even worse than mud stains, in my opinion.

things are made in china just because every business wants to earn 500% profit instead of making things on his own country and just earn 250%
at this time someone is being "slaved" for us get our goods

Evoc, very very nice products one of the lousiest customer care service ever, ever. At least in my country (Switzerland). I had a factory faulty backpack that i had to repair at my own expense and then sold to get a dakine.

  • 3 1
Evoc camera bag is a penny under $400. Dakine, basically the same, for $200. Hmm, let me think about that one
  • 1 0
Dakine is boss too, I've had a bag that I use for DH biking only and it's been through NASTY crashes, and it's still perfect. Will never switch to another company for keeping my s##t safe!

damn that world champ stripes bag is sexy! the white wont last here in vancouver but they most likely have a bag with black and WC stripes in the works if not already out

I love my Lowepro camera bags, but they really lack the style of companies like Evoc and Dakine. Nice to see more alternatives out there these days.
