The Phenom and The Fearless

What a weekend! From June 27th to 30th the famous X Games stopped in Munich for the very first time and pumped up the historic Olympic Park with amazing extreme sport action. At the premiere of the Mountain Bike Slopestyle contest, two Conti athletes reached for medals: Anton Thelander won gold in the junior contest Red Bull Phenom and Andreu Lacondeguy took home bronze for his fearless run during the main slopestyle event.

It couldn’t be more exciting: the unreliable weather didn’t make it easy for the slopestyle riders. On Friday, training took place as planned, but on Saturday, rain hindered the second round of practice before the main competition the following day. With respectively small preparation time, the weather on Sunday was not for the faint hearted. First up, at midday was Anton Thelander who was determined to make his runs stick and started in the Red Bull Phenom contest with high spirits. This separate event was carried out on the same course as the main slopestyle competition and gave six aspiring athletes the opportunity to put their skills to the test on an extremely large course. Despite strong winds and an unfortunate slip during his first run on the step-up, the convinced Continental Race King rider stood calm and collected at the top of the 8m starting, ready to drop in again for his second run. Anton nailed it! He impressed the judges with a huge flat spin 360, two tail whips and a stunning 360 on the massive final drop. A well deserved gold medal for the young Swede!

For Catalonian rider, Andreu Lacondeguy who has a strong preference for big dirt jumps a childhood dream came true when he was announced as a rider for X Games Munich. Although he too had to tackle the strong wind and actually struggled one week before with 2 dislocated fingers, he trusted in his YT Industries hardtail and X-Kings tires to keep his grip on the fast slopestyle course during the finals. Andreu was just two runs away from realizing his childhood dream and as the Bavarian evening sun lowered on to the horizon, he dropped in. His first run didn’t last long after he lost his line on to the first big booter. But Andreu climbed back up to the top and dropped in again, this time he powered through the entire course. The big mountain lover showed thousands of spectators a toboggan drop, a massive backflip x up at the 45 foot dirt step up, a flatspin at the step up, a 360 out of the satellite dish, no foot can at the log ride, a backflip and another no foot can at the final drop. His bronze X Games Munich medal will certainly have a place of honor in his trophy cabinet.

Lacondeguy wins bronze with this run - 77.00

This whole Event was a mess ! A 6 Hour ride, 4 Hours to wait, only 6 Riders and 20 Bucks for a 25 Minute show ??? Rheeder and Semenuk had crazy Runs but i think Antons Run was even better than Andreus. It was not that windy. 13 Year old Kids made Mc Twists and Stuff in the Mega Ramp. It was a bad look for us Freeriders

You so right. Darren should be on 3th place , he was the only one who made two good clean runs!
  • 62 5
Oh, it wasn't that windy? Did you ride the course and test the wind yourself?
  • 14 4
Not that windy? I guess riders were just voluntarily wiping out on their own then? Those were huge jumps to be riding in any amount of wind, huge props to you guys for carrying on with the show. And good job Raymond! Shame about the weather.

It was just only to look at the trees and how they were moved by the wind... Riding in big jumps with a lot of wind is a challenge, i can tell that and it's terrible...
  • 4 2
I'd like to see you guys try organise it then

All some benders do is complain. I really enjoyed watching the X games, good to see MTB making an appearance, the course looked sick, bring on more..
  • 1 1
well cant wait to see the next time x games puts it on again...im sure it will be a lot better...hope anyway

Mega ramp was at the bottom, the higher you are (especially top of a hill with little trees) the more wind there is.. Try dropping 25ft with just a little wind, it makes quite the difference. Side note, Ray/Tom you killed it boys! North 'Mercia! Haha

@weezy your first name should be mo and ur last should be Ron

Moron!!!!

Funny how people blame the course designers that created other amazing contest runs along with Darren being one of the supervisors, instead of the insane wind they had to deal with. Yup, course design should be blamed for the bad weather!
  • 3 4
Yes this was a bad course ! Freeride is not for supermarket parkings, it's for big mountains... This race was just a joke for both Freeriders and Slopestyle riders

Lolo- jumps and wooden features that are built for slope courses are just as artificial regardless if they're on "big mountains" or in venues like this. Chatel is the only slope course that could be considered otherwise but really though, that's a pretty absurd point of contention you have with the course built for the X-Games.

It was more windy when the phenom riders went down and matt jones is definitely going to be one to look out for, i hope Big Grin

its hilarious how no one actually knows what theyre talking about. id love to see you guys ride the course...

Everyone seemed to try their best with what they had. The course builders were limited by the terrain nearby the x games event. I heard them saying that the start ramp was the highest point in munich to try and get the elevation needed but it was clearly too exposed and was therefore too windy to allow the guys to throw down their best. They also needed all the pedalling to make enough speed for enough features when the actual downhill was limited. There were a few awesome runs by the top two and they were given extremely high scores so hopefully that shows that the judges were suitably impressed and if we are lucky we will get an invite back next year to somewhere where a better course can be built and the top riders can really show off what our sport has to offer.

I thought the commentating was pretty funny. Dennis Mccoy was going on and on about how much time you have in the air on the last drop to do a myriad of tricks. He suggested a 720 would be a good trick to look for on that feature. I can't imagine anyone doing a 720 off that drop.
  • 4 0
Haha yeah the commmentators didnt know a ton about mountain biking
  • 3 6
Yeah what would McCoy know? He's only a pro BMX rider who was competing in vert & street at 44 years old. Maybe he still does. McCoy is a baws & he knows more about bike riding than anyone that rode that course in Munich. Travis Pastrana does 360 flips, double flips & 720s on MX bikes. So yeah Dennis does know. He knows more about FMB than either of you because a 720 is possible on any hit on that course, & it's disgraceful that we weren't seeing them. If Andreu recently dislocated 2 fingers then maybe that explains his weak run. What is harder to explain is how it was still good enough for 3rd place!!!!
  • 4 0
Yeah freeride-forever, now show us how good you are, and post a vid of you doing all you said ! Can't wait to see it
  • 2 0
His reasoning for a 720 being doable off that drop was that Garrett Reynolds has done them down stairs. Yes he's a legend but he doesn't know the sport of Mountain Biking if he thought it would be perfectly normal for a 720 to be done down that drop.
  • 1 0
Yeah man absolutely! Course should have been a bunch of skatepark features with a couple stair hucks so that everyone could freeride forever!
  • 1 0
I'd like to see one person do a 720 in the middle of the howling wind. Do you realize that everyone that was riding there were the top pros in the whole sport? Do you really think they were struggling because of their lack of skill? What is your point here? The course didn't flow very well and you were very very very high in the air for a long time on the first 2 hits which made you super duper susceptible to even the slightest bit of wind.

I heard the X-Games is creating a new downhill event to build upon the success of Red Bull Phenom- it takes place on Mt. Everest and you can only use a hardtail, not to mention there's a whopping 3 contestants this time!!

Well done X-Games, I will post a vid of me on my local dirt jumps to be part of it ! It's my dream
  • 3 1
Well I think andreu deserved the bronze it was pretty windy and he was riding with dislocated fingers and bruised ankles and gave it his best shot he earned it. Fair enough he wasn't riding at his usual standard but got the job done and gets a big respect from me
  • 5 0
The course looked so poor, I feel bad for all the riders..
  • 2 0
Everybody knows that Andreu is a specialist on big jumps, but he had two hurt fingers there, he said that 4 days before the x games on facebook.
  • 6 1
 berrecloth got robbed?
  • 4 1
 yes he did
  • 6 3
the whole event was a shambles
  • 4 3
What about talking about semenuk and rheeder? Don't get me wrong, big fan of andreu, but there were two other crazy runs.
  • 8 1
I'ts a Continental press release, guess Rheeder and Semenuk don't ride for them
  • 2 1
its a (paid for) press release so they will only be talking about there riders,..
  • 2 1
Ah, makes sense. Not sure if just my phone or not but it doesn't have it as by anyone, that makes sense.
  • 1 0
it was suprising andreu didnt throw one of dope supermans though that wouldve been sick to see
  • 6 9
I don't like the course, too many berms, pumps and pedal sections. The features are also a bit unrealistic. They need to start building some proper old school dirt jumps as well as the new-style features to encourage some ground-breaking tech tricks that everyone wants to see.
  • 16 0
they have bmx for dirt jump and stuff. the course as to be big for mtb to make it in the xgames. if its too similar to bmx everyone's gonna laugh at how mtb tricks are not in the game compare to bmx. that course shows that mtb is different from dirt jumps
  • 10 0
they just need a course that flows...
  • 4 3
Agree if mtb is to be in x games it has to seperate itself from bmx in a massive way... problem is the venues dont lend themselves to huge slope style courses... I dosent bother me if x games ever has another comp. I dont like what they did to skate boarding. Real skating is in streets through cars on public property... mountian biking belongs in the woods not a public square
  • 2 0
 Claw got robbed.
  • 2 3
Sorry, but Anton deserved the Bronze, Andreu run was lame compared to Antons run and Claws run was better than Andreu's so with that said, is a press release really needed?
  • 10 1
Anton was on Red Bull Phenon comp and not on the main slope comp, and yeah maybe Claws run was better, he tricket the drops and Andreu did small trick but, Andreu tricked the doubles and Claw didnt so I dont konw who was better haha
  • 3 3
Yeah I know Anton run was during the Phenom comp, but he outrode the whole "PRO" field except for Semenuk and Rheeder, Andreu should give up his bronze, lolol,..Fair enough Claw and Andreu had equal runs,.lololol
  • 3 2
Claw threw 3 360s in his run and that's why it was scored lower.
  • 1 0
so sick and everything but that wasn't a t.bog...
