There has been a lot of head scratching in the pits this evening. Richie Rude was utterly dominant today. While he may have won the first two stages, the 33 seconds he put into everybody on the third and final stage that is just mind-blowing. It was a stage that many thought would not figure much in the fight for the win, but somehow he found the pace to put himself into a commanding position going into the second day of racing. In the women's field, Cecile Ravanel is equally dominant, but something that is expected from her this season. In the under-21 field, the two leading lights, Adrien Dailly and Seb Claquin are clear of their rivals with times that would place them both inside the senior top ten.

Richie Rude. Has anyone ever been up by that much time after day 1 in the EWS? Also his Mountain Creek video. Just damn.

If Richie and Aaron win the EWS and WC, I might not move to Canada if Donald Trump becomes president.

What is most impressive about Rude is not his physical abilities on the bike or his stamina, which are certainly impressive in their own rites, but rather his mental acuity and maturity for a rider of his age. The EWS is a much like the TDF in that it takes a lot of strategy and consistency to come out on top, which tends to favor more experienced riders, and makes Rude's dominance that much more impressive. If he stays healthy, what's he gonna be like in 5 years!? Gwinning pt 2?

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could appreciate Sam Hill without mentioning pedals? Dare to dream, I guess. Good job Sam - keep it going! And what can you say about Richie? He looks like he's wearing a full pressure suit under his jersey. I am guessing he is not. Beast!! Great photos, Trump and Matts!
  • 10 2
I agree. Congrats to Richie. But Sam Hill is killing it!

I do believe it is time to stop talking about Sam Hill's pedal choice. It's getting boring. The guy is just fast on a bike and a great rider. Pedals are a personal choice, and he rides what he is most comfortable on. This story is old.
  • 8 8
It may be an old story. But it's still so damn cool.
  • 14 1
 @a-m-c:
No. It's simply old news. Sam Hill finishing 2nd in every stage yesterday is a much better story.
  • 4 0
Yes, enough already, talk more about Sam and his possible transition into EWS full time? not? his impeccable skills, but enough about the pedals already. 15 years of pedal talk, we get it, he rides flat pedals, he rides better with them. Thats it, done.

Controversial statement alert: Enduro is one of the best things to ever happen to mountain biking.
  • 4 0
 Explain
  • 8 1
Controversial reply. You're right, 100% right. It's the bike equivalent to WRC racing, where XC is formula 1 and DH is Baja. Riding "normal" bikes the way normal people ride them. Plus, much more racing to watch at each event, a format that can be carried over to most areas of the world, and most importantly a dedicated sanctioning body, not a one size fits all like UCI.
  • 2 1
It is prolly one of the best things to hit mtb, we have had DH and XC in one form or another for 20 odd years. Now thats not sayin we should do Enduro instead of XC or DH, that implies our sport has limited growth potential which clearly it does not.
  • 1 1
100% agree. I think it has made bikes better for most people too!
  • 1 0
@maxyedor: Good analogy, but DH is more formula 1 than XC
  • 25 2
 Rude is a goddamn machine!
  • 16 2
It seems every race Graves is having problems but somehow stays with everyone, imagine a flawless race, what an animal.
  • 10 1
How did Cecile Ravanel hit Jared Graves? I think Graves is awesome...one of my favorites, but I'm sorry, this is a world level event, and you're standing on track when the fastest woman in the world (today) comes down the hill. I'm sure he feels horrible, but that's some serious shit!! Don't really know what I expect him, or the ews to do, but I wish racers could me more certain the course would be clear of spectators. It seems like world class athletes would be the first to understand this.
  • 1 0
 Yes ^^
  • 20 1
There was no tape on the inside of a long off camber traverse.... she swing pretty high across the off camber to make a shortcut to the switchback below and Jared was there watching. Pretty far from established trail... that same area was full of spectators earlier and I'm surprised none of them got hit.... harmless mistake if anything, and neither person did anything "wrong"

  • 1 0
Were they ever Yeti teammates? Or was Gwin gone when Richie arrived?
  • 3 0
@herzalot: I don't even think Richie was old enough to drive when Gwin was on Yeti. Doubt they were team mates
  • 7 1
People were bemoaning Rude leaving DH to move over to the EWS. Think by now he's more than proved himself and even more, what it takes to be on the top step with a stacked field like that.

And to those that claim Enduro is full of washed up DH riders, they have no clue. Hill is crushing it. Barel showed up at Les Gets and slayed it (minus the course tape). Graves, Rude's friend and mentor, has yet to put the pressure on Rude.
  • 2 0
As right as you are, I'd still love to see Rude back for a couple WC DH races per year. With Hill and Troy crossing over, we now have a reasonable gauge of how top DH guys will do in EWS. Would be cool to have some of the top EWS guys move back to DH and see how they do. Plus, as a Rude and Graves fan, I want to see both of them at more races.
  • 1 0
I wouldn't call them washed up. It is a different feel to it though, definitely a less stacked field. I wish more WC DH riders would hop in EWS races between WCs.
  • 5 0
Great photos. It's interesting looking at the times of the UCI downhillers. After one day of Enduro they have pretty much an entire season's worth of competitve descending time from their regular gigs.
