Practice was something of an unknown coming into this race. In previous years, while the Enduro des Portes du Mercantour has always been a big race, spread over two days, it has always been blind. However, at the EWS-level blind racing has been pushed out of the circuit and the rules now state that practice is mandatory. So the question for this week was - how do you organize practice for a race where the riders will tackle 3,200m of climbing during the race days?

Two days of practice was a non-starter - even for the elite riders, 6,400m up in four days would be pushing it. Even if you throw in some shuttles and a chairlift, it was still looking like a horror show. The compromise the organization decided on was to add an extra half day on Wednesday - so from 1pm stages one to four would be open, and then the same again on Thursday from 9am. On Friday riders could then hit five through to eight, assisted by the ski lift in the next town down the valley from Valberg, Beuil. Even with shuttles and two and a half days to practice the eight stages, it has still been a big week for riders, not helped by the ever-changing weather that soaks then dries the course - and with many of the pros taking multiple laps of the stages (except three, we haven't heard of anyone tackling that twice) there has been a hell of a lot of descending to do and a savage amount of climbing to come on Saturday...

Guys, the pictures you publish are so sharp, balanced... perfect that when I look at mine I'm like 'meh, why do I own a dslr? ' I'm curious about the percentage of pictures that are good v/s trash. Does it take 200 riders to get one perfect or do you roughly have 1 good example for every racer?
Cheers, and keep up the amazing coverage, you're kind of teachers/guru for me when it comes to pixels. :-)

I'd say it's not so much good photos v. Bad phots and more so good v. bad angles. We test a lot if differebt angles for variety and some work and others don't at all, but it's that search that leads to more unique stuff. Once an angle is nailed down it can be repeated over and over.

Both Jesse Melamed and Seb Claquin still on the RM Altitude and not the new Slayer? Would have thought the Slayer would be more appropriate for these trails (they don't look too smooth...).

The bike was release couple weeks ago, they have their habits on altitude so i think ....
  • 3 0
Altitude is still a super capable bike, maybe they've decided the horrendous transfer stages warrant a bike that is more pedal friendly. Braaap either way!

Whats the point of the handguard on an MTB? Especially for a pro. We've all seen Nico V. use then and now Matti Lehikoinen use them. Is this going to be the next fad in MTB? Now that these Pros are doing it, are we going to see enduro racers sporting these things? God I hope not!
  • 10 0
I don't always wear gloves and at a recent enduro my hands got smashed open by a bramble bush. Hand guards would definitely have stopped it. Enduro courses aren't manicured like dh/xc ones.
  • 5 0
Recently I clipped a tree with my handlebar/ knuckle and the impact was enough to snap a bone in my hand. I'm all for handguards if they can stop that happening again.
  • 6 0
These guys covered it already but the point is to guard your hands. I like the idea. I even think they look cool. What's the problem?
  • 1 0
Branches pulling your brakes are fun... No, it was about time we got handguards for mtb, we aren't all riding on groomed trails here.

Pardon my ignorance but that looks a lot like charcoal they're racing on. Captain?
  • 2 1
It's actually a mix of clay and chalk. It's usually light grey but gets much darker when wet ... and that the photo is post processed ( not offence at all ) .
But... yeah, it looks strange at first.
  • 22 0
Geologist (and local) here. No coal there, only deep-marine marls (very fine-grained sediments) carrying a few organic matter giving this dark colour. And the wetter, the darker, obviously. These marls alternate with thin turbiditic layers (deep-marine sandy deposits) very similar to those bearing oil in South Atlantic. But nothing producible is known here (except a few gas maybe).
  • 1 0
@polarproton: No chalk here bro Smile
  • 3 0
@Matt-Pau: Thanks for the insight! I didn't know so went on the internet and found the chalk/clay composition for the Terres Noires around Dignes. I'm more used to red rocks than black earth. :p
  • 2 0
@polarproton: You're welcome! Chalk is only made by microscopic shells, while marls have fossils (ex. ammonites, belemnites and sea urchins) but are mainly composed by both clay minerals and carbonates. The clayer it is, the muddier it is when it pours! Moreover, chalk make (white) cliffs (ex. 'Falaises d'Etretat'), while marls erode in badlands, = slopy terrains (just like in the famous Green River videos). Smile
