 Totally agree - any other professional race series has the sh!t sorted before rolling into a race weekend. This appears a bit amateur. Hell if someone for our ride group shows up w a bike needing repairs before riding we heckle them!

 @onemind123: well its only wednesday so most these pics are from yesterday i'm guessing. so basically they have a week to get bikes built and sus rebuilt. Its not like they are showing up right 20 min before the race getting forks rebuilt.

 Suspension definitely works better after a fresh rebuild, so unless they can have a couple spare forks just hanging out, right before the race seems like the way to do it. Plus, Rockshox and Fox don't have factory teams, so this way all the guys get factory support

 @swamper1: So do the suspension techs do all that work for free, and if so is it only for the sponsored riders? If you were a privateer and snuck your gear in the line without getting caught that would be pretty sweet. I guess a suspension sponsorship = perfectly rebuilt forks & shocks every ride.

 @b26-4-Life: yeah my take on it is that away from the races the pros dint have that constant availability of the factory mechanics. They have their own mechanics and their own skills to rely on. At the races the factory mechanics are there to provide full rebuilds/tuning etc etc . They may take away new set ups or new equipment to test inbetween rounds and then give feed back and decide with help from the factory mechanic what is best. That video from Jordi the other day was so informative in such a short vid that its obvious that the suspension mechanics have a large input into what setups the pros ride . ........just my take on things

 @nismo325: it just seems odd that you'd wait until the week that you're racing to change out bearings, for example, instead of doing it right after the last race. Specially when they have so few round and a month in between. I understand holding off on the suspension since you may be waiting on new goodies or dialing in settings specific for that track or whatever. But some of this stuff like brake bleeds, suspension bearings, bottom brackets, etc seem like it could be done right after the last race or anytime prior to the start of the race weekend.

 As you can imagine, after the previous race, the bikes were cleaned and put away. You travel to the next venue and things get taken apart and rebuilt as necessary. Routine to overhaul the bike, bleed the brakes, service the fork and shock before a World Cup event. As Nismo says, there is plenty of time before the race runs. They will be tweaking things as necessary. The suspension work can be done by the rider's mechanic or by the factory techs at the race. Obviously, it eases the work load on the mechanic if he can outsource the fork and shock to the manufacturer.

 @matadorCE: Well i know for race day they run hubs and stuff with super thin oil to make things roll faster but it kills internals so the have to be rebuilt/ changed more. Also i've heard these teams do brake bleeds constantly during the weekends. I'm sure lots of these bikes get shipped in pieces so they have to built at each race too but with the teams these guys have building a bike up is no worries.

 @matadorCE: They are getting their stuff rebuilt all the time, especially for races. I wouldn't be surprised if they replaced the bearings, rebled brakes, and rebuilt the suspension before the race either. They'll do anything they can to gain an extra second or two.

 @slowrider73: True in many instances for you and me...except at this level they tear down to the most basic level just because. I tend to think the majority of mechanicals we see here come about as a result of all the monkeying they do. I mean how many broken chains do you see in repeated miles of everyday trail riding? Compare that to a single DH race.

Honestly, is there really benefit to bleeding brakes so often? I contend the mechanic is more likely to do unintended harm. If it ain't broke don't fix it?

 @tcmtnbikr: Brake bleeds at the consumer level aren't done often enough. Run it too long, and the fluid will fill with contaminants and moisture, especially those that are a DOT based system. This is a major reason so many experience issues with Avid/SRAMs; when boiled tiny air bubbles will become larger bubbles and float to the top, and boiling fluid reeks havoc on seals and hoses. This causes them to break down, and fill the system with debris. Hoses that are bad will expand when compressed and lack full pressure, and broken down seals will gum up the system. Many aren't willing to perform the in-depth service needed to clean out the system- even most shop mechanics. This is why many will recommend Shimano's over any DOT system because DOT fluid is so damaging to seals and hoses - and the time/labor and parts usually adds up to the cost of a new brake. Shimano still have issues if run long enough without service, but with a non-caustic fluid its a much slower process.

 @mtnbykr05: I agree. I try to bleed my brakes a few times a season and or when the feel becomes mushy or inconsistent. This usually happens with Shimano from water contamination. Because the mineral oil doesn't absorb water like a DOT fluid, issues arise more frequently however bleeding is a much simpler affair so it doesn't bother me. DOT fluid brakes can go much loner without performance issues, however shouldn't, for the reasons you cited.

 Many of the racers (Finn Iles for example) brought their bikes with them to do some filming. Also they do them so soon before the race cause they have time, and they are fresher (I guess...).

 Having worked in bike shops for years I think I know a lot about how a bike works, how to do most maintenance, tear downs and builds. I forget that there's a world of fresh (and not so fresh) riders out there, some the best in the world, who have almost no idea how their bikes work.

 The only reason for eagle being everywhere is that there's lots of sponsored SRAM riders, no one needs a 50t, especially not pro riders. It's an advert, I bet the largest two cogs never get used.

 But hardly anyone makes big chainrings, 38t is not big, I run 38 with a 11-23 cassette. A 50t on the front would make sense, 1:1 lowest gear and 5:1 top, that would be fast but overkill. Like I said no one needs eagle

 Ask the women... they did some close footages at a steep section of the world championship last weekend and the women used it even with 32T chainring - like the world champ Annika Langvad. The men's field is different they were running 36-38T already with the 11 speed so I don't think they have much use of the 50t cog and won't go up to 40-42T chainrings either...

 I did watch a few videos to see if anyone used 1st, I'll have another look. I guess they do like to sit and spin. That's not how I ride, I like to stand and push a hard gear, bmx style. Which is why I have no interest in droppers either. And I do race xc sometimes before anyone says I don't ride enough, dh and enduro too. I like a good race

 @turbohippy: Check it out again - the women's race. Smile The world cup XC courses are kind of crazy I am not sure you would clear those steep rocky rooty climbs through a whole race by standing and pushing a hard gear. Even Kulhavy couldn't do it after lap 2 and he's not a guy who likes to spin he's pushing crazy high gears. Smile Having said that I wouln't be surprised if no one in men's field used the 50t cog especially the top riders.

 @bosnianrider: Well a couple of factors to consider. One @turbohippy nor anyone else on this website goes nearly as fast as the worlds best XC riders and the gears they use is not a good way to compare it. These are much lighter bikes with much lighter riders going at a higher rate of speed. Turbohippy are you a National champion or something? Most likely not so watch and learn do not confuse your opinion with your expertise. Go for a 5hr ride on a 30lbs bike in the alps and put on a 34t front ring and I bet you 100$ you will use your new friend the 50t rear cog or be walking as all the fat Frenchies pass you on Ebikes. The Eagle will soar move on.

 Eagle was not designed for pro riders, it's for rich old men to ride really slowly up any hill they come across. We don't all need bikes geared for the Alps and when I go there I take a 40lb dh rig with a 39t. Chair lifts are the way to get up hills

 Not quite, there have been more than two people winning consistently... Also they are all on different machines, not just one bike is suited to each track. In F1: long straights, merc wins; twisty, red bull; a mixture, ferrari. In DH and bike can win on any track.

 What could you break stripping a bike? AFAIK the only reverse thread is one pedal. I've stripped my bike many times (except BB, fork and cassette because lack of tools) and I can't figure out what could you break...

On the putting together that's more likely, for instance over tightening bolts.

 I'd say the set-ups for DH are more standard, and it's usually bikes we're already familiar with. XC seems to be more creative in finding ways to save weight, which results in much more head scratching set-ups.
