Superstar Components AM Carbon Wheelset - Review

Superstar AM Carbon Tesla EVO Wheelset

Superstar is a UK direct-sales company that has built up an enviable reputation over the last few years for really well priced and highly capable products, with a range that started with brake pads, pedals, handlebars and other components, but with these new carbon fiber wheels they’re really pushing the boat out. It’s also a sign of how much more affordable carbon fiber has become in the last decade that Superstar is able to offer a high quality set of carbon wheels for £599, half the price of other well-known carbon wheels.

Details:
• Purpose: Trail/all-mountain/enduro
• Material: Carbon fiber rims
• Diameters available: 26” and 27.5”
• Width: 24mm internal, 30mm external
• Spokes: Sapim CX Ray
• Tubeless: Tubeless-ready with optional rim strip
• Weight: 1,694g (757g front, 937g, rear)
• Price: £599

Superstar has teamed Tesla Evo hubs with high quality Sapim CX-Ray bladed spokes, Sapim nipples and a chunky tubeless-ready carbon fiber rim. They’re only available in 26" and 27.5" sizes - you’ll have to shop elsewhere if you want carbon wheels for your 29er. The rims have a 30mm external width and 24mm internal width. They’re tubeless-ready, with Superstar’s own Lokr bead profile, although a tubeless rim kit isn't included - the wheels simply come preinstalled with a regular rim tape.

To ensure compatibility with the wide range of axle standards, the hubs feature interchangeable end caps. The test wheels came with a requested 15mm front and 142x12mm rear hub setup. The hubs roll on sealed SKF cartridge bearings around a 17mm axle. The freehub, a 7075 and CNC machined unit, features 72 points of engagement and is compatible with Shimano 8/9/10/11-speed cassettes. Superstar offers an optional XD freehub body which allows the use of SRAM XD 11 speed cassettes. If you’re feeling flush, the hubs can be upgrade to DT Swiss or Chris King.

Carbon fiber is associated with light weight, and on the scales the 27.5in test wheels weighed 1,694g (757g front, 937g, rear), a bit heavier than the claimed 1,663g, but well within acceptable limits. That weight compares well to the Reynolds 27.5 AM Carbon Wheelset, but is a quite a bit heavier than the much more expensive Enve M60 Forty wheels. Helping to ease any concerns that some potential customers might have is the two year warranty, lifetime free truing service and crash replacement discount scheme. RRP is £599. (Pricing in USD isn't provided due to the fact that Superstar does not currently ship to the United States.)

On The Trail

I noticed the wheels' weight (lighter than the wheels they replaced) and the stiffness of the wide carbon rims immediately on the first ride. They feel very direct, with a high level of responsiveness that makes direction changes snappy and instant. They’re not so massively stiff that the bike feels edgy or harsh either, but there’s no flex when you load them up into bermed corners or rattle through a root garden. The wheels give the bike more pop and energy, and the weight does help climbing and acceleration, which is improved.

Setting up the wheels tubeless was pretty straightforward: a strip of Gorilla tape and an extra long tubeless valve - the rims are much deeper than regular rims - and with a bit of soapy water on the tire beads, and some persuasion and a lot of PSI, the tires popped up and seated, with the reassuring “pop” and “snap” sounds as the beads located into position, all using a track pump.

Concerns over carbon fiber's durability and toughness have subsided over the years as more carbon products have hit the market and proved itself at the toughest events like World Cup downhill races and enduro events. Nonetheless, I kept a close eye on the rims as I pounded them over my local trails, and deliberately looked for the rougher lines and took them out on some rocky trails just to punish them as much as I could, and to see how they held up. And hold up they did, fending off the worst abuse I could put their way. I know carbon fiber terrifies some people, but there was nothing terrifying about these wheels at all. They’re bombproof.

Also proving to be very durable are the bearings in the hubs and freehub; they’re still running smooth after several months of riding and in some muddy conditions with a fair few jet washes. The freehub provides a snappy engagement and spoke tension is still good after a couple of months riding, showing that the wheels were very well built in the first place. It’s nice to know that Superstar offer a free truing service and the warranty and crash replacement will offer peace of mind for a lot of potential customers.

No concerns with strength or durability, these are tough and sturdy rims.

Issues

I’ve never really had problems getting tires on rims on other wheelsets before, but I had a few issues with the Superstars, mainly because of the slightly raised inner profile of the rim bed. While adopting a tubeless setup resulted in a mostly painless operation, using the wheels with tires and tubes, as you might if you’re frequently swapping tires for different conditions, wasn’t quite as painless. Getting the tires on proved to be quite a mission, and because of the raised inner, there isn’t really enough space for the tire bead and inner tube. I couldn’t push the tires on with just my thumbs, I definitely needed to resort to using tire levers to get them into place. I also had the odd issue of the tire bead not positioning correctly despite inflating the inner tube to 40 PSI, but a generous application of soapy water to the bead encouraged it into position. I also had to purchase new inner tubes with 60mm valve stems as well, the rim is that deep. So they’re not without their issues, but going tubeless circumvents them.

Pinkbike's Take:

bigquotesWhile a set of carbon fiber wheels undoubtedly adds a dollop of bling to any bike, and that's reason enough for some people to upgrade to them, there are performance benefits to be had as well. These wheels are highly impressive with a solid build quality that makes them a fine upgrade over your stock wheels. They strike a good balance of weight versus price, and come with a warranty and crash replacement policy that certainly helps to provide peace of mind even for carbon skeptics. If you really want carbon wheels but don't have the funds for a top-end carbon wheelset, these are a credible option, and not to be sniffed at just because they're inexpensive, because the performance is anything but cheap - David Arthur

From the light bicycle website. Wheel sets are available.

Light bicycle may have had some QC issues at its inception, but they are awesome now.

+/- 200 miles on my new set and still perfectly true after substantial abuse.
  • 3 1
Light-Bicycle- Impressed! Two busted spokes on rear, still riding them (just too busy to replace spokes), going strong after a good series of 4' drops to flat and an 8' to a medium transition, plus railing down trails; rims are still going strong!

A carbon wheel set at this price point are making other carbon wheel sets a mere joke,26'' option too well at least this company isn't hypnotized by the industry to kill the 26'' wheel size.Prop's for Superstar.
  • 8 0
I have two set of LB wheels and would consider these as an alternative. There is not a massive price difference once you take into account carriage and import taxes, plus, if you need warranty (as I have on one rim) it takes another month+carriage+import duty and rim rebuild.

Blue flow hydros on hope pro 2 evos absolutley awesome and nice guys to deal with based in nottingham. Stuart the owner even hand delivered them, which was a nice touch

Light wheels website is a little misleading the price quoted if for Novatech hubs, for Hope they want 850USD .

 599 squids equals 1200 wombats

Light Bike wheels on hopes are $833, $78 shipping to UK, $32 paypal fee - $943 in total - which is £605, there really is very little in it. Same for the weight - 1694g for Superstar and 1675g for light bicycle.

just ordered a set of lb's cannot wait!

apart from the hope hubs you gimp

I have over 2500 miles on my LB set and have yet to touch a spoke with a wrench.
  • 4 2
Yeah, made that mistake. Two busted rims later, I'll stick with someone who knows how to build a carbon rim, thanks.
  • 3 2
That's is a good price for carbon wheels, but you'll never convince me that carbon is "bomb-proof"

I just built some E13 wheels with Hope Pro hubs for AM use, and they are lighter than the Light Bike wheels.and cost less.

I was told in March that I would get my LB rim in 20 -25 days. It has been 130 days now....Most of the time Nancy does not even respond to emails I find.

Good luck through rock gardens, I've seen some newer light bicycle hoops crack recently that were supposedly the "good" ones, not trying to hate just giving you guys a heads up. Possibly just too low on air could have been the issue but you've been warned.
  • 2 0
Mishtar, can't you file a paypal complaint (assuming that is how you paid)?
  • 2 1
It is a replacement warranty rim which is why they are taking there time.

@ worm-burner, I'm very happy with my new Spank oozy wheel set 1,640 gm and a measly 700 wombats....... no need for enviro unfriendly carbon in my humble opinion.....

Hello Superstar here, just a quick update the wheels in the photos are the Switch ultra hubs (SKF bearings and 27 engagements) which are built with sapim lasers and carbon rims for £449.99 currently. So even more of a bargain!

Any questions please let me know, Superstar

yes please make some 29'er rims.

What is the value of the "crash replacement discount scheme"?

@superstarcomponents, I've been thinking about buying a set of your tesla hubs and was wondering how many pawls the freehub uses, and if it is a 36t ring with staggered pawls to achieve the 72poe.
Thanks

Any plans to ship to USA?
  • 8 6
no sell to USA, no care.

Thank you for the corrections superstar!
@david arther please correct your article.

A set of carbon Am on Tesla evo's is definatly on my wanted list.
  • 1 0
Yes please make them in 29" and hookless, which is not only makes a stronger rim, but also happens to be much easier for tooling and surface finish...

 No US = No care.

Might as well be looking at breast implants.

@nickd1979 i got 2pcs 29er 30mm external width and 24mm internal width carbon rims from Tandellcycling, about 10 days arrived in Kentucky with EMS shipping, low invoice value allow no customs tax yet, riding some miles with those rims, run with WTB TCS tubeless tire, wheels perform well
  • 17 2
Well done...a 26" on a NEW cf rims. This does make you guys a SUPERSTAR in the biz!
  • 9 0
I have these wheels in 26 inch with the stealth graphics and Switch hubs which look much nicer than the ones pictured here. My order arrived next day but came with the wrong rear hub adaptor. I had to re-order the correct one. Tubeless setup was difficult (compared to how easy it is with Stans Flow EX rims anyway) but did work with a track pump and has remained reliable since. I just had to have a lot of patience. The bead lock really does lock onto a tyre.

I paid for both wheels to be re-trued at my LBS because one of the wheels was out of line with the frame and the other had very low tension spokes. I would pretty much have any machine built wheel checked over by my LBS before riding though and even my Hope Hoops with Flow EX rims needed tightening up before being ridden.

All that aside they have been bomb proof since and the performance improvement on my bike is nothing short of astonishing. They've taken everything in their stride.

The hub bearings have held up so far too and are silky smooth. Almost Hope Hub smooth. Pretty amazing really.

I hope Superstar continue to make 26 inch Carbon wheels.
  • 8 0
I have these hubs on a different wheelset, I can confirm they are going fine after 2 and a half years. Changed bearings about 6 months ago. Good as new. The hubs are in fact novatecs with a superstar sticker and a cheaper price tag.
  • 5 0
My friend has superstar and i have novatec hubs. Axles and cassete body are compatible. Just different stickers Wink
  • 8 0
The point is -- others are getting into the game and driving down the price of carbon rims. Good for all of us!
  • 5 0
Shame they use alloy nipples in their carbon wheels. Galvanic corrosion isn't a pretty site when it starts eating away at your carbon. Not good news if it happens out of sight inside your rims..
  • 1 0
I'll probably build my own, is brass better? Or something else?
  • 3 0
I hate to be picky but it's time wheelmakers understand that tubeless ready means TUBELESS READY, not once you remove the standard strip and put tape in. I'm sorry but these are NOT tubeless ready at all! It's like saying raw chicken is ready to eat, but after you cook it. Rant over.
  • 5 1
The braid weave carbon on the exterior is cosmetic not structural, so just for bragging that ya got some carbon hoops. But they also took care of that with that big CARBON(!!) sticker.
  • 1 0
Looks like a 2HS weave, but if you can tell the weave and weight of fabric used from an (albeit unclear) picture, then you must be a super composites engineer?
  • 3 0
One word: Plastics. Alas, I failed out of composites school, but I have read that most wheels are unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber since it it stronger than weave, and the weave is just an external layer to give it a carbon look for those who want that extra bit of bling. But, no I do not know how these were built.
  • 1 0
There are many different layer types within that layup that all give different structural properties. Given the weave on the outside, which is not twill, it serves a functional purpose. I would be surprised to see any 2x2 twill on any structural parts, which is typically the outermost layer on all cosmetic automotive parts.

If you don't like the stickers ( I don't ) there is a stealth version wwith charcoal grey stickers, invisible from just a few meters away.

I did some lab testing of these rims on behalf of Superstar. Part of the work involved inspection of micro-section cut through the rim to check for manufacturing quality; porosity, fibre alignment etc.

Although not up to aerospace industry standard that I am familiar with, the internal quality of the rims was very high. The external woven material, although adding to the aesthetic of the rim, also adds to the impact resistance. A woven cloth perform much better at resisting an impact than a uni-directional material.

I rode some of these rims for over two years and they were as good as new when I had to part company to fund my change to fashionable 27.5 wheels. Other than a few minor scratches, they were as good as new. And still very true. Much better than any similar age ally rim.

I have a particular story that summarise their strength. Whilst racing in Grizedale, I hucked a rock garden insufficiently and landed in some big rocks. The bang from the landing was massive and the assembled crowd 'oohed' anticipating a mashed rear wheel. I rode on for a few hundred yards to discover I had pinch flatted the TYRE (I was running tubeless), the rim was still as good as new. Massively strong and impact resistant!

I did some lab testing on stickers. Who ever knew you could remove them with just a razor blade and a careful hand?!

Glad David Arthur got a good build from Superstar, as I was less than impressed about my recent order. I can't say I'd recommend buying from them, let alone a carbon wheelset!

The order from SS didn't go so well from the beginning. It took ages after payment to get a firm delivery date, with them telling me one date, it flying past, then giving another etc. They don't answer their phone, and while they do reply to email, the info was always wrong.

When I finally got the wheels, the first thing I noticed was that the rins were pretty badly scratched front and back (Mavic 423 in 26"). I figured that they would get worse during their lifetime, so no huge deal, but an unimpressive start.

After mounting them up, they were both significantly out of true, not a small bit either, a *lot*, to a point that I was dubious about riding on them... The rear was nearly clipping the frame!

In the end I had to take them to my LBS to be trued and effectively rebuilt. It was about 40euro per wheel to get them into a solid and rideable state!

The free truing for life is kind of worthless too as the cost to ship wheels to them from outside the UK is huge, and after what it took me to get them, in not sure how long it would take to get them back... And when they do come back, if they'd be round or not!!

Since then, the wheels have been fine, but when I count up the cost of the wheels, the extra 80euro to rebuild them etc, I paid more than a pair of Hope Hoops which I'd have much much preferred.

I don't think I'd never buy from SS again.
  • 4 0
Thats a shame. I have got loads of ss stuff and its been great. Had a bearing in a BB go and replaced in no time. Just got some Flow Ex's on Telsa Evos recently and really impressed. I agree the free truing thing is marketing as I would not post them in the UK, thats what a spoke key is for but otherwise its ok. Im currently running a second hand set of Nano Thru pedels I got off ebay and they are faultless.

My Superstar Components AM Carbon Wheelset is working fine and without problems until now and they had to eat a lot of Enduro and Slopestyle Trails, but no DH Tracks: www.pinkbike.com/news/todays-workout-whips-amp-oldschool-tricks-2015.html

Ive had these for a year now, hammered them twice a week down mountains, around trail centers and and about 20 uplift days, and they are definitely bomb proof. Only problem is getting tires off is hard, ive had to cut a couple of schwalbes of !
  • 1 0
Not sure if I had a bad rim, but mashed a rear wheel in three places On my first ride. Only on one side of the rim. Didn't clatter through rocks or hit anything hard. Heard a loud cracking/banging noise after a compression in the trail after a berm and the result was this.

Recently purchased a set of the slightly cheaper versions, only difference is the hubs but priced at £450 it was a no brained! They really are great, but can second comments on tight seating! Ran them initially with tubes and the tyres (Vee Tire "Fluid" and "Flow") where an absolute mare to fit, litterslly had to wrestle them to get them seated, much quicker once converted to tubeless but still tight
  • 4 0
Impressive price for wheels with carbon hoops and CX Rays... let's just hope the hubs and rims aren't junk.
  • 2 1
Iv got theres and LB on hopes. LB are way way better.
When pushing the valve through it snapped a section off the rim! I also struggled getting the rim tape to stick and seal because the centre is deep and square so the tape would have gaps in the corners. getting the tires to sit property took 55PSI and grabbing the tire to pull it onto position. Thought that would make burps impossible but no they burp some how? I also found them overly stiff and had to make alot of suspension changes so take the edge off them. The front hub end cap keeps falling out be because the o ring they use to hold it in position disintegrated. These have been demoted to gf bike /xc duty now as they are light at least. Glad I got them on sale when they where 350 or I'd be really p###ed of.
  • 1 0
Interested to hear what LB rims you guys are running. I'm currently looking at buying some at the moment and was considering the 35mm hookless rims. I just don't like to look of the 38mm rims but want something than can stand uplifts albeit on a 160mm bike. Do there wider rims really make a difference grip wise over a set of Flow EX's for example. Sorry for the highjack
  • 2 0
I descended over 9000m down the Himalayas over some hectic terrain, with a full pack on my back. Had my 35mm LB hookless rims on the bike. Still dead straight. Substantially more grip if you run the pressure right. Beyond me why more people don't buy these things. They're much lighter than a Flow rim, and much wider, and imho much stronger. I know some folk don't like the "harshness", but I've never felt that - just directness.
  • 3 0
There's a forum about lb rims on here. Should be all you need to know on there bud.
  • 1 0
These are strong wheels - I'm a 250lbs 6ft2 rider, who's main love is DH and I don't treat the way I ride my AM bike much different to my DH and I still haven't cracked these rims.

I do need to replace the bearings in the front hub though - but that is the only issue I have had in roughly 1.5/2yrs.
I did get my set for £450 new ^_^ though

  • 4 4
I've been banging on about this wheelset for ages. As many of you know I hate carbon fibre but these are the only ones I would buy. They are priced at what they should be. Unlike ENVE and their 2k bullshit wheels. They have also been independently tested (by Loughborough University I believe, correct me if I'm wrong) and proved to be stronger than its nearest high quality aluminium competitor. I'd buy these.....there I said it!
  • 5 1
I did the testing on behalf of Superstar at Bath University, I am a signatory level Aerospace engineering with significant experience on carbon fibre. For the tests we performed, they were indeed many times stronger than a Stans Flow EX, a quality ally alternative.
  • 1 0
Can you say what other rims you benchmarked them against?
  • 1 0
I compared Supstar AM Carbon, to Stans Flow EX and another brand of carbon rim, who I did not know the manufacturer of.

@phutphutend. Thanks you I had a feeling I had the university wrong my apologies . Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in those tests!
  • 1 1
@phutphutend ... that sounds like a very carefully worded statement Wink I vaguely remember the tests- would you have a link please?
  • 1 0
@phutphutend whats a signatory level engineer? Not questioning your qualifications ive just not heard of that term used much.
  • 1 0
It's a weird term, but basically means Engineer with and accredited degree as far as I am aware. I.e. an academic qualification vs being a boiler "engineer" for example. May be wrong though!
  • 1 0
"I compared Supstar AM Carbon, to Stans Flow EX and another brand of carbon rim, who I did not know the manufacturer of."

The other carbon rim was supposedly a very old out of date design as far as I can tell.

Bit like comparing an apple to an orange to a moldy apple and coming to the conclusion that the apple is most apple like. I'd love to see the PDF to be proved wrong but it seems to have vanished from the interwebz
