Introducing The Eastern States Cup North American Downhill Team

The new kids on the World Cup block are... kids (well, young adults really). In a unique twist, the latest team to throw its hat into the UCI Downhill ring is composed entirely of junior racers. The Eastern States Cup North American Downhill Team is the first all-junior squad to receive full trade team status from the UCI. Nine teens from the U.S. and Canada will be racing for this team at World Cups and ProGRTs across the globe this coming season. The North American Downhill Team is the brainchild of George Ulmer, founder and owner of the popular Eastern States Cup enduro and downhill series. Ulmer is a huge champion of east coast racing and sees this as an important next step for the sport: “I really want to give back and feel this is a good way to do that. I hope to make this a long term venture as it will help the future of junior downhill racing by providing direct access to Junior World Cup events.

bigquotes"Being part of this team is an extreme honor. Having direct access to World Cup races where I can race amongst the best in the world motivates me to work harder and makes me very excited to be able to travel the world." - Andrew Wegiel, pictured in the hot seat at The 2015 Windham Junior World Cup.

The East Coast is fertile ground for developing racing talent. Luminaries such as Neko Mullaly and Richie Rude come to mind. The ESC North American Downhill Team will keep the competitive pipeline loaded with talent and offer a launching pad for the next generation of young racers. Having a clear path to the highest levels of racing is a huge incentive for young racers. A ten-year-old kid and his parents can now dream big and, with some hard work, make that dream come true.

Every Cat 1 boy and girl that raced at least three ESC downhills last season was invited to participate in the team. The nine team members have been drawn from those ranks and offer unlimited potential. They are all podium threats in their category and their times often place them high in the pro ranks as well. Team members will be criss-crossing the globe this coming season and will the team will be attending every World Cup, except Cairns, Australia, and will also be at every ProGRT, the U.S. National Championships and of course all the Vittoria ESC Atlantic and New England DH races.

The team's training grounds will be the acclaimed Thunder Mountain Bike Park at Berkshire East ski resort in western Massachusetts. Team members will train and offer instructional clinics during the summer. Danny's Cycles will provide support at races and a group of parents and industry professionals will guide the team, including George Ulmer, team owner and manager, Sarah Wegiel, Assistant Team Manager, Jeb Wallace-Brodeur, Media Manager and Steve Kahn, technical support and team mechanic.

bigquotes"When I started downhill racing, competing in a World Cup race seemed like a nearly unattainable goal. As I've matured and developed my skills, that goal has started to enter the realm of possibility. This new team will finally allow me to make the dream a reality. I couldn't be more excited!" - Aidan Casner, North American Downhill Team member.

The Eastern States Cup is investing towards the team inscription, a travel fund and other start-up costs. Find out how you can help support the team here.

Great to see this @ Eastern States Cup. These kids can shred and with the structure provided take it to the next level. Something the previous generation had to facilitate themselves through the UCI mystery of WC access. It's awesome to have the redtape out the way! Beast Coast is strong

We invited all the Junior Girls that raced at least 3 ESC races in 2015. (Same as the boys) They all declined unfortunately. We pay women equal to men and prize everything equally. We fund the East Coast Gravity Girls and last year we started a "Women's Pure Beginner Class for a reduced entry. We need and want women racing our gravity events and we are trying our best.

I think it is great that you guys have equal payouts and it's good to have a beginner girls class. I was kidding because I do want to see more females biking but now it seems like I only see dudes out in the trails.

Actually the riding there is pretty baddass! Technical rocky singletrack, , big granite rollers and lots of natural drops. The weather sucks, riding is really fun. Go Team!

why can't there be anything worth a crap on the west coast?
  • 17 5
Because California kind of sucks shit through a straw. Thats why.
  • 3 0
True. San Diego sucks even more, about 45 riders bikes were confiscated for riding on apparent military land. $500 fine and nobody knows when they're getting their bikes back. Constant freeride trail closures and a crappy local MTB association (SDMBA) who only cares about getting attention and not getting anything done.
  • 4 3
Because West Coast dominates and riders ride for factory teams. @JadenBradley

yeah boys! so sick. make the beast coast proud.
  • 2 4
Give cash prizes to the classes that actually spend money there is barely any pros and they win more money then they bring other classes should win money when they bring and spend most the money at races .......would make sense and more people would race ...who want to spend over a hundred to race and u can't even win ur money back if u get first in cat 1 cat 2 cat 3 no money stupid
  • 12 0
I agree. Your grammar teachers should forfeit their wages to fund podium payouts. Clearly they aren't doing their job.
  • 3 0
 Fuck yeah Aidan!
  • 2 0
This is a great step for the Right Coast! Way to go George!
  • 1 0
 Get these kids some sponsors!!!
  • 2 0
They have plenty of sponsors, just not necessary a single title sponsor
  • 10 0
Actually the team has 3 sponsors at this late date and we are thankful for their willingness to jump on board with us.

This team will be funded 100% by the ESC and the racing community. 100% of any proceeds will go directly to team travel.

Awesome! It would be great to see more support for the up and coming riders, especially for such an expensive travel schedule and bikes being as expensive as they are these days. So glad to see that this kind of thing is happening! Question is, having thrown down for the east coast, will someone from the west (or other regions) step up to match your amazing progress.
  • 1 0
This is so awesome, these boys are fast!!!
