We've all been there: It's the rock roll you've done a thousand times before, that one off-camber root section, or maybe it's your first time hitting a brand new drop - you crash. Accidental crashes are part of our sports. EVOC certainly don’t want you to provoke crashes for this competition but they would like to keep you safe on your next adventure by dishing out prizing for the best fail of each month. Here are our picks for October.

Lol I am glad I wasn't the only one confused.

Did these seem especially brutal this time around?
  • 71 1
They look like crashes straight out of the early 2000s when freeride was flourishing.
  • 26 0
Yes, I feel dirty for enjoying them so much
  • 3 0
They probably bragged about sending it before season ends
  • 3 0
To be fair to #4 &#6 landind nose manual is a steep learning curve. #7 was a wreck!
  • 1 0
@sjdeweese: it even happened to me after 5yrs of riding and plenty of nose manies before. It can happen
  • 1 0
@maroni: I was just making a bad joke, I know they're not trying to land nose manual on purpose, no disrespect. I've been bucked a few times myself
  • 1 0
They DO seem brutal, hate all the accidental front-flippage...#EveryoneWantsToRampage?
  • 90 0
Well if you want delivery by Christmas, you gotta send it in October...

#9 'you okay, Dawson?'... 'Yeah - I mean, I have crushed my sternum and my lungs are filling with blood... but yeah, I'm okay'
  • 24 0
And I thought he couldn't have cased it harder than the first time. I was wrong.
  • 59 1
In this week's episode of "Dawson's Creek", Dawson gaps the creek.

@ReformedRoadie: I don't wanna wait for our lives to be overrr..

@ctmtb98 haha yup why not send it if winter is comming! xD
  • 1 0
 That fold was gnarly!
  • 3 0
@ctmtb98: ya right before mtb season gets good around here. gta stay safe all summer so ya can get into the good dirt come oct-april
  • 3 0
@jrocksdh: lol not everyone lives in California
  • 2 0
@ctmtb98: sure as hell seems like it with all the poeple here!
  • 45 0
Best fail of the month I've seen! Lot's of people eating it this month. Also, what was that guy in #7 thinking? Was that an attempted front flip?
  • 13 0
The guy is the best local rider that I know of. I've no clue what happened... and neither does he. He doesn't remember it. Don't mess with concussions
  • 3 0
@swamper1: very surprised concussion was all he ended up with...
  • 2 0
This one has me seriously confused. They were travelling the same speed, but the second guy absolutely soars. He clears that landing by a mile.
  • 1 0
@coney: It wasn't. Broken wrist/arm and there was fear of brain bleeding so ct scan was in order
  • 1 0
@swamper1: holy shit hope the dude is alright...so many people eating it this month!
  • 30 0
These are all "winners" in my mind hollyyyy cow batman
  • 25 0
I heard that the guy in #6 crashed so hard he woke up with an Austrian accent.
  • 3 0
That was a gnarly crash that looked so graceful. Holy **** !
  • 30 9
Wow, so brutal this month! I would kill that guy in #1 for landing on the other dude's back. I mean c'mon now, yelling "heads up" when you're about to land on the guys back isn't going to do jack! AND he could see him the whole time and could have aborted the jump...what an @$$hole.
  • 15 2
I say that if he wins, he donates the backpack to the guy whose back he totalled...
  • 5 4
totally agree. a$$h0le of the year. had plenty of time to stop. unless it was always part of their plan for him to end up inside the rear of his friend...
  • 7 0
@slimboyjim: believe me, promised the pack to him as soon as it was uploaded.
  • 13 0
"Oh my god dude, I thought you were going straight and now I'm about to come in for a high speed bear hug. Brace for impact" was too long to yell given the circumstances haha. But in the end, yeah I'm an a*shole for sure. No one died, and we're still friends. A-line has right of way anyways....
  • 12 0
The non-jumper made a hard right onto the jump line one second ahead and the jumper clearly didn't have time to go anywhere else. This should be the winner for sure because it's a one in a million accident.
  • 16 0
 "what an @$$hole."

And the guy who turned onto the jump landing area without looking to see if anyone was jumping, ISN'T?
  • 3 0
@ahhoo94: Glad your buddy is OK!
  • 17 0
can someone with more ideas about jumping technique than me explain why everybody was so nose heavy, thus leading to all these crashes. what went wrong? and what should they have done. not leaning back far enough? im just getting into jumping my bike and dont wanna end up on fails of the month. although that backpack is tempting.
  • 1 0
If you come into the jump lightly forward on the bike, then after pumping on the jump face return to neutral position in the air, you will keep the nose up.
  • 1 0
 *slight (not lightly)
  • 8 0
I'm crap at jumping, so you may want to ignore this, but having a high rebound on the back of your bike can also cause issues with noise dives?

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong...
  • 1 0
 BUCKAROO!!!!
  • 2 2
Watch 7 closely, pausing it a few times as he leaves the lip. He basically pushes his front end down as he goes off the jump, and gets completely bucked. Either he knows he's carrying too much speed and tried to squash the jump, or he isn't confident in his ability. Either way, if you're trying to squash a jump, it's a whole body action, not just a case of pushing your arms down.
  • 4 0
@slimboyjim: get to a BMX track an spend a day jus dicking about an having fun. A BMX track will have jumps of all shapes an sizes, big doubs an rather sections. All pretty safe to learn on
Then when you confident you take those learned skills to the trails
  • 1 0
@nojzilla: Cheers - good plan. I keep thinking I should get myself down to Perry Barr (Birmingham) and just never get round to it... You've motivated me!
  • 3 0
I found that learning proper bunny hop technique was invaluable in learning how to jump because of the front/rear weight transfer skill needed.
  • 2 0
@nojzilla: Not that safe.. got knocked out cold doing exactly that at the local bmx track! Thing is when you bail a jump on a mtb, theres usually flat ground or space to roll away from the impact. Even when its downhill, it allows you to roll with the crash. At a bmx track, theres usually a upslope right there and no way to roll out of a crash
  • 5 0
I think it helps to practice Bunnyhops.
  • 1 0
@harriieee: to me, it looks like he also hit the brake/s. Kinetic force of a wheel at that speed could turn a bike pretty much when stopped. Based on my experience, when I launched from a jump leaning too far back, I was saving myself by hitting the brakes mid air Big Grin
  • 11 0
NO ! "not leaning back far enough" is NOT the trick. Leaning back is probably what cause the problem in the first place. As a general rule, stay centered push on the face of the jump and release at the lip, timing is crucial, you must be relaxed yet active. Don't jump if you don't believe you can make it (peer pressure), start small and work you way up. Don't hit a jump at Mach5 with straight legs with your weight back completely passive ( like #2) or you'll probably end up in the fail of the month too. Disclaimer: I am not an expert at jumping, these observation are based on my own experiences.
  • 1 0
Looks to me like there were a few problems going on. Bad suspension set up and being too stiff when your heading off the jump. Being too stiff compounds the bad suspension set up because you don't absorb the lip at all, then your bike does and the rebound bounces/rotates you.
  • 1 0
@thejake: or like in the case of #6, the lip of the jump was soaked, sending me OTB simply because I couldn't get any pop out of the jump, making me immediately the passenger of my ride
  • 1 0
@slimboyjim: Noise dive? What, that's like when you start going over the bars mid air and you start screaming - at full, uncontrolled pitch - 'shit, shit, shit, shit, aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh, OOMPH!'
  • 1 0
I think that often these people are going too big too soon. Pros seem to be able to ditch the bike in similar situations. I sometimes get bucked when jumping and it feels like my back wheel gets hung up on the lip due to leveling out too soon. It woud be good to get an answer from an experienced dirt jumper/free rider.
  • 1 0
@harriieee: was trying to figure out also what went wrong...
  • 1 1
@SolarLonsky: in my case (#6), can't really ditch the bike when you're clipped in ....
  • 18 0
Everyone's landing nose heavy this month must be those allergies.
  • 7 0
#1 what sort of track design is this? was the 'victim' supposed to go straight?
#2 glad he got up to check his bike was okay
#3 maan i need to hit berms harder! and that second camera angle was great!
#4 that nose manny lasted quite long considering the position
#5 ahh my eyes
#6 damn that bounce
#7 they were going similar speeds and he dies O_O
#8 cool bar stickers and nice shortsSmile
#9 that's a big ass gap
#10 wait what was the date?
  • 7 0
 #1 Short answer: yes
  • 11 4
I like how majority of these videos are from the USA where they don't have full health care. A lot of those crashes looked gnarly and I can't even image what one would have to pay to fix yourself should you wreck yourself Eek
  • 6 0
President Obama here...I...uh....we do have health care for everyone.
  • 9 11
We don't have full health care? It's called working, taking personal responsibility and paying your own way. I pay 100 a month for a gold plan through my company and I have a 1000 deductible. So worse case I pay 1000 if something big happens. And I don't have to rely on the government to take care of me.
  • 9 8
 @roedty:
Nobody cares, OK?
  • 9 9
@KeithReeder: I didn't know you spoke for everyone here on pb. I'll check with you next time before I post a comment.
  • 6 1
I can imagine the interaction on #9. Even after the first dude cased the shit out of it the 2nd guy went for it, and also cased it hard! That's commitment right there. @BikeGeek11
  • 9 0
Ya dude it actually was in opposite order of the video after he went i was like this is probably the only time i will be able to try it this year so fuck it and i went for it
  • 9 0
 #9 - dawson's creek

  • 3 0
He has a badly broken arm and a concussion. He got a helicopter ride
  • 1 0
 @swamper1: what trail is that?
  • 1 0
 @sjdeweese: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Wasn't with him. It's in Santa Cruz
  • 5 0
they're ALL so gnarly! #3 or #7 if i had to pick
  • 4 0
Awesome videos this month but gotta go with the pure hurt of #7. That's practically my worst nightmare.
  • 1 0
Man, the 7th was amazing. Absolutely calm, flows on the trail... He even didn't try to get off his bike as I can see it in the video. Danny macaskill did a trick when hi rolled on his back.... this man wanted to bring it to a higher level... he is landing on his back! Perfect try... Big Grin
  • 1 0
#7 and #10. How to you make sure that doesn't happen to you? I understand they didn't complete the suspensions LOAD/UNLOAD procedure right before their front wheel left the lip. It may sound pretty obvious to some people here, but I am still learning a lot about jumps (not a crash until now), so any time I have the chance to discuss jump techniques, I take the opportunity!
  • 3 0
How is every one of these 1000x worse than my crash & yet I'm not walking for 3 months? @krismag117 Frown
  • 4 1
#10 needs some wwe graphics inserted immediately. That one takes the cake for me!
  • 2 0
those were all epic...#7 could have almost gone for a full front flip if he had persevered. I really enjoyed #3 though...there was some great mid air flight there
  • 4 1
#6 is my favorite, bit the gnarliest has to be # 7, 10, 11
  • 2 3
 Favorite is all that counts
  • 3 0
 I can't imagine how much #7 hurt
  • 4 0
Badly broken arm and a concussion. I believe there was also fear of spine damage but he's all good. Got a helicopter flight out of it though.
  • 2 0
in all fairness he said 'heads up'... a milisecond before rolling him over, but heads up none the less
  • 3 0
October 2016 is a great vintage Smile
  • 2 0
Loved the way #6 is going so fast he skips like a stone on water and then somehow ends up on his feet!
  • 4 0
 #6 Hold my caulk!!!
  • 1 0
There should be two different competitions simultaneously each month: fail of the month and case of the month.

Although I guess a case like that is a pretty epic fail.
  • 2 0
Should also give props to them though because that would have been a sick gap had it worked out.
  • 2 0
and the nose-heaviest of the month!
  • 1 0
@pinkbike567: nuck if you buck. Slow dat rebound down boys
  • 3 1
Wtf were the trail designers thinking in #1? Criss-cross lines at a park is retarded.
  • 2 0
Number 7 made me cringe. Sometimes fails are funny, but that one just looked downright bad.
  • 3 0

It seems the receiver is too high. Certainly at the speeds he was going, but a faster speed might just over shoot it.
