So I’m finally back out on the bike, with a mix of full-time work, weekly physio and learning to ride one handed is pretty difficult… oh, and getting out and doing the Eyesdown Films with Alex keeps me busy. It’s not a bad way to live, still fully involved in the mountain bike industry and enjoying it.

Expect an update on Tom s injury soon.

Life is hard at times, but I knew that was going to be the case when the doc told me I have a very slim chance of getting the use of my right arm back. One thing I’ve learnt over the past nine months is that everything is still doable; I’ve modified my mountain bike and road bike so I can access all the controls and, being the secret geek that I am, I have also purchased a modified Xbox controller from a guy in the states called Ben Heck, it feels so good to be able to virtually scrub!

Patience is key - everything takes that little bit longer but I’m learning little techniques to get things done every day, I even had chance to do a bit of service work at Mojo before Christmas, which was really nice. I have a busy year planned ahead travelling to the European World Cups as well as all of the British Downhill Series races filming, which should keep me amused and I get to see what it's like as a spectator for the first time in my life.

As you can see in the video, the stuff I’m riding isn’t massively technical but it's where I spent a lot of my time as youngster, I remember a good friend of mine Paul Jones telling me: 'You can never practise cornering too much!" So it's back to bike school for me and hitting plenty of turns.

I would like to say a huge thank you to Mojo Suspension for supporting me and setting my bike up so well, I seriously wouldn’t have half the things I do if it wasn’t for they’re kindness and generosity.

Alex and I plan on getting out in the next couple of months to bring some more riding footage and give you a little insight in to how my life has changed .

Always look forward, never look back.

Respect to you man! A few years back I got caught out by the rock section on Schleyer before the bridge drop. Went over the bars and had to stop and catch my breath. This guy with one arm came flowing through the same section, fast and smooth and I got some inspiration for the rest of the day!

He should have given us at scotbycycles in Carlisle a shout we have a good friend and customer who only has 1 arm and 1 leg and we sort his top end xc race bikes out with a fair bit of experience our mechanics have been doing single sided shifting and braking for a good few years with front and rear brake balancing so no accidental over the bars problems to date!!!

how do you pedal with one leg, is there a counterweight or is it just using clipped in pedals?

TOM!!! You have massive heart, and I salute you for not letting this keep you down! I had a pretty serious injury, with chronic pain and disability for months, so I understand what pain with no relief is like. I refused to live on narcotics too, I'm not a fan of zombie state living, I preferred the pain. Thankfully I was able to fully recover over about a year, but I have some understanding for the challenges and frustration you face. People who have never had chronic injury/pain that you have to live with every day with no relief just don't understand. They try, and want to help to be sure, but words can't explain it. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to seeing more riding videos from you. Positive thoughts, hard work, and things WILL improve. Cheers man!! -Johnny

Well done for not giving up and your already impresive results. I have suffered (and still do) from various injuries myself, so I know what it takes.
Just a thought about your "unstable" steering, I know a guy who happen to be a WC mechanic and he showed me once some adapters he made to ad weigth on the outside of the bars to make them feel more stable (the idea being, keeping "narrow" handlebars for tight tracks but with the stable feeling of wide ones), maybe adding one of those on the right hand side of your bars could help?
PM if you need more info or contact with that guy.

Riding one handed , clipped in . You are dedicated. I just hope somewhere in the future when medicine and surgery progresses you can ride normal again. Good luck.

What did he do to his arm? He's my new hero. My uncle has a friend who got hit by his grandpa driving a wheat harvester when he was real young. He rides dirt bikes and quads real good. Can out wheelie any one. Just takes time don't give up the fight man
