Red Bull Rampage - Who Will Win The FMB Overall?

Sep 26, 2013 at 6:32
by FMB World Tour
For the last three years, as an official partner of the FMB World Tour, the hydration specialist CamelBak has presented the FMB World Tour Champion with a golden CamelBak Eddy bottle. The gold plated Eddy bottle, with a gold crusted FMB World Tour icon set in hand sculpted rock will be presented to the 2013 Champion after the finals at Red Bull Rampage on October 13th. Furthermore, as the riders risk even more to take our sport to higher levels with outstanding progression, the rewards must also increase, which is why the overall FMB World Tour prize purse has increased to 30,000 Euro. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the contenders of this final competition.

photo

Brandon Semenuk has dominated the top spot on the FMB World Tour for the last two years, winning consecutive titles in 2011 and 2012. But this year, the road to victory was wide open and the title was anyone’s for the taking. As the season progressed we saw the top contenders make their way up the ranking. Martin Soderstrom (current rank 2nd) was on a roll, showing an unprecedented form but while trying to secure glory at Red Bull Joyride, he took a heavy crash that has ended his FMB World Tour season. With one event left, Sam Pilgrim has emerged as the favourite for title. But does he have things all sealed up? Not necessarily.

Sam Pilgrim: Current rank 1st.
Sam started his season the way he intends to end it – on top of the podium. Overall, Sam has lead the overall ranking longer than any other athlete this season – saying that, he has had to battle ferociously to stay on top. Sam undoubtedly has the skill to take his first ever FMB World Tour Championship title. Some might say, luck has played in his favour with Brett Rheeder and Martin Soderstrom out of the saddle but rest assured, Sam’s competitive nature would much rather see a fierce battle to the end than an easy road due to injuries. Sam will enter the battleground of Red Bull Rampage the clear favourite for the title – but one rider can still deprive him of glory.

Brett Rheeder: Current rank 3rd.
Brett has followed the FMB World Tour religiously this season – always the first on course, practicing and clocking more runs than any other rider, Brett’s goal is obvious – become the FMB World Tour 2013 Champion. It was all going according to plan: he took the lead of the overall ranking after a spectacular win at the first ever X Games Mountain Bike Slopestyle event in Munich and was determined to stay there. Sadly, Brett’s championship crusade was short lived due to a back injury sustained during the following Gold event, Crankworx Les 2 Alpes. However, after resting and undergoing professional rehabilitation Brett has a good chance of being cleared to ride at Red Bull Rampage. His participation is still uncertain due to the extreme nature of the event – but this is how the 2013 championship battle looks like:

photo

Thomas Genon: Current rank 4th.
This was the first year for young Thomas after his major breakthrough last season, when he won Red Bull Joyride at Crankworx Whistler. Along with stardom also comes a mountain of tangible pressure and despite a successful year, it is clear that the Belgian rider wants more. Thomas won’t get his hands on the golden CamelBak Eddy bottle in 2013, but has the potential to finish second overall if he lands a solid third place result at Red Bull Rampage.

Yannick Granieri: Current rank 5th.
This is a comeback year for Yannick after a serious knee injury in 2012. Feeling stronger than ever, Yannick is safely seated in the top 5 in the FMB World Tour overall ranking. We all know that on a slopestyle course, Yannick poses a serious threat and if he can convince the judges of his big mountain skills enough to finish second at Red Bull Rampage, then he too is a contender for an overall podium finish.

Anton Thelander: Current rank 6th.
It may seem a bit far-fetched, but this young shredder has done nothing but astound us all season. Known throughout the industry as “Cleanlander” – Anton reached new heights this season becoming the first ever Red Bull Phenom Champion during X Games Munich. He has achieved numerous podium results at some of the top FMB World Tour events, and also won the Red Bull Joyride “Young Gun” award – do not be surprised if Anton lands another impressive result at Red Bull Rampage. If he manages to over come the fear of riding the ruthless Utah desert terrain then Anton might just make it onto the FMB World Tour 2013 podium.

Routing for the Brit, go on pilgrim
  • 92 2
My question is how would Brett rheeder come better than 1st?
  • 33 3
The FMBA just announced a "0" position... Very hard to achieve, but I mean, Brett might be able to reach it.
  • 11 1
This sparks another question, does "0" mean the best or worst. And if you were the "0" position where do you stand on the podium??
  • 27 0
if you have reached such a high level of awesomeness to come in 0th position means that you should have the ability to float above the podium Big Grin
  • 17 0
 Front bar the oakley sender.
  • 7 0
If he scores 100.1 or more!
  • 3 5
@jan99: hahaha, you beat me to it Razz I was gonna ask: would that then mean you're 0th? you also wouldn't stand any where, you would fly Big Grin !
  • 2 0
brett isnt taking part in rampage.....
  • 12 5
Am i the only one who thinks semenuk will take the rampage win?
  • 3 1
I think we should all ask ridethree, he just got a zero. He has experience on how to get there.
  • 1 4
 Rheeder's going on a Pilgrimage!
  • 5 1
Rheeder is injured so i dont think he will be riding at this event.
  • 2 0
Then why would they say all these things about Rheeder then?
  • 1 3
Rheeder as long as he isn't injured. I've never really seen Pilgrim ride anything but a hardtail and a trail bike.
  • 6 0
HOT NEWS : Rheeder just announced via his twitter that he will not ride at Rampage this year that makes Pilgrim officially won FMBWT 2013
  • 1 0
Indeed, he broke his back at les alpes i think.
  • 40 2
Seems like this is really more of a Slopestyle Mountain Bike World Tour than a Freeride Mountain Bike World Tour when it's all dirt jumpers in the top spots. The tour really needs more big-mountain events or to just make a new series for big mountain dudes who can rip at Rampage but struggle to stay competitive with the dirt jumpers in the Slope events during the rest of the season.
  • 16 1
I was thinking the same. Specially now zink and the claw have taken a backseat on the slope circuit. More big mountain events then let the riders decide if they would rather split the tour. Call me heathen but I'd like speed and style and points based air dh become part of the tour too.
  • 4 1
yeah they really need chatel mtn style next year and create a new freeride event in green river or wherever to have 2 gold big mountain events. this fmb world tour not ssmb world tour
  • 10 1
You are 100% right. This is a true freeride event. There is almost no way Sam gets in the top 10 at Rampage.
  • 9 1
Or they could change the "F" in FMB to Freestyle...
  • 2 1
Agreed. Now that Pilgrim has wrapped up the overall, I'm willing to bet he doesn't show to Rampage...and even if he does, the dude will take the puss line down and still get a 90 from the judges.
  • 30 1
what does a camelbak water bottle have to do with freeride mountain biking?
  • 10 0
Yeah, I thought that bottle looked tacky on there too. Yeah, they promoted the FMB and they make water bottles. But for an Overall Season Winning award that people risked life and limb for? Surely they could have done better than a plastic water bottle as a tropyh, gold plated or not.

We'll forgive the marketing folks this time.. but perhaps they can produce something a little more noble next year. I'm not talking about something like the America's Cup, but a step or two in that direction would be nice...
  • 1 1
ya, they could at least change their name to Bike-back!
  • 1 0
 nothing
  • 16 1
Queue the insane amount of transatlantic distaste at the mention of Sam Pilgrim competing in a big mountain event. Expect swathes of highly knowledgeable 14 years olds who can out-ride even the Semenuks of this world, using phrases such as 'Wonder if he'll quit cos it's too windy' and 'X-games bow out'. I personally hope Pilgrim rocks up and destroys it just so I can watch their wee fingers explode.
  • 3 0
 could not agree more dude!
  • 1 4
'Wonder if he'll quit cos it's too windy' I'm 14

Brett has got to win this shit! DESERVES IT

I'd like to see you do what Pilgrim does, I can see you really shredding here...

Pigram will get last place bud he's a dirt jumper not a mountain rider rheeder on the other hand rides both! Team rheeder for the win!

hey Coops2011, silly boy. Are im a f*ckin Pro???
  • 2 1
Hahahaha! Yo coops2011, you're hating on some dude for supporting Rheeder, yet you have a picture of him on your homepage... C'mon man. Pilgrim can't ride natural Utah terrain anyway... I truly hope he gets exposed
  • 1 1
Hey Keystone! Ur ma man!! I dont say anything against pilgrim. But Rheeder is more the Big Bike guy!!
  • 12 0
Congrats, you're the best Freerider in the world, you win a water bottle!
  • 4 0
 worst trophy in sports.
  • 2 0
Have you seen The Ashes trophy? It is literally the smallest cup possible.
  • 2 0
I have seen the ashes (I like cricket) and it still kicks the shit out of this "so called" award.
  • 5 0
Most of the dh racers in attendance are red bull athletes and are only there for sponsorship duties, I'm doubtful we will see our new world champ risking injury at rampage . I'm in agreement that most of the events are just geared towards dirt jumpers, I think rampage should go back to a stand alone event and be seperate of the fmb. I love rampage always have , awesome.event to show case how far you can push it on a bike
  • 2 0
 agreed.
  • 10 2
Would be awesome if Brett could take the overall!
  • 6 0
As much as I would like to see Sam win, for some reason I couldn't imagine him being a big mountain kind of guy. More Of a dirt jumps man to me!
  • 2 1
It will be interesting to see what he does with the Rampage course. I doubt he will be hitting the biggest lines on the mountain but I am sure he will be doing something unexpected.
  • 2 0
We'll see on the day! Can't wait!!
  • 1 1
Nothing against pilgrim he does some serious business but its kind of sad the fmb guys let a dirtjump man win a FREERIDE mtb worldtour. Would be really down to see some more freeride/big mountain contests like chatel and rampage in the coming years of the fmb
  • 1 0
I never said he's not a free rider, I said big mountain. Get your facts right! Wink
  • 2 1
dirt jumping is a discipline of FREERIDE though buddy, yeah they re lacking in big mountain events everyone needs to stop hate to the dirt and slope riders and just accept thats the way it is...
  • 1 0
I said I couldn't imagine him being as good a big mountain rider as he is a dirt jumper.
  • 1 1
You guys got me a little wrong. I love dirtjumping and slopestyle i think it's the best part of mtb but freeriding is just so much more than that
  • 6 4
I don't think pilgrim will win this or come close, he doesn't ride any kind of big mountain stuff, plus Steve Smith is going to probably be in the finals, as well as a bunch of other riders who spend a lot of time on a DH bike. If Rheeder can get 3rd he's got the overall win. which would be awesome to have Canadians dominating both the UCI and the FMB!
  • 1 0
Rheeder isn't fully recovered so he can't ride Frown
  • 4 0
I was really cheering for Martin all season but after his injury at crankworx I guess I'll just have to cheer on the next best swedish rider Anton Cleanlander!
  • 3 0
I think Sam might have the edge this year to take the overall win, and if you win well I can't see you needing to go on take me out!
  • 1 0
this is gonna be interesting. my bets are still on pilgrim. Would be so cool to see brett win though with being out for almost all of the major events and then getting the overall. But in my opinion this was not a "real" worldtour because all the biggest contenders like semenuk, rheeder, zink and soderstrom were out of the game for the title
  • 3 0
So is that a fully functional gold plated water bottle? AND if it is functional... would you really want to drink out of it?
  • 4 0
"1st or better"? What's better than first?
  • 4 0
 That is a great question.
  • 3 0
I thought something like... becoming president or whatever
  • 7 0
 Apparently it's bacon
  • 4 0
 "1st or better"? What's better than 1st?

 Thats not funny anymore mate...
  • 7 1
everyone knows we love bacon. some stereotypes are true.
  • 4 1
So basically if Rheeder takes bacon Pilgrim won't probably win a water bottle. Seems legit.
  • 1 1
 ahaha @kanioni, best comment ever
  • 3 0
I think Sam has it locked down but would love to see Brett throw down a killer run.
  • 3 0
YEEAHH RHEEEDER!! Best of prayers going out to this guy. Would love to see him come and shred Rampage, carefully!

 It'll be insaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane!

i like both riders, and i know both come from a street background, it will be close.
  • 1 0
Congratulations Sam Pilgrim! Hes our FMB world tour champion 2013!! Rheeder aint gonna compete since hes back arent fully healed..
  • 4 1
why is semenuk not on the FMB rankings?
  • 4 8
flag frenchbiker2 (Sep 26, 2013 at 9:45) (Below Threshold)
because he did just 2 or 3 events this year, so he is in the FMB rankings but not on the top!
  • 11 0
He chose not to take part in the FMB overall this season so that he could concentrate on the filming of his other projects such as Life Behind Bars and the upcoming NWD film.
  • 6 0
@frenchbiker2 Thats not true. Go check the FMB site. He is not listed on the Rankings anywhere or on the list of FMB riders for this season.
  • 3 0
He cut his events down this season so he could do other things like work on his movie and his backyard.
  • 1 0
Actually he thinks the fmb sucks so he isn't listed on their site anymore.
  • 1 0
yeah I know he wants to do more filming but i didn't know he wasn't listed on the rankings... I was watching all the events just for him, he is the best... but Im happy to see all the life behind bars. Do you know if he is gonna do the Rampage???
  • 1 0
as far as i know he will ride rampage. And propably win it too, but thats just my opinion
  • 1 0
im gonna go for zink Wink
  • 5 3
Pilgrim to destroy utah desert. nuff said
  • 2 0
It's clear these guy's aren't doing it for the trophy.
  • 4 1
 go brandon!!!!!!
  • 4 4
Luckily for Rheeder Pilgrim is absolutely tragic at riding a big bike, he'd be better off paying someone to ride rampage for him..
  • 2 0
Wait, who is in 2nd??? o_0
  • 1 0
Soderstrom but he's injured and can't compete at Rampage so he's not in contention for the FMB win
  • 1 0
wonder what place brandon would be in if he did the fmb
  • 1 0
Maybe the double backflip will win the Rampage.
  • 2 0
 What a stupid trophy
  • 1 0
haha to bad Pilgrim just win the title
  • 1 1
Leave Rampage as its own event for the true Mountain Bikers not part of FMB.
  • 1 0
FMB- FREERIDE mountain biking, not just the dirt jumping world tour. In my opinion they should have more events like rampage in the FMB WT.
  • 3 6
Reckon Semenuk will put down a killer run that should place him first but due to FMB politics he wont get the scores and Rheeder will win with a good run but not a winning run because he follows the tour...
  • 4 0
Semenuk has killed the comps this year, but he can't get awarded FMB points because he's not licensed/registered with them. Makes the overall title a bit silly IMHO.
  • 4 6
Rheeder! Im always game for the underdog
  • 4 5
 Samenuk should win it xD
