After a full season of FMB Diamond Series stops, the grand finale went down last Monday, on the red sands of Utah at Red Bull Rampage. The Spaniard Andreu Lacondeguy can call himself the new Red Bull Rampage champion. But it was also a battle between Trek C3 Project team riders, Brandon Semenuk and Brett Rheeder for the FMB World Tour overall title. In the end Brandon Semenuk took his third title after 2011 and 2012. For Trek, Semenuk’s third and Rheeder’s fifth place was a double win. The performance of their all-star team has also rewarded them with the first ever FMB Factory Team title.

Canadian triathlon and the final battle at Rampage-
The all new FMB Diamond Series was a huge success. Riders went bigger than ever and with 5 of the biggest contests to focus on, they had time to get their gnarliest tricks dialed and send it to the next level.

Heading to the final round, Brandon Semenuk was in the lead and only Brett Rheeder could have stopped him. Both athletes had a less than desirable start at Crankworx Les 2 Alpes. The young Canadian, Anthony Messere took the win at round 1 and led the standings. From there, it was a battle of inches to get onto the podium and move into the top spot. Semenuk pulled back the lead of the FMB Diamond Series standings after round 4, Red Bull District Ride. Separated by Messere, Rheeder was sitting in third heading to Red Bull Rampage. Deciding not to ride, Messere bowed out of the battle for the title, which meant this big mountain event, was Rheeder’s last hope of taking the title. The task was monumental.

The two Canadians both showed a great performance packed with backflips, 360 opposites and an impressive combination of big mountain and slopestyle riding. The judges scored Semenuk’s second run higher than Rheeder’s, who ranked third after run 1. But due to perfect execution and his smooth and polished riding style, Semenuk finished 3rd place (89.25 points) before Kyle Strait (89.00) and Rheeder (88.50), enough for taking the title once again, back home to Squamish, Canada.

bigquotesI was in a pretty good spot for the overall [coming into Rampage] It wasn't really a goal of mine in the year, I just wanted to have some good events and it just happened to work out as a bonus. Obviously it's sweet to take the overall at the end of the year. - Brandon Semenuk

But there were 2 athletes pulling even more incredible performances out of their bags: rank 2 went to US-rider Cam Zink (89.50) who also got awarded with the best trick trophy and an extra 5.000 Dollars for his massive and perfectly landed 360 off the huge mammoth drop. But the man of the day was Andreu Lacondeguy. After an absolute convincing first run, judges gave him 95.25 points, more than 5 points ahead of second ranked Zink. Trick wise it wasn’t even the most impressive run of the day, some whips, a backflip. But it was his flow, his style, his smoothness, his speed and the gigantic amplitude of his jumps that made the difference that day. At the end there was no discussion, that the first Spanish Red Bull Rampage champion without a doubt deserved the victory. Congratulations to the big mountain lover from Barcelona!

FMB Factory Team Ranking
For 2014, the FMBA introduced the all-new FMB Factory Team ranking. Just like the FMB Diamond Series, the title was anyone’s for the taking. Canyon Factory Freeride Team led the standings right out of the gate with solid victories and podiums by Thomas Genon, supported by Anton Thelander and Peter Henke. Mid-way through the season, the tables started to turn. Enter, the Specialized team. Martin Soderstrom returned to the saddle and the ripping rookie, Nicholi Rogatkin, was on fire! Specialized moved into first after the Colorado Freeride Festival with both riders standing on the podium. Sadly, Martin Soderstrom’s reoccurring injury cut his season short. With both Canyon and Specialized weakened due to rider injuries – Trek C3 Project was unstoppable! Team riders, Semenuk, Rheeder, Cam McCaul and Tom Van Steenbergen began stacking up the points at the Diamond events and dominated the rest of the tour. After Anthony Messere’s big scores at the Diamond events and Mitch Chubey’s top ten result from Red Bull Rampage, the Morpheus team was also in for the team award battle and in the end finished in second place. With Cam Zink’s Red Bull Rampage points and some good results in the recent Diamond events from Yannick Granieri, the YT Industries F***ing Good Times team shares third place and ended up tied with the Canyon Factory Freeride Team. final points came in at came in a Red Bull Rampage and the Trek C3 Project team was officially announced the 2014 Factory Team Champions. For the full FMB Factory Team results, click here.

Here is the Top 5 ranking of the FMB Factory Team Ranking:
1. Trek C3 Project (5700 points)
2. Morpheus (3398 points)
3. YT Industries F***ing Good Times (3334 points)
3. Canyon Factory Freeride Team (3334 points)
4. Specialized (3196 points)
5. Diamondback (2548 points)

YT are on point with their team name. Hats off to Semenuk, complete class act.

i'd like to see FMBWT grand prix series format with at least 10 event/year..

Rampage should be part of the Fest Series, not the FMB.
  • 4 3
Be nice if Semenuk smiled at his 3rd place in rampage
  • 3 1
It would also be nice if he didn't get ignored
  • 6 1
Was waiting for someone to suggest that rampage goes to the fest series. Could certainly be a possibility in the future, but to this point the fest fellows have very little experience putting on an event even near this size/exposure. To date their events have been limited in scope, with only their friends and key invites attending, and a dozen or so spectators. I don't argue that rampage may suit the fest style of riders better than the fmb, but they'd have to get past the cronyism and be willing to have others participate/contribute/help out.

In an interview lacondeguy said' he wanted the fmb to stay away from fest , because if a bunch of randoms would show up the vibe would change dramatically'. There is no reason rampage should be part of fest. Fest is fun for the bunch of friends having fun, whereas at rampage it's riders freaking out with nerves and forgetting why they started riding in the first place. Andreu was so stressed out he didn't even want to do another run. Anthything which involves riders stealing lines, lines which you don't want to ride and clueless judges just need to stay the fuck away from the fest series.

Agreed - they are totally different, and shouldn't necessarily overlap. Funny thing is, despite him saying this, the fest guys intentionally tried to shift the attention from fmb at rampage to themselves, to the point of even calling it an "infestation". Overtly busting out t-shirts, flags, and chants of "fest" at the podium and after runs certainly isn't "staying away from the fmb" (or vice versa). I enjoy what they are doing, by virtue of their talent and vision, but the overall attitude and adversarial approach to criticizing the fmb and other events does absolutely nothing for me.

Wow, Morpheus is the second team ad their main man collecting points is messere. He has done pretty darn well to keep up with the c3 team with semenuk, rheeder, mccaul etc. Been a pretty rad year for both dh where we see the rise of the rat and the return of Sam Hill and in freeride with messeres first big win and rheeder and semenuk pushin eachother so hard. Thanks to Redbull and the UCI. They get a lot of negative press but they put on amazing shows...for free!!

Brandon Semenuk is the FMB Overall Champion...and he is pretty indifferent about it.
  • 7 8
Yeah like "I'm really happy Frown "

Ive said it before and ill say it again. Not everyone is going to jump around like a goofball. Let him be himself.
  • 4 0
its not about the title, hes just riding to ride and push/better himself and the sport.
Right on Sem (Y) Nice seeing your shred this year

What I like about Semenuk is that he's just one of the most humble, and respectful guys out there. He knows how to celebrate a win without looking like he just won the freaking lottery or something. It's one of my life goals (or frankly everybody's life goals) just to meet the guy in person.
  • 4 0
That's part of the reason I love this guy, he doesn't have to sell himself & hype himself & wave his hands for everyone's attention like someone like Zink does. Semenuk's riding does the talking, it does the screaming, it does the hand waving & that's why he's the People's Choice. That's why he's the best & everyone knows it, with Rheeder bringin' the heat close behind having the same attitude & the same level of discipline.

 Well deserved win. Congrats Semenuk!

I always respect Semenuk. The guy is everything I aspire to be

 Canadian? Smile
  • 3 0
Well they do have free health care Smile So go ahead backflip, Oppo 360 away. I'd probably be dead if I tried that stuff
  • 3 0
Why do all Americans think we have free health care. I spend thousands every year on health care and that does not sound free to me!!!!
  • 1 1
Bc our liberal media spreads it around as an example how we can have "free" health care too.

 Semenuk smiling - that's a rare shot

What is wrong with people being fans of Semenuk? The dude is amazing. You couldn't even come close to that. None of us can ride his level.

 nice

But the big question is: Does he get the golden drink bottle again???
  • 7 1
Where was Messerre for the rampage ? Cause even Rodgatkin rode !
  • 4 1
Anthony came from a BMX racing background into park bmx's then into the slopestyle game when he realized he could make money doing it. I would bet after last year he realized he was in way over his head up there.
  • 3 0
He hit the Canyon gap you know, backflipped and almost front flipped his Demo with almost no time on it. I was very impressed that he was even there. He's young and cocky but, he's also a go getter.
  • 5 0
I think your talking about different people. Anthony rides morpheus
  • 2 0
The announcers said Brandon would have had to finish 6th and Rheeder 1st for Rheeder to win. Rheeders run was a little down on amplitude and gnar but clean and flowy, Brandon Needed another big drop and a bit more speed up top to win. Zink needed to not blow his tyre and do another big trick on his bottum section.

The third photo is one of my favorite I've seen for the event. It makes the hair on my neck stand up and makes me palms feel sweaty. It does a great job of lending perspective to just how big some of these tricks are.
  • 3 0
bike ninja, always a deserved win.
  • 11 9
The entire FMB and it's overall ranking is completely worthless.
  • 6 1
Really? Cause I'm not sure anyone could make a case that the standings in that competition didn't reflect who is where in Slopestyle riding at the moment. Which would suggest that it has served it's purpose pretty well.

I think presenting the winner (of the FMB overall) at Rampage is a mistake though - Messere wasn't even there (on account of not riding in Rampage I assume) and the presentation certainly took a back seat to Lacondeguy's 1st on the day. I'm not surprised Semenuk was a bit underwhelmed.

It's worth asking the question if Rampage should even count towards the FMB overall. It's certainly big enough to stand on it's own as a one off and quite a few of the riders who excel at slopestyle are clearly unsuited (or unprepared or whatever) to the type of riding demanded by Rampage.

It's a bit like playing Rugby Union all year then playing Rugby League for the Grand Final (which will mean NOTHING to any of you who aren't from Australia, New Zealand or a small part of Northern England).
  • 2 1
Deep, @Frilko. Of course it's not worthless - just ask any slopestyle riders out there. How many people enjoy watching Crankworx and other fmb events? It provides a cohesive slopestyle body to help put on, promote, and regulate these events.
  • 2 1
crankworx started without the FMB, and it would work just as well without it.
  • 3 0
Crankworx was one of the first things that caught my attention when I got back into this a few years ago. Compare the vibe you would get presenting the FMB overall winner at that festival, with it's thousands of spectators and presumably all the top Slopestyle riders in attendance to the 1/3 empty podium we saw at Rampage playing second fiddle to the main event.
  • 1 0
Looks like Rampage was a very good day for YT.
  • 2 0
 Congrats Semenuk
