Recently, I've seen camera drone's become successfully funded via this method. I've seen it happen to projects involving humanities, arts and science. It soon became apparent that crowdfunding was the simple process of telling a group or crowd of people "Hey guys! I want to do something!" and then hoping you can encounter enough people who want you to do it too. So, I found myself asking,"Could a mountain bike facility be crowdfunded?."

That might seem an unusual question for somebody to ask themselves? However, over the course of the past two years, I've dealt with a couple of life questions that are far more 'out there' than that. For example:

1) Is it ok to feel grateful for the brilliant network of Trail Centres that are across the UK. But, at the same time, wish they had a bit more...erm.......gnar?
2) Is it ok to actually listen to and then act upon a thought of, "You can either moan about it Sunshine or get off your ass and do something about it?"
3) Is it ok to leave a secure job, commit to paying rent on 46 acres of woodland for the next 20yrs and tell your Wife "Darling, I've spent our life savings on the legal fees for my woodland. The good news is, I didn't spend all of it on just that, I bought a chainsaw and an mini excavator too!"

This is a trail map of how we hope the completed Bike Park will look.

Pinkbike is without doubt one of my favourite sites on the internet and I feel that coming onto here and asking for money from you guys would be crass and frankly, akin to taking a dump on my own doorstep. So I can honestly tell you that it was a difficult decision to post this blog. However, as you guys are the biggest community of Mountain Bikers in the World,
I would like to ask you to consider sharing this link with like minded people, if you would?

Essentially, I'm just a guy who wants to build a place where my daughters can have their first experience of trails whilst in the same venue, there were tracks to challenge even the most skilled riders. I'd like there to be every progression of trail and feature in-between that way, riders can visit GNAR, enjoy their day and leave feeling that they're a better rider for it.
If you guys would be willing to help spread the word of my mission, then, that could possibly help GNAR Bike Park in ways we can't yet guess.

If there's anything you'd like to know more about or questions you'd like to ask, drop me an email at gnarbikepark@gmail.com and get back to you or visit our Facebook page.

Very best wishes and thank you for your time,

Ben Eggleston

When you're a small business like me (well, there's only me so make that micro business) and you're trying to tell your story to as many people as possible, it's really nice to know that the big guys are still mindful enough to give a helping hand. Thanks very much Pinkbike!

Such great news man , kinda jealous really , it's pretty much my dream to get hold of a nice square of woods and build my own gnar park.

There are some trails out there with features I want to ride , but like Ben says these features are few and far between.

The UK is long over due a ' proper ' bike park with proper big bike jump lines like you watch in the whistler videos , people say the hills are not big enough for that , but what is wrong with 2 minute long mini versions of this ? ( not mini as in feature size )

We have a great tradition of ' making ' excellent natural gnar DH lines with plenty of tracks to choose from which is great , but very little for pure air time , other than black mountain cycle centre I can't think of anywhere that offers that much air time top to bottom.

Thanks very much for the heads up guys. I've asked mods if they could fix it for me? For now, here's the address :

@GNARbikeparkUK you going to organise a trail building crew at some point or doing it all yourself? I don't have a lot of time free but may be able to pop up every so often (living in Lancaster, originally form West Cumbria) and am ticketed and experienced in felling small, medium, large and windblown trees, can climb too but it's not really my bag, experienced excavator (and all sorts of other machinery) operator and general getting hands shit up kinda guy. Let me know if you need a hand. Jamie

Hi Jamie, As soon as the access road and car park are in we'll calling The GNAR Army in. We have a crew of just over 160 volunteers and I'd love to see you there too. Keep an eye on the facebook page for the call to arms!

Hi mate, just been watching this space for a while and wanted to wish you well with it. I travel from Scotland down to Bike Park Wales 3-4 times per year so something closer will be ace. Have you been down there to do some research? Their business model is superb and they won the Welsh Creative Business Award last year.

Are you having any trail building days? I would definitely be up for giving up at least a day.

Or actually got an extra https/ in the URL

I want a tee shirt, but you're 5.30 hours away, there are a lot of places nearer.
The hill looks tinyEek
I like your progressive trail theory, round here its either flat or a 10' gap, no inbetween.
Build the GNAR and we will come, but its gotta be spectacular.

Just my thought - but the trails all going down the same direction on the hill is good for use of space but will it make the most exciting trails? Could some go across the hill to end up being longer, rather than all the trails having a similar feel?
  • 1 0
Were lucky enough to have 46 acres of a diverse area to play with. The design of the tracks will keep things far from similar with plenty of choice and lots of opportunity to improve your skills.

Cool, just in my head it was all the same slope but I'd imagine it isnt! How long tracks are you going to be able to build? Oppurtunity to hold a BDS round?
  • 1 0
Our "Big lines" are going to run at around the 2min mark. Although I'd love to put something like a BDS round on in the future (not completely out of the question as the World Cup at Windham is only 2mins too?), I think it'll be more along the lines of a mini DH race over the two biggest tracks with the times added together to find the fastest rider over both.

Only 48 miles from my house? not bad
  • 2 1
Fantastic idea, will you be having (affordable) camping for people who want to come and spend a few days or more up there?
hope this works out quickly for you mate, cycling needs more people like you Smile
best of luck.
  • 2 0
@Lawman - Unfortunately, my lease agreement doesn't allow for camping (at the moment, might look towards trying to negotiate that in though?). However, I'm based in a part of Cumbria called The Eden District and as such, we have a plethora of guest houses, B&B's etc all at reasonable prices.

What's the total elevation of the hill?
It looks kinda small from that picture.
Could be wrong
  • 3 0
Good on you Squire, I really hope it all works out, you got my donation that's for sure..
  • 2 0
If you build it... They will come! It's about time someone thought of this!
  • 4 1
Keep up the good work ben!

Looking forward to seeing how this develops! Great job so far
  • 4 1
really hope this kicks off to be something as popular as BPW
  • 2 1
This looks awesome, best of luck Ben. There is a pledge coming your way. Keep up the work dude.

Greatbarrock wood, eh? Location revealed at last :-)
  • 1 1
Ai, so no real need for uplift as you could push up in a few minutes save some cash and build a decent footpath to walk back up
  • 4 0
@Mcfc 1987 - We'll have push up tracks too. If people are going to session runs all day though, they'll prefer an uplift.
  • 2 1
sweet, I normally prefer to push at some places (FOD for example) so a push up track is needed
  • 4 0
I agree. Sometimes it's a little more chill to just have a casual push up and a chat with your mates.
  • 2 0
I know this is the wrong attitude but I wish I lived closer!

Good luck Ben, happy to help a little bit. Great to see this on Pinkbikes front page. Hope the total has shot up today Smile

What happens after 20 years is up??
  • 1 0
There's two things that could happen by then. 1) I'll have bought the piece of land by then, therefore no contract to run out or 2) The contract will run out and it'll be returned back to woodland.

 Cool eh @murfio Smile
