Downhill Southeast 2017 - Dates and Locations

by Jay Schultz
It's back! Neko Mulally has been using the off-season to work with his friends and bring back a second season of the Downhill Southeast. So, don't put those long travel bikes away for the winter months because your local tracks are covered in ice crystals, get online and start making your travel plans to head down the southern states of North Carolina and Tennessee. Heck, we'd be willing to bet some of you will be here anyway for the USA Cycling Pro-GRT at Windrock, TN on March 8-12, 2017. Folks who can base themselves in the southeast this spring have the chance to compete in 4 races in 5 weeks within a close geographical region. Doubleheader weekends for the opening round at Bailey and the Windrock Pro GRT as well as the second round at TTC and the final at Windrock are each less than two hours apart. Windrock bike park opens in the week between. With a goal to get riders on the bike pre-season, the opportunity is definitely there!

Downhill Southeast Mission Statement:

Awesome tracks and professionally run events at a time to the year when riders are excited to get on their bikes, and a price we're proud to promote. All for the riders.

"Making these races happen is something that I'm really proud of. We have an awesome thing going in the southeast with year round riding and steep, natural terrain, and these races showcase the best qualities. I started this project as a chance for Luca and I to prepare for our season racing abroad, and it's turned into one of the highlights of the year for me. - Neko Mulally"

What did you miss in the inaugural season of the Downhill Southeast?

• Entry Fees include two days riding access to each of the venues.

"Increasing the women's participation was a priority for us this year. With the "bring a buddy" system, I hope that female riders who normally may not come out to race will find it easier to try downhill for the first time. From the perspective of the race promoter, there is not much of a cost difference for the event to double the women's field, and having an excited group of riders means a lot more to me - Neko Mulally"

Well done on the "bring a buddy" system and equal payout for Pro Women!

I flew from Bellingham to Nashville, I rode Windrock while I was down there. I cannot say enough good things about Windrock and the people. Legit dh trails too!

Coming down from mountain biking heaven, that's saying something. So good to see more riding options like this pop up around the country. And I realize they don't simply "pop up", it takes a lot of hard work. Grew up shredding the southeast before we even called it that. I definitely hope to again.

I live right next to Baily and would love to do this. To bad I can only afford a trail bike at the moment. Maybe Ill just race on it haha!

COME ON! A 2016 trail bike is more downhilly than a 2006 DH bike...You can do it! I say this from a place of zero knowledge or research...But it sounds good!

@Joeief: Trust me I'm highly considering it. I want to get into DH so bad I have even considered selling trail bike and getting one. But since I live in Pisgah I feel that may be a little silly.

Dude I've always raced DH on questionable rigs: Hardtail, Heckler with a Vbrake and a Boxxer, Bullit, and now Capra - do it. I did have a Turner DHR for a bit but a modern enduring bike destroys it.

I've seen tons of folks shredding trail bikes at both Wind Rock and Bailey Mountain.
