Mike Montgomery's DH and Slope Bikes Stolen

Aug 4, 2011 at 9:15
by Rob Dunnet

While on our way up to Darren Berrecloth's event in Mount Washington, Mike Montgomery's Banshee Legend DH bike and Banshee Rampant Slope Bike were stolen out of the back of his truck. The truck was parked in a hotel parking lot full of lights and security cameras. The bikes were also locked to the truck and to the other bikes. Also stolen was a Saracen Myst DH bike on loan from Saracen Designer Ryan Carroll. The funny thing is that Mike's Banshee Amp is still on the empty rack. I guess the people responsible can tell when a bike has been beaten and left it for dead.

If you see any of these one of a kind bikes contact Nanaimo Police or the lovely people at Pinkbike.

Mike's Rampant - Green and Black with Custom Sticker Job that took Mike hours.

Mike Montgomery. Upside down and laid out for a perfectly extended super flip on run 1. Somehow he only scored a 65 on this run and given his crash in run 2 he didn t advance.
Mike Montgomery

Frame: Banshee Rampant - Long with Custom Headtube
Fork: Manitou Circus - White
Stem: Straitline - Black with first generation Straitline Gyro (works pretty amazing, if you see this one for sale you should buy it)
Bars: ODI - Black with Custom Pink ODI Grips with "In Memory of Nana" written on the locks
Brakes: Hayes Prime
Cranks: Race Face Atlas - Green with Straitline Bash Guard
Pedals: Straitline - Black (not the new ones, they were in my travel bag)
Chain Guide: Straitline Silent Guide
Chain Tension Device: Yess
Wheels: Industry Nine - Black Rims, Green Hubs, Green Spokes, Two Pink Spokes
Tires: Geax
Seat: SDG Seat and Post

mike

Mike's Legend - Green and Black with Custom Sticker Job that took a little less time than the Rampant

mike

Frame: Banshee Legend - Medium
Fork: Manitou Dorado - Black with Red Decals
Stem: Straitline - Black Direct Mount
Bars: ODI - Black with Custom Pink ODI Grips with "In Memory of Nana" written on the locks
Brakes: Hayes Prime
Cranks: Race Face Atlas - Green with Straitline Bash Guard
Chain Guide: Straitline Silent Guide
Pedals: Straitline - Black (still not the new ones)
Chain Guide: Straitline Silent Guide
Wheels: Industry Nine - Black Rims, Green Hubs, Green Spokes, Two Pink Spokes
Tires: Maxxis Minnons
Seat: SDG Seat and Post

Ryan Carroll's Saracen Myst:

Frame: Saracen Myst - Large
Fork: Rock Shock Boxxer Team
Stem: Straitline - Orange Direct Mount
Bars: Race Face Atlas - Blue
Brakes: Avid - Code
Cranks: Race Face Atlas - Red with Straitline Bash Guard
Chain Guide: Straitline Silent Guide
Pedals: Strailtine - Silver
Wheels: Blue Spank Spike Rims, Black Hadley Hubs - Rims have Camp of Champions logo on them.

The bikes are pretty similar to the pictures but have had several custom things done to them. They should be easy to spot, so if you see any of these bikes give the Nanaimo Police a call or message me on Pinkbike.

Thief´s are starting to notice that those bikes cost more than a good car, and they are easy to steal and disassemble and sell parts. Next time don´t leave the bike there like you´re the Boss and nobody is going to remember to steal your bike.

There have been tons of bike thefts lately. I recently had five bikes stolen in Whistler on the night after the Slopestyle. The bikes were in a locked storage room and cable locked together. Discovering that someone stole your bikes is the worst possible feeling. I hope that they will be able to recover these bikes and the thieves will be locked up.

This is exactly why you bring your bikes in the hotel rooms guys. Come on. Every ABL national we went to, bikes came in the room. Even if it was a casino in Reno. Bikes get walked thru casino, and up elevator into room.

This situation really sucks, and even more that these were custom bikes, that also probably took the guys at Banshee awhile to decal up. I hope you get them back. But, like said, from now on, bring your bikes in the hotel room. It's not that much of a PITA to do so (yea, maybe after a suicical long day of driving it is... but still).

Good luck boys. Keep your eyes peeled. Might want to get the bike bounty hunter cammy on this one =].

Go ahead a neg prop me for this one: I don't understand why there is so much sympathy for this situation. Bikes are stolen from people every day, more often from people that would move oceans just to have a truck to lock them to. I've had bikes stolen and infact my entire house was gutted by thieves once and almost everything was taken, it sucks I get it, but life goes on. Further more I can't feel much sympathy for a guy who gets his bike for free compared to the guy who having their bike or not means making it to work the next day or not or the young rider who's saved up for years to buy something nice just to find it gone one morning. Mike is one of my favourite riders and I hope he gets his bikes back, but if not I'm sure he can figure something out in time for the event. I believe in karma and that who ever took it needed it more than Mike or at least the cash value of it. Pipe down PB users, it'll all work out.
  • + 5
flag YetiMong (Aug 5, 2011 at 5:01)
I'm with Ebehn on this one. Yes it sucks massively that such unique bikes/frames have been stolen from Mike especially as they were dedicated in such a way.

But.

He is most probably going to get all the kit replaced for free by his sponsor with just a couple of phone calls. There are thousands of bikes stolen every year and most of them are stolen from people who had to pay for them, often saving up for months in order to afford them. Certainly if my bike was stolen it would take at least a year for me to save enough money to replace it like for like and I bet most people reading this are in the same boat.

Furthermore

We only seem to get informed about thefts on Pinkbike when the bikes belong to pros or large corporations. Where's the stories about the little guys? You don't see stories about ordinary people whose bikes have been stolen on the front page here do you??

I'm sure this will be a very unpopular opinion, but what those guys did makes all of us look bad. There is a way to handle situations like that, and that's not it. I've had 6 bikes stolen (yes I know I have the worst damn luck ever), found 4 of them, and two of those I found attached to a bike rack and waited for the person to come to get it and had the cops waiting both times. Both people got arrested. I'm not saying I don't understand their anger, because I really do get it, and it took everything in me not to just wait and slug the people who took them, but then I most likely would have been charged with assault.

Not to rub salt in the wound or anything, but would you not agree that Mike is a bit naive if he thinks he can leave his expensive bikes locked to the back of his truck in a place like Nanaimo over night?

There's a large amount of Nanaimo's population - many of them Native Canadians - that live below the poverty line and/or are involved in drug abuse and crime. Chances are the thieves don't really care about who's bikes they were or if they're one of a kind.

I've had numerous bikes stollen from me over the years... I know how much it sucks. So I tend to be a bit paranoid about these things.... Hindsight is 20-20, but I would have brought the bikes inside.

Also... really sucks about the bike that was dedicated to cancer survivors. I would guess the thieves don't care much about that either, sadly.

Come on man, it's not like he knows the area personally or anything. And usually it's a pretty safe bet that your bike will be fine if it's locked up... alongside a bunch of other locked up bikes. I mean I've traveled around quite a bit and I leave my bike locked to the roof rack because I usually have no where else to put the bike and I've never had any second guesses about it because it's impossible to tell what the area is like with theft. What I'm trying to say is that I wish a slow, painful punishment on all ski/bike/board/etc. thieves.

If you steal a used car which has the same value of some bikes you can get grand theft but what do you get for stealing a bike??!!!!!!

I had few a bikes stolen from me when I was living in Victoria, just south of Nanaimo. One was locked to the bike rack, on my car... the theif took the entire rack right off the car!! Another was locked to a concrete pole, right outside the main entrance to a hotel where I was working... the theif used liquid nitrogen to freeze the lock, then smashed it with a hammer... the only thing left behind was the shattered remnants of my Kryponite U-lock. Bottom line, if a theif wants your bike, it's as good as gone!! So always go the extra step, and keep your bike in eyesight at all times. A lock is only good for keeping honest people honest.

If a hotel says dont bring bike in say ok thankyou no problem. Wait an hour or so til they not looking and unload your shit right into the room. As long as you not making mess in room they cant tell or do anything. Leaving equiptment out of sight is not an option, not even locked in van or car. Tough times bring out the worst thieves. Just realized they took his bike dedicated to breast cancer and now I real tight about this. If anyone catch this thief you need to message me so I can get on a plane come out there and mutilate this individual. Dead serious. So karma came back to me.... even though after the first stolen bike, the other three were legit.
I remember going to BCIT and coming out of classes for the day, dreaming about getting out of the city riding up grouse to get my peace of mind... only to find my bike stolen from the campus. Two locks, also gone (they do it clean...). I was devastated. That was the third ride I had stolen in 2 years. I also had my apartment broken in while I was at classes, but thanks to some nice neighbors, all my stuff including my damn futon, was saved but sitting in the alley when I got home.

opwann is 100% right. i used to live in nanaimo and it is pretty rough in some areas but some hotels might not want them bringing bikes in so they may have had no other choice then to leave them in the truck. But what i am surprised about is that they would have had to get thru the lock thats holding them to the truck and if they didnt take off the lock holding them to each other they would have had to run away with two bikes attatched to each other.

So a couple of thing were learned. dont stay over night at nanamio, pick hotels that are more bike fridntly, and get better locks.

Hopefully the security cameras caught an image of the theft. I'll U-lock my bikes together on my rack so if someone cuts the cable attaching them to the rack, they still will have to lug 3 bikes all Ulocked together away from my ride. I figured the cost of 2 U-locks was worth it if it potentially deters a thief. Although any determined thief will steal anything regardless of what you do unless u bring the bikes in the room.

Really sucks...but not suprising at all. I lived in Nanaimo for many years. I can't say it has gotten worse but it's hasn't improved. 15 years ago it was the crystal meth craze. Cars were being broken into at an enormous rate just for spare change. That was when the economy there was moving along. These days with a 'realistic' unemployment rate of upwards of 25%, a drug scene that may be different but still prevalent (read: heroin), the crime rate is worse. Those bikes will be painted black and sporting Monter T's and crusing Haliburton Street tomorrow.

On another note there are certain 'organised' gangs of theives/scammers there that do tarket big ticket items and re-sell. Those attacks have been well planned. Many businesses there have been on the ass end of that stick.

On a positive note the riding is very good, albeit underrated....

People need to stop thinking that they're god. No, you cannot leave your bike outside locked to a truck ANYWHERE, because it WILL get stolen.

ya i agree they will do anything to steal bikes but what if the manager didnt let them take the bikes to there room or let them put it in a secure room? the most they could do then was lock the bikes up to the truck

flag Bmxerch (Aug 4, 2011 at 11:19)
Or go to another hotel that would let them bring them in. That's a really tough call.... Logic. Use it.

Bmxerch you love arguing ppl eh, its like every time a controversial topic pops up you're somehow in the mix. Mason Mashon, then the dropouts of the the new Morpheus, seems like just riding your bike isnt fun enough and stress free you've got to come on the internet and get your 2 cents out on every goddamn newsletter

flag Bmxerch (Aug 4, 2011 at 14:33)
What's your point ? Yeah, I like to add my opinion into some topics.

This is not arguing. This is me saying use some god damn logic, and carterwills being a complete asshat and not using any common sense. But, oh well. I'm gonna go leave my bike un-attended in Nanaimo, probably one of the most notorious places for theives, a bike lock will stop a theif no problem at all. Facepalm

And what do you think your doing, Filip ? Your instigating me to make me argue against you. Good job, dude. I applaud people like you.

My statement here is that Mike is a complete idiot for leaving his bikes outside, unatended. No matter who you are, Gee Atherton or joe blow on the street. If you leave your bike un-attended and think a stupid little bike lock with stop people, you deserve to get your bikes stolen. If the Hotel wouldn't let the bikes in, you go to a different hotel that will - Oh look, common sense. Someone actually used it.

End of story.

nowhere is safe anymore, I even lock mine on the ferry when I go back to visit....even though they say it isn't necessary. In terms of hotels, I've always taken my bikes in regardless if there is a policy...usually through a back exit. They don't mind as much as you think...they really DO like your $120 per night:-)

Thats really terrible and it makes me sick.... We were not allowed bikes in our hotel room at crankworx but we brought them in anyways. Me and my buddies bikes are worth bout 1200$ together, and i would never ever leave my bike in a truck over night even if windows were tinted and u could not see them at all. I am absolutly shocked in every way that mike would leave his bikes in the back of his truck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! People will steal anything that is locked to anything. Dont matter! This blows my mind! Id rather sleep in my truck then in the bed compared to leaving them alone all night long. No fence to them, just saying.... Frown

I cannot count how many times all pros at cworx walk away from their bikes. If i was a theif i vould have stolen several.

Either way really sad. Best of luck to u mike Smile
