What has been an awesome first year of 4X ProTour, culminated in one of the most exciting races tonight here in Willingen, Germany.

When the ProTour finals were announced that they were going to be in Willingen, Joost Wichman stepped forward suggesting changes that could make the existing track better and give more chances for passing. The changes he made were absolutely amazing and the racing all night was top drawer.

In qualifying, Joost Wichman made his intentions clear from the start setting the fastest time. David Graf, fresh from the BMX World Championships and competing in his first 4X ProTour of 2012 was 2nd ahead of Tomas Slavik and Jakub Riha. The times were incredibly tight with just 2 seconds separating the top 20 men.

In the women's, World Champion, Anneke Beerten took the fastest time in front of Celine Gros, Lucia Oejtens and Steffi Marth was in 4th. This made the overall points very interesting with 3 women in contention of taking the overall title.

So onto the racing. The shock of the first round was Jakub Riha who went out with a big crash in the first race. Another shock came from Mick Hannah who, riding in his first ProTour found himself on the floor in the first turn when he simply ran out of track. A side from Riha and Hannah, all the other men's contenders progressed to the second round of racing.

In the second round, there were passes galore. Michal Marossi, in a photo finish was overtaken by Nico Vink who was riding absolutely superb all weekend. For those who thought that 4X racing was all over in the first turn, the ProTour has proven that wrong time and time again.

Onto the semi finals. Joost Wichman, Lucas Mechura, Michal Prokop and Scott Beaumont were in the gate. Joost got the snap and led the race. The others all were wheel to wheel for 2nd. In the final turn, Mechura and Prokop came together with Prokop crashing out. Joost and Mechura were through.

In the second semi final, Graf was against Slavik, Derbier and Vink. This race went the way of qualifying with Graf and Slavik going through.

In the women's final, Anneke Beerten lined up against Celine Gros, Lucia Oejens and Steffi Marth. With the overall title on the line, Anneke got the snap and just did not look back. Anneke hit the pro line doubles and took the win which was also enough to give her the 2012 4X ProTour overall title. 2nd went to Lucia, 3rd was Steffi and unfortunately Celine Gros crashed out of the race. Celine has had a fantastic year and this was enough to give her 2nd overall ahead of Katy Curd who finished 5th today, enough for 3rd overall.

So, it was the final main event of 2012. Wichman, Graf, Slavik and Mechura were on the gate. Slavik got the snap but Graf got inside of him on turn 2. The two of them went bar to bar on the pro line doubles but Graf got the edge and Slavik had to roll the first double. Graf looked like he was away, but Wichman charged whilst he was battling with Slavik and got into the lead on turn 3. Through the rhythm section, Graf got close then on the final turn he dived inside and took the lead. Across the line, it was close, but Graf took it from Wichman, Mechura and Slavik in 4th. This was one of the best finals all year and yet again showcased just how fantastic 4X racing is right now.

Now its time to party. Roll on 2013.

 Congrats to the winners, but...

First place men get 1500 Euro. First place women get 400 Euro?? That's just plain ridiculous. Come on sponsors, this is 2012!!

probably doesn't cover there travelling expenses

that is just wrong , yeah the women aint as fast as the men but they deserve equal winnings , really uncool

Men are better and draw the crowds so deserve more IMO. In tennis women now get the same as men but only play for 3/5ths of the time, a situation like that is ridiculous.

And when it comes to the prize fund, if the popularity isn't there then that's life. There are plenty of sports where professionals have to pay to compete.

Most of the time when you organize events, you set the prizes amounts depending on the number of people attending. If there are 10 girls riding for 30 guys riding (roughly 1/3), well expect the ladies to win less than the guys (1/3 of what the male winner gets in fact)... Unless you manage to find reaaaaaally generous sponsors, it's not going to change any time soon :/

Makes sense, if there are more men competing than there is women why should they get the same? same as downhill, women don't get the same as men because there is alot less women competing at top level!

it's hardly making it attractive finance wise for women to compete though is it ? 1st place for womens just about covers travel costs

You can expect corporations to pay women 70 cents for every dollar they pay a man (for the same job) but in sporting events? I'd be ashamed if it was my event.

Its a catch 22 situation. Female racers don't get as much exposure and prize money because there are less of them competing and a wider spread of abilities = not as close racing. This means less interest from sponsors as well, making it difficult to afford to go to different countries to race. There are loads more girls capable of racing the full Pro Tour series that simply can't afford it!

If women were as good as the men then I'd be happy for them to get paid the same but the women riders probably don't go much faster than me and I'm afraid I just can't find that impressive, I want to see people pushing boundaries

they may not be as fast as men for obvious reasons but they try just has hard and are just as committed.

But I could go and race and be committed as I possibly could, however I'd still be slow and boring to watch. If it was just about commitment then people would watch the paralympics

So are you trying to say girls shouldn't be allowed to race because YOU don't find them impressive? Or trying to say that nobody watches the paralympics because they aren't as fast as those in the Olympics? I know plenty of guys who find the girls racing interesting to watch and can be inspired by girls being committed and putting in the hard work even if they are quicker than them. Doesn't mean that they don't deserve some respect for putting in such hard work. And its the rule of averages, if there are 3 females at any one race for every 10 males there are then of course the men will be faster on average as there is a bigger talent pool to pick from. I'm pretty sure the crowd at Fort William went mental for all the action in the women's 4x race whether it was slower than the men's or not there was still plenty of overtaking, crashes and excitement involved and the event wouldn't have been as good without it.

  • 4 0
They took it out of the World Cup circuit, but this is still a UCI sanctioned event, and 4X will be a full event at World Champs.
