 Who knew that we will all be riding 11 speed specific proprietary pedals? JK

 and wearing shoes with no grip..

 Technically on a flat dry surface those shoe's will grip better than any with tread but I thought 5.10 used treaded soles to hook up on loose ground when you're walking and your pedal pins when you're riding, especially in the wet. puzzled me that one!

 I get that they would grip better on a flat surface but what if that flat surface is covered in water, dirt or mud? I also feel like hiking anything in those would be difficult.

 You'll lose a little bit of traction on loose stuff hiking, but trust me those shoes will be sticky as sh*t on flats!

 They actually designed the new soles to be less grippy ,apparently people complained that it was hard to reposition your foot... I normally just time my foot repositioning with going over a bump or jump.... I hope they still offer them in the ' old ' tread pattern , there is no way I will be able to push up and hills this winter with the new ones.

 not to sure if 5.10 thorght about the wet weather riding, pushing up tracks...

 I talked to the 5.10 rep at crankworx and he said the VXi line of shoes is more for AM riders who want to be able to reposition their feet more easily. You'll still be able to get freeriders with the regular sole more suited for DH riding.

 I bet you can do a bit a rock climbing with them, they also have a canyoning or canyoneering line of shoes, using pretty much the same stealth rubber.

 I think it might be good on rock, or until you put your foot down on something dirty or wet. Can't see how they have made production. I mean, I believe it will grip a pedal really well when both are clean and dry, but they're not are they? If it's bone dry on the ground, they'll grip the pedals but not the ground when you want to walk up a shit-steep section pushing the bike. If it's wet or muddy or roots, you're shit out of luck too. Honestly, when I ride I spend ten times as long pushing up as I do riding down. These will be shit for 90% of what I want them for.

 Bald 5.10's are still better than other shoes with grip. These will be fine for those looking for those features in their shoes. They're R&D has done them pretty well so far...

 Try them, then knock them. Or don't if you don't care enough. Seems a little odd to knock five ten for letting something go into production the moment you see one of their new products.

 i use my 5.10's for hiking and they kick ass in any condition. wet rocks, or dust. they are the best shoe i've ever had. and they grip to my pedals too btw.

 i bet one day we'll see flat pedals completely without spikes and bald shoes. It's just a matter of nano technology and inovation, More surface means more grip - we learnt from mother nature. There is a lizard who climbs vertically with his small flat feet, and the reason is microscopic, just a tiny hairs, millions of them, they rapidly increase amount of surface he's touching the ground

 makripper totally agree. 5.10 has been in the climbing world for a long time too and this is what rubber is used on their bike line. i'd be happy to buy to these grippy beasts, the bald is good

Midsoles wear out before the tread does on many shoes.

 I hiked 5 days/60km/3000+hm over the Tantra (ry) Mountains from Slovakia to Poland in a half dead pair of 5.10 spitfires, and even pretty worn they gripped on everything just as well as my girlfriends very expensive german hiking shoes (Lowa if there are any hikers around). I'd say give these new ones a try before you rag them out, 5.10 have been making exceptional outdoor shoes for a long time.

 Yeah, there are other hikers around, and I would NEVER cross sports with my shoes... Maybe it's just me but...
I'd rather carry someone else's tent in my pack than wear MTB shoes, and there's one reason. Weight.
DON'T START, I know, some are lighter, but for the same high-end money that a "light" pair costs, I can get a badass pair of Lowa, Merrell, Teva (hiking sandals), etc, and be that much better off with a specialized and purpose driven tread design...
Just my 2c, but these shoes have a SPECIFIC purpose, and if I were to buy them, I would never use them for anything else!

 5.10 actually started off as a rock climbing shoe company and then branched into mtb....

 A smooth sole will mean a better interface with your pedal. It's not the tread that hooks up with your pedals spikes. It's the rubber. And it doesn't matter if your pedals are wet or muddy. The spikes will still grip this sole. The only issue I foresee is if you're off the bike, as the "original" sole was already not that great for hike-a-bike traction in some conditions (i.e. muddy). The tread pattern is irrelevant when it comes to wear - on my climbing shoes, I replace them when holes appear through the rubber. And there's no tread on climbing shoes.

 It seems that everyone who is/was a rock climber looks at the smooth sole and says "That makes sense", whereas the rest of you all think that the pattern of the sole matters. As Smike correctly states above, the rubber is key.

Imagine wearing a set of football boots on rock - they LOOK like they'd grip, but they'd slide off in a second because they do not conform to the surface.

Walking up a muddy hill would be about the only time these 5.10 sucked (and that's when you'd want your football boots on).

 I'm not worried about the grip on the pedals , more the grip on the muddy ground when pushing back up , that is where tread becomes important.

 Seriously? I'd much rather slip on the ground than on my pedals. Plus, if you have a lift, you don't have to worry about pushing up anyway. And there are other options if you spend a lot of time pushing.

 sheesh you are dumb. put a shoes, that has a flat surface on the bottom of it on a pedal, how much contact area? put a shoe like the 5.10 impact with multiple protrustions sticking out, less surface area. figure it out!!!!!

 See, I've dipped my bill into every sport we're referencing here, and my only point was that I would never cross disciplines with my shoes. I completely agree that the partial flat sole will work, and work well... Can't wait to see them in person!

 i know what your saying togood2die. if you have the extra money, get specific shoes for hiking only. but if your hike a biking, it doesnt make sense.

 This is my last comment on this subject... you obviously missed the press release info on the new 5-10 sole design , they said them selfs they have intentionally made them SLIGHTLY LESS GRIPPY by making the soles SMOOTH because some riders found them TOO grippy so this is the solution they come up with. You see with the soles having a treaded design you kind of ' lock ' against the treads making it harder to readjust your foot , to combat this they made the soles smooth so that you no longer get this locked feeling on the treads. Your opinions on a totally smooth sole being more grippy are totally invalid when 5-10 said they have designed them to be LESS grippy , I can find the press release info if you want .

 Obviously to anyone of average intelligence, it doesn't matter what kind of rubber the tread is made of if you are walking up something wet and slippery. These shoes are not going to grip mud, wet grass, wet roots, wet rock with mud on top, wet rock with moss or algae on top, etc.

5.10 have done their homework alright - all you have to do to sell a shitload of overpriced shoes is

1. make them look cool
2. write 5.10 on them
3. tell everyone they are really good

and hey presto! Instant sales.

You are all welcome to buy these shoes and find out for yourself how ineffective they are at gripping anything other than pedals or bone dry rock/street.

They are litterally the best shoes for flat pedals out there by a long shot.

Sure you can ride in skate shoes , but the difference is night and day.

And yes I agree even the ones with tread are awfull at gripping anything but pedal pins , the amount of times I have slipped over in them pushing up slippery banks is unreal , but the grip n the pedals more than makes up for it.

And yeah they are overpriced ( what in mountain biking is not ? ) but they do last very well and grip like nothing else.

 I have never ridden in 5.10s, and I am not disputing that they grip pedals really well. I am saying that for every hour I spend biking, I probably spend 50 minutes walking up and 10 minutes riding down. I therefore need a shoe that can help me with the 50 minutes as much as the ten, and bald shoes are not it, regardless of how good they are at the ten. I'm not saying 5.10 are shit. I have some 5.10 rock boots which I think are pretty unreal. What I am saying is that these bald 5.10s are not suitable for the kind of riding I do, and I believe not suitable for the majority of MTBers, because I am an average MTBer. Also, I have a mate who is sponsored by 5.10, and he told me they are streets ahead of anything else, almost like being clipped in on flat pedals. Hard to believe but I trust him. That same friend rides in Adidas fashion-skate shoes a lot of the time though. Actions speak louder than words.

 try them before you knock the jaame.. I lived on vancouver island for 3 years, it's wet and slippery, with tonnes of roots and rocks. these shoes held up to all of that and they became my hiking shoes as well because of the amazing grip!! then out here in penticton, its sandy and slippery in lots of parts. Do you know ANY shoe that is good in sand? I didn't think so! Also, they kick ass on the pedals. I dont use clips on my xc bike because i dont need to! and that includes 105km round trip xc rides. I've had this one pair of 5.10's for 2 years and have had not one issue with them. I also ride DH with them and they are amazing!! you can whine and moan all you want, but i'll use what works for me. have a nice time complaining about shoes you have never used. People like you are what clog forums with useless untrue facts and garbage in general. Take care!

 what hype? they actually work amazingly well. don't believe the hype of the automobile or the airplane, they're just trendy and all hype. 5.10 would have to ask how rich are ya and take your statement literally...

Did you know that the Stealth S1 sole, which they use on their mtn bike shoe line-up, uses a rubber compound that's harder and less grippy than a vast majority of performance mtn bike tires? You should be able to sense it quite clearly, if you put your actual hands on both. I honestly believe my high end road running shoes may have a better rubber compound than S1, and it better have! The Stealth C4 sole, found on their climbing shoes, is a different story though, as that would compare better to some sticky DH tires.

I use FiveTens and I do believe that people hype up the sole a bit much, but it's not only the sole that makes FiveTens good. Their fit and comfort is really good and they just work well. I used to use my running shoes, but the sole wasn't thick enough to absorb shock and prevent the feel of the pedal pins digging in and didn't offer enough ankle support. I tried skate shoes and those were even worse. FiveTens are expensive. I wouldn't buy them unless they were 50% off, since I believe they're not really worth more than $80 USD, but I have no prob spending $80+ USD for good running shoes. Some people spend far more on clipless compatible shoes and I can't stand hiking or walking around in those.

 Why? Just make up a 6 speed group of sprockets and limit your mech. Not really DH specific either.

 It has a 9t cog, allowing you to run a smaller chainring for more clearance but without sacrificing your top speed. Ideally suited for modern DH bikes with low bottom brackets. So yeah, really would be DH specific.... pleb.

 If you don't care about brands, Canfield Bros have DH specific Capreo hubs right now.

 I looked at them a bit back but couldn't actually find any to order online, I'd happily go for a Canfield hub.

 I think 9t sprockets are overrated. I run an 11-32 top gear and I know from using a GPS tracker that the gear spins out at 62-63 km/h. If you're going faster than that you're either a) riding on a track that's too easy or b) riding on the road. No one needs to go faster than 62 km/h on a real track. Look at world cup races. I would guess they put the speed trap on the fastest section and I've never seen anything over 60. 32 is the smallest chainring you can run on a normal 104bcd spider.

6 or 7 speed is something I am definitely interested in though. Most guys would agree that they use a lot less than ten gears on their DH bikes. I probably use 5 on mine, but I'd go for 7 speed Saint or Zee if I had the choice.

@ Mr. Pleb, less sprockets means a narrower cassette and therefore less dish on the back wheel. It's not the same as getting a ten speed and screwing the range screws in. The way of the future is ditch 150 back ends and 83mm shell BBs, revert to 135 and 73, and run a 7 speed block with a dishless rear wheel. I think that shit-hot carbon demo already has just that. Stronger back end, lower Q-factor so you can make more power, less chance of twatting your back end on shit through tight sections.

 I haven't seen one, but I acknowledge the possibility that they may exist.

 Don't demos have Asymmetric Rear Triangle (zero dish) anyway? I know my 05 did, had to build a dishless 135 for it.

 simple, sure. but when it comes to flat pedals that's kind of perfect

 with all due respect, 5.10's, with their sole as is, can be almost too sticky. i see no need to make the surface fully flat. not to mention that as a "freerider" who already uses a freeriding shoe, i find myself hike a biking and pushing my bike up trail- regularly. how is a flat sole going to provide traction? the rubber doesn't stick that great to dirt. i would not buy this shoe over the previous pattern.

 My prob with the Freerider shoe is that it fills up with dirt far too easily. Also since it has no ankle support, dabs can lead to sprains. I'm having more luck with Karvers.

 you know obee, i totally didnt take hiking into account, i see the issue.

I got the impacts and i love them, they have plenty of support and dont get full of dirt. They feel more like a boot than a shoe when i first got them though, besides when your standing on pedals

 fill up with dirt? i just buy the standard black 5.10 and have owned about 5 pairs and never had a problem like that. fwiw that f*ckin shoe stopped a poorly directed axe from splitting my foot clean in half, and has the cut mark to show it. i see the design progression and aesthetic changes in these current 5.10 shoes as "new icing on a cake that has already satisfied the appetite" in an effort to get the populace to "buy more cakes". i see no need to change the tread pattern or much else on these shoes, and buy them just about every season.
an excellent trail work shoe, and they also make great grass cutting shoes.

 Just remember that they make lots of different models, it is not like they are going to make all their soles smooth. No need to panic.

 The Karver is like the Impact (Mid) with a tongue, which has support for the inside half of the ankle. It has a thick base, so it makes ya a bit taller and your CoG a bit higher, but gives ya more standover for those times you happen to land without both feet firmly on the pedals.

Was only responding to obee1's comment that implies the Freerider shoe was meant for actual freeriding under a "freerider". I'm no freerider, but I do like to scan for new lines off of rocks and stuff, and I can only see those problems being more serious under real and more passionate/serious freeriders. Having to stop and empty out your shoes of gravel, dirt, and vegetation, and pick off prickly stuff off the laces gets old fast. Not to mention the issue with the sole coming unglued and the mesh material of the upper not being very tough on certain Freerider styles. Not sure how loose the dirt is for other plp or how hard they ride, but this is more like skate shoe with stiffer/thicker sole with stealth rubber compound.

 personally I'd like to see 5 ten step up materials and quality. I expect higher quality upper materials and better glue in a $135 shoe.

 I think Shimano only made "X" amount for the show. They were out of hats by the last half of dirt demo.
