New Oakley Icon Sender - Red Bull Rampage 2012

Oct 1, 2012 at 15:23
by Ian Hylands
At the 2010 Red Bull Rampage, riders were sent off a remarkable Oakley Icon Sender featuring a large wooden ramp overlooking a gutsy 40-foot drop. The structure was highlighted by a massive tower, watched over by “Josh,” an intimidating wooden skull structure created by Oakley eyewear designers. Nothing was more memorable from the 2010 event than Oakley rider Cameron Zink throwing a breath-taking 360 off of the Icon Sender, ultimately leading him to victory.

2012 is a whole new ball game as the new Sender packs a punch that will have the riders’ heads spinning. Josh and the Oakley Icon Sender are back and better than ever for this year’s Red Bull Rampage. The updated feature will include three sender options combined into one structure to create variety and leave it to the riders’ to decide how to attack the Sender.

new option into a big step up. icon sender is built with a better transition into it but is only 1 ft. forward so basically the same gap.

The Icon Sender from the air, the third line still has yet to be finished....

For more information check out Oakley's web page on the design with a gallery of images of Josh being put together.

$100 someone will flip that drop!
  • 8 3
 Which one?
  • 32 1
 Zink! (off the big one)
  • 27 2
bighucker503- The big one, zink, semenuk or even pilgrim
  • 8 1
 i wanna see another 360!!!!
  • 20 0
game of rampage "clue"- my bets on brendog, off thebig drop, with a nac that would make mcgrath proud
  • 12 7
If it was the Smith Optics drop- Semenuk might flip it. No incentive for him there........Zink on the other hand does use Oakley, so I bet he will Knac-Flip it!
  • 7 0
How hard is it to backflip something without much of a lip on it? Are you guys expecting a front flip?
  • 19 16
 sionr644 why $100, your not from USA ! £100 =UK!
  • 6 1
i say smenuk or mccaul might frontflip the oakley drop or they'll 360!
  • 1 0
The big one or the small one? It would be too technical on it, I think.
  • 8 1
honestly that drop is too much for a frontflip. i remember zink saying it was between 3'ing the sender or flipping the canyon gap, hopefully he does the latter this year
  • 3 0
the last one to be built looks like it might be the biggest one out of the three.
  • 7 0
also you have to remember their on big dh bikes with 180mm singlecrowns, their not as flickable as their hardtails or slope bikes with half the travel, so dont be expecting the tricks you see at crankworks

I thought Sam Pilgrim was too afraid of mountain biking to do Rampage? Didn't he say he's strictly a dirt jumper/slope rider before at Crankworx?

All this hype about bmx tricks off wooden ramps is degenerative, simple-minded, nauseating, and negative, go watch the X Games if that's what excites you. That's not what Rampage is all about and you are perverting the sport for hyping it.
  • 2 1
i can see Semenuk flipping it
  • 28 0
Protour spreading misery once again. Why don't you find something better to do with your time than moan like a b*tch all the time? You are the purest of cock.

Rampage is about bringing everyone together for a gnar fest- tricks, speed, style are all welcome there- it's what makes the event so good. It's awesome that people from all disciplines are getting amped about a single event. It's gonna be sweet. I hope you get conjunctivitis or something so you can't watch it.

"All this hype about bmx tricks off wooden ramps"... Do everyone here a favour and try any one of those lines on a BMX, and then post that again.

 Mcgazza will flip it.

This competition definitely separates the styles of different riders, you will be able to tell who is right at home with this type of riding, and who is a bit more uncomfortable. It makes for a great event. I'm really looking forward to the Rampage. Favorite contest by far.

Too much woodwork in this rampage. Should stick to its roots!
  • 59 5
The woodwork is just an option for the riders. Cool thing about rampage is they get to build there lines for the most part, so if they dont wanna do them, they can build there line around them.
  • 22 2
a a fan and after seeing "where the trail ends" i really do like the less nails more shovels kind of rampage.
  • 20 8
Haha, except that there's only 5 wood features built this year and they're all near the bottom of the course... here's another angle of the new icon sender feature www.pinkbike.com/photo/8733138

You guys have to shut up with that. There's an overwhelming majority of natural lines as opposed to wooden ones and its kind of hard to find new lines in a venue where they've already had a few events at. Ever watch a FWT event? New and creative lines are almost impossible because guess what? There's only so much you can do with one event area. Get over it already.
  • 4 3
I don't like wooden feature when they limit the line choices if you want to hit them. But one feature with three output option is someting good.
  • 27 8
More wooden stuff ... its getting a bit OTT now , a wooden kicker doesnt bother me but when you start making disabled acesss ramps across the mountians it's going way to far.. Not that they arent amazing features they just really don't suit this event in my opinion.
  • 38 5
man you guys will find any thing to bitch about why cant you just be happy that there is such a rad event going down in 6 days and they are showing it live and free
  • 10 2
 +1 bigburd. Made me laugh.
  • 9 3
Because this event is supposed to push the limits of mountain biking and its becoming more and more slopestyle orientated. And i hope you realise that redbull do get money from this live stream (from advertising), they wouldnt just waste money making sure people could watch it live if there was no financial benefit.
  • 2 1
Nothing is 'supposed' to push the limits OliScale, that comes from each riders own determination. Having the Oakley sender as an option for the riders creates what's called a 'line choice'. Some riders my touch wood, some may not- lets wait and see what happens.
  • 6 0
hahaha disabled access ramps! awesome mental image of people in wheelchairs doing backflips off the oakley sender!
  • 32 3
If you haven't been to Rampage in person, and stood up at the top and looked down at the course, I don't think you can even have an educated opinion on the matter. It's something that is just a little too much to comprehend.
  • 6 0
^ Thank you. When you have to use a rope to ascend to the top without falling down cliff bands and dying, or actually climbing up cliffs, you know you have a gnarly-ass course on your hands.

Notice how all those complaining have never been there and most likely will never go... there's a correlation to this.
  • 25 1
All the people deffending the wood work and stuff....do you think Zink deserved the title back in 2010?!!...he pull one of the biggest tricks, but that´s all....in the other hand, THE CLAW, a real big mountain guy is already not happy with the rampage...yeah, prob the features are down the bottom...but again, if you don´t hit this, as we saw clearly on 2010, you are not scoring big points...so were is the true big mountain meaning Rampage has always strive for..? By far, in 2010 Claw's line was the real deal, he pull tricks off cliffs he carve him self...to me, that is where the rampage is all about...you vrs the mountain....the only feature I would leave is the canyon gap...that is the only option you should have, the rest, go pick a shovel and start studying the hill and the curves it have to surprise the judges with your natural builds....
  • 2 0
hey Ian have you ever been to the tonnie drop on the shore? just wondering if theres anything similar in size at the rampage for an idea of scale, seeing the tonnie drop in person was definetly hard to comprehend

Calm down bud (sata), there's a difference between hating on the judging and hating on the actual venue... buncha whiny school girls...
  • 7 1
@sata2007 have you been there? And you forgot to mention that in 2008 Semenuk won, and I don't believe he hit any wooden ramps in his run. I'm not trying to be overly critical, but having been to, and shot photos of, every Rampage except for the first one, I have a different understanding. I've also spent a lot of days building and shooting freeride stuff in Utah, and for a one off or short lived feature dirt can be fine, but Utah dirt is a little different when it comes to something like a 4 day long contest. It's like a race track. I don't believe there should be wooden features on a world cup DH track any more than you probably do, but sometimes it's really the only way to make something work.
  • 3 2
Ian, no I haven´t, my point is that I see each year more stuff being pre-build, as I said, its just my opinion, since 2008 when rampage came on board again, the pre-build have being growing up, this 2012 they open the field a little bit more, that to me tells me that is true my understanding by having prebuild lines with wood work that is taking a little more of what should be off the cliffs and stuff....

Semenuk won because, as I said, he score big points pulling tricks off lines with little prebuilds, but last year...there was another story...
  • 4 0
@finnrambo I'm not sure what you mean by the tonnie drop, but I've seen most of the big stuff on the shore, and Rampage is definitely a lot bigger than it looks in pictures most of the time. The sender was big last year, but the head on angle doesn't really show the size. Check out my sequence of Gully here
  • 1 0
sorry *toonie drop, its in the garret buehler fall edit, but after that sequence I can easily say thats the biggest thing I've ever seen! thanks for the pic
  • 1 0

  • 3 0
Having been there in person, I'm still more impressed by the terrain than how gnarly the features are, and just because the lines between big features would make most of us pee our pants it doesn't mean that the lines that Bearclaw took are not far more incredible. Sata2007 is dead on about how you have to hit one of the big features to get points, and I don't think it's right either because there's not a fair balance given to what is done on natural terrain (not that I can speak from experience about which requires more skill). Ian, since you've been here you know what can be done without any wooden run ins. You probably also know that there are lines around Grafton and Smith Mesa that have existed for years and still only require very little work to get pimped out.

I still find it hard to believe though that this is the same site where people were overwhelmingly convinced that Paul Bas's kicker in the desert was no different than something from a dirt jump competition.
  • 7 0
@treymotleyDH there always will be, but Sata2007 is definitely not one of them. He's a fairly respectable racer and he generally knows what's up.
  • 3 0
I think the wooden featured are bad ass, my concern upon seeing all the big wooden stuff though is that depending in the layout that it could lead to more of a "course" feeling, where guys are riding the same lines feeling like they have to hit the big stuff. Because when you have a few huge features at the bottom of a course, a disproportionate amount of weight usually gets put on those features. You see it alot in contests in all sports. Whoever throws the biggest trick over the big 'booter' or 'sender' at the end takes the win, regardless of the whole run.

We'll have to wait and see how it turns out. I'm pumped.
  • 4 5
Obviously the wood makes it less big mountain and more slopestyle but that is for the development of the sport. I for one am much keener to watch someone doing sick tricks off the wood rather than skidding down a mountainside with few features to give an idea of scale.

Airtime gives scale. Slopestyle is better to watch than big mountain. Any fool (me) can see that.
Zink won it last time on one big trick, in a run that was top to bottom inferior to Gee man's. Still, that 360 is still what everyone wants to talk about and watch. If Gee tricked the gap, maybe it would have been different.

More wood please!

And come on Pilgs! Put in a good one to silence all these wankers who think they are better than you.

And Brendog! Go on my son!
  • 4 0
Yeah I'm for B Dawg too, but not the ramps. They may as well build a roller coaster up there. Like you said it puts too much emphasis on one feature. stymies course creativity, and promotes groomed landings versus natural soft landings that the original Rampages were famous for....where a guy would huck off a cliff and his tire would sink in deep and leave a crater. But I'm still excited for this year, it will be crazy as ever.
  • 2 2
I think since these guys are pros the wooden ramps should be 2 ft wide max except for the berm. little ol amateur me at home rides 2ft wide ladders and thats plenty of safety room yet even a messily 6 ft off the ground feels so awesome. the wide wood takes the challenge out of it. might as well pave a street through. thats my only issue with the wood, the width.
  • 1 0
"the wide wood takes the challenge out of it"

Surely, the 50 x 50 ft at the end puts the challenge back in it?! I think a wide ramp / drop to give the riders some extra confidence when they're about to do that kind of crazy s**t is pretty much irrelevant - it's the jump / drop I'm interested in.

There seem to be a lot of people here that seem to have a very strong opinion about these things, but with little or no experience of what we're actually talking about here. As Ian pointed out earlier, and slightly more eloquently, if you haven't been to the Rampage* you don't understand, you would stand on the end of any of those features and s**t a brick, no matter how wide the ramp is!

(I have assumed you haven't ever hit anything of this size, if I am incorrect, I will have more respect for your opinion - after you link me to evidence below)

* Disclaimer - I haven't been to the rampage site myself, but I have ridden down (avoiding all features) the Mountain Style course in Chatel, which is the only Big Mountain competition in Europe - my understanding is that most of the features are small in comparison to the stuff we're discussing here, so I can only imagine how ridiculously huge these are! I look forward to seeing some people send it this weekend.
  • 1 0
You don't need experience of the rampage to make an opinion that this woodwork does not fit the scene in ones opinion. And yeah I probably would not hit even some of the smaller hits there with out papping my self
  • 2 3
 www.youtube.com/watch?v=izJe-8v1f7I&feature=plcp
20x30 theres your evidence. bigger than most who whine. I ain't a pussy. I just dont have the guys at red bull engineering and calculating ramps that make these jumps possible. Or sponsors paying for my bikes and injuries.
  • 1 0
sure, you can build your line around the woodwork and have an awesome all natural line, but your are not going to make the podium that way. I am pumped to see these senders being built but I agree with the statements saying this is moving rampage away from why the event was created in the first place. I am so pumped to see this go down!!!!!!

Agreed! :...... And insane is a good choice of description for the two wheeled carnage that is Rampage!
  • 1 0
Protour. What a great idea you've just given me about the rollercoaster. I'm not saying they should do this at Rampage, but I think it merits further discussion. They could have a DH rollercoaster event, where they go to some big as hell place like this, but instead of a make your own line idea, it's a single wooden rollercoaster duckboard thing from top to bottom. 2m wide the whole way down, berms, rollers, that kind of thing. Fastest rider to the bottom wins, no tricks. Basically who has the balls to leave the brakes off and take a fucking pounding from G-force and the omnipresent danger of going off the track at HIGH speed. That is something I would love to watch. It could be called Red Bull Rollercoaster. In fact, why not open it up to athletes from different sports - MTB vs MX, supermoto, street luge, rollerblades, skateboards, snowmobiles, those crazy NZ drift karts, whatever. Get some!

this event will no doubt be amazing to watch, but I've been following the red bull builders blog and they have so many wooden features and sculpted dirt transitions on the hill now it looks like a slopestyle course has just been built over all the natural stuff... last years real winner for me was Gee Atherton, Zinks 3' was big but the rest of his run wasn't anything up to the crazy gnar line Gee stomped out to perfection... in all, there's too many slopestyle events already, leave the Rampage natural please!
  • 6 1
Agreed, Zink pulled off one bmx trick and won, but had he attempted to do Gee's lines at Gee's speed he would have crashed several times over. It wasn't even close, in terms of difficulty of lines and the skill level required, Gee killed it.
  • 4 0
you can land a plane on some of the sculpted landings -.- too many calculations takes the balls out of it. I wanna see rampant lunatics not scientists.

Am I the only one who think that Gees' run is a bit overrated? Don't get me wrong though, I'm not hating on him.
  • 3 0
watch it again Lehel, closely, he rode an 'off-piste' steep section no other rider thought was possible, he nailed the hip-to-wall drop that no other rider managed to land despite them trying, as well as putting in some big jumps and drops... while riding it all completely clicked at world cup downhill speed, it really was epic!
  • 1 0
IMO Gee's run was better, but Zink's 360 was the best trick. I was there and could see pretty much all of Gee's run from where I stood. I couldn't see Zink's run until he was on the Oakley sender.

and bhd13 may I kindly ask how missing gee's run give you necessary data to judge who's run's better?

  • 2 0
I'd love to be on that mountain watching in person and seeing the view from the top to see if I'd even want to drop in. Until that happens I'll leave the opinion of course design to the pro's organizing the event and the athletes putting in their two cents about what wooden features should be involved in an event like this. Sponsorship dollars are what makes an event like this happen and none of us would talk about the Oakley banner randomly placed in the middle of the mountain now would we? But a giant wood feature allowing a spot for the riders to consistently have the same launch every time to know what tricks are possible during their run means it's a focal point for riders and fans. At this point the threat has 172 comments about wooden features at Rampage, Oakley did a good job of sponsor/logo placement.
I'm just excited to watch the event with the wide variety of riders invited. The variety between McCaul, Zink, Claw, Pilgrim, Paul Bass is going to be fun to watch. They all have a different style and the best part is that they get to choose how they make it down the mountain. They have access to all the same runs as everyone else so it'l be interesting to see who can be original with either their lines or doing original tricks on the ever popular Oakley wooden feature. They are all bad asses for just dropping in from the top.
  • 1 0
Yea well said man. Like I had said in a comment above, my only concern about the addition of all the wood features is that riders would feel like that had to hit all the big pre-built stuff to score well, which could take some of the originality about of things, which was always one of the best parts about Rampage. It's going to be a sick contest regardless.

And even if you (like me, an almost everyone else in the world) were to chicken to drop in this course, you're still a boss. You don't need to answer to anyone about that.

  • 2 0
Going to be insane. Enough of this, wood doesn't belong there.....MountainBiking is a progressional sport. It is always changing, continually adding another dimension that riders have to navigate. If that means the winning line is sending a retardedly huge drop that happens to be made of wood, which is what grants it its size....so be it. I'm entertained, and really, what else is redbull trying to do except gain viewership and spread the word of their events....Its working for me.
