@DannyOC: I'm just saying it's the most well known DH spot here in San Diego at which average guys ride big bikes - and that the camera angles don't tell the whole story. They didn't pick the rowdiest lines obviously but the smoothness is more his skill than the trails.
@hardyk: @employee7 it was parked in an empty cul de sac where there are no houses or buildings.
For the people that want bag on this being mellow riding, come out and try it. That first drop off the rock is called Bowel Movement for a reason. The rest of it isn't any easier.
I've learned to just watch videos with the sound turned off, and they turn out a lot better.
Those who think that he's not riding fast....that is a compliment to Brian. He has so many years of racing under his belt that he is relaxed and smooth under all conditions, and if he is not wearing certain articles of protection it is because he can still ride faster than us while staying within certain limits.
I'm sure that none of us could keep up with him.
Having seen Lopes race a ton, he is insanely smooth at speed. No one on a bike has ever had a faster sprint unless it was a BMX pro. His RPM's are just insane.
But since this is a Lopes post, it's obligatory to pick with him. So here goes:
@GeeHad: He seems like a nice guy. Never once spoken to him in the pits back in the day. Who knows. The shirt joke is fairly legit though. If you're at a race and he's wearing a shirt, you're probably just in the same restaurant.
I get lots of hate for being me, so I know what it feels like to just be you and still catch crap. I'm sure he's a good guy, but he's a public figure, among the first in DH and slalom at that, so an easy target. That's all.
I always wish he hadn't quit DH because he really was the fastest thing I've ever seen still to this day. Whatever sport he picked in life, he was gonna succeed because of the god given hyper speed he has.
@GeeHad: One other thing...for those who have kids and have seen the movie Over the Hedge, I picture the scene were they give Hammy the squirrel an energy drink what it must be like for Lopes on a daily basis. His walking speed is probably just a blur to everyone else. Hah. @stikmanglaspell ...tell me you've seen that movie and thought the same?
@GeeHad: A lot of people have negative stories about him, just being a cocky a*shole and generally taking himself/riding too seriously. I personally can't say because I haven't met him, but judging from what people who have say and the attitude he puts off in some interviews/videos, my impression is that he isn't a real "lighthearted" or "chummy" kinda guy. A hard worker and great racer, but maybe not the guy you want to be the face of mountain biking when doing a PR thing.
the trail is more of a flowey trail with a couple steep sections the jumps are pretty small on that line ,but he nails it pinned without knee pads...! and that is pretty RAD and a testament to his skill !! i have done this line on my DH bike and my all mountain bike ....as of now the best DH lines on the back side of this spot are SHUT DOWN .... nice edit RIP Ted !
I agree with a lot of people. The riding does look a little awkward in spots, and it might have something to do with him adjusting his riding style to a bike with less travel and less aggressive geometry. Possibly.
The point is, this bike can handle a trail like that. You might have to be Brian Lopes to pull it off, though...
first I thought he was on 911 roll at werld cup, but the rest didn't look like it. maybe multiple trails? been years since I been out there. anyway, amazingly smmoth riding at incredible speed. the guy is so relaxed and n control
Agreed...that's Telonics in laguna, and it definitely showcases a bike/rider better than the subject vid's particular part of SD.
I've never ridden SD (heard it's great actually...?), but Telonics/PGs/stair steps/silver surfer are my home! We are so lucky to have them, and Lopes has been riding here forever. Not sure if it's where he got his feet wet, but it has certainly had a valuable role in shaping him into the incredibly "smooth while loose" rider he is today.1
@nvranka: i've been coming out to OC from back East many times a year for over a decade, often to ride with my buddies there. i always was vocal in that, "if i could master Telonics/Silver/Rock-it to the point of hitting every single gap and drop at speed, i could confidently ride any trail, any hit, any bike park around." its got something of everything that would test all the different skills of riding DH/FR. got a few local trails that make me feel the same. besides already being a champion, Lopes lives 5 minutes away from there. when it comes to making videos for brands and using Telonics... i'd be willing to bet there's nothing more comfortable for him, nor awesome looking, that he would chose as a "go to."
@Sweatypants: yeah, that's how we feel about our trails....
Next time you're on the west coast, you should check out Mammoth bike park...so much fun, and you'll end the trip with a higher level of confidence when it comes to loose gnar. The jumps aren't as dialed for people who can hit them at speed (e.g. whistler A / dirt merchant / crabapple), but if you like fast/techy/loose riding you'll love it.
@RedBurn: most people ride trail/enduro without knee pads? At least in socal they do...
Not saying it's smart, but I do it too...not going to say I never crash riding enduro, but if/when I do it's usually just a front wash out or the like...nothing catastrophic. I'm more worried about not having a fullface than the lack of knee pads TBH.

Just sayin'

I'm sure if this vid were of him riding his TRACER 275C (more similar to his aforementioned IBIS), there would probably be more "WOW" factor.
Love the ending too "See you nerds !"
