Downhill Brigade - Alaska Video Series

by JGS Concepts Video
To date, Alaska is one of the most uncharted biking zones in North America. Offering high alpine trails with views of the ocean, volcano's, and the midnight sun, Alaska is the next prime location for mountain biking.

The free ride mountain bike community has yet to discover Alaska. As local guides, trail builders, production crew and riders we have spent the past 10 years searching out areas around Alaska. We are quite literally pioneering Alaskan free ride mountain biking.

The goal with Downhill Brigade is to create awareness worldwide about riding in Alaska, from basic trail riding to pioneering new areas around the state. We are working to raise funds not only to create a video series but for trail building and other non-profits in Alaska to continue growing AK for all and to educate and inspire the younger generations to come.

We will be producing a full video series about the adventures of pioneering new areas to ride in AK, as well as create safety and educational videos about all areas of mountain biking from the rules and regulations, safety videos and trail building tutorials.

Alaska Downhill Brigade (ADB) started in the fall of 2012 with a small, self-funded budget, a few cameras, some local riders and one day of filming at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood Alaska. We submitted our first edit to the 2012 Alaska Adventure Film Festival. Out of 15 films, JGS took home first place. At this point, we decided to take ADB to the next level. Since the first video release we have also won other awards including the Avid Chasing Trail contest on pinkbike.com and bravest award from vitalmtb.com.

Below is a small demo clip from one of the "Brigade", meet the crew edits that we are working on for this series.

I don't want to be wowser, but in New Zealand, environmental agencies (and mtb clubs) take a hard line on anyone who simply creates their own tracks through or down what looked like, in this case, readily erodiable terrain. I'm not familiar with the Alaskan situation, but can we assume this riding happened on private, not public land? Spare me any vitriol: I'm just interested in the difference in attitudes to the environment between the two administrations. If anyone can clear it up, I'd be grateful. Cheers, Dave

Hardly any land in Alaska is privately owned, according to wikipedia less than 1%. Environmental impact of biking isn't much of an issue here. Terrain like they were riding has such savage winters that any erosion from them pales in comparison to natural erosive forces.

The land we have filmed on has been privately owned and we have had full permission to film on.

Fast nasty single track, moss covered downhills with rocks. How big and frightening do you want? Its all here.No lift other than ATV or truck.

Sweeet! We have to look back again to that airfare to fly soon!

I think the ferry would be they way to go. JGS could get some cool shots that way too.
  • 2 0
ferry is def the way to go, half the cost & u can bring vehicle. Also avoid the whole airport with bikes deal. Let us know we will put u guys up & show u round.
  • 2 0
Yea the ferry is awesome, I have taken it a few times. We can bring over our backcountry chairlift that way to. haha Would make a pretty cool story for the series.

no worries about the bears unless your trying to pull a Treadwell.
  • 1 0
Had our first encounter this summer. It was a little scary for sure.
  • 1 0
we have more Kodiak bears(grizzly) than people on this island. Like big rats, u just get used to it. Its the black bears that creep me out, so glad we don't have them here.
  • 1 0
Ha! I have my first enconuter of the season in Alyeska, a black big one. In the Xtra-Tuff trail... scary, but I scared him more, screaming at him hahaha. I would prefer those to a Kodiak Griz.

Bears here could give a F about us, every black bear ive run into (Whistler) was persistent & just wanted to follow me
