Jumpship finally has a new home, right where a Slopestyle course should be - in the Mountains! Bear Mountain Resort has come on board to revitalize the Jumpship contest, and usher in a new evolution for the event.

planning stages

This year the Jordie Lunn designed course is bigger than ever. We've got more elevation to work with than we could have fathomed before, and we're making the most of it- you'll see a lot of fest-series influence in the course this year, and with a bunch of big-air riders involved, it should be a pretty spectacular event.
Jordie s grand scheme
Lots of big long booters are 'par for the course' this year.

3 guys who desperately want to drive that excavator.

One of the larger course features... a 40 foot booter over the golf cart path.

Join us October 3rd-5th at Bear Mountain Resort to see all the action. The event is free (as always), live music, a beer garden presented by Vancouver Island Brewing, and the AFD airbag will all be running all weekend long.

It is fitting that a mountain bike event once again be held at Bear Mountain as it was the best, largest trail network for mountain bike riding on South Vancouver Island when it was called Skirt Mountain, long before the Bear Mountain developers destroyed all of the MTB trails. Many old skool riders will remember all of the races that were held on this mountain many long years ago..

 1. It's nice to have a permanent home for the event, but it's too bad to move it from the harbour. It was a novel event in the middle of Victoria's tourist zone.

2. Now, the Bear Mountain developers didn't quite destroy all of the Skirt Mtn. trails, But after they aquired the property that Western Forest Products (WFP) had received from the province in a land swap, Bear Mountain approximately doubled the density of the original WFP proposal for the land. That, combined with the conveniently timed elimination of the Provincial Capital Commission meant that Bear Mountain didn't even have to plan for the multi-use "greenways" that would have traversed the development. Thus, the old riding area was almost completely non-viable.

The developers did pay lip service to the old users, but never followed up the commitment, and in the plans for the property, "trails" as an amenity for the community, were really bike paths.

Don't get too excited about this if you're a rider from Greater Victoria. Enduring trails will only come from this venture if there's a profit attached to their development, or in a similar vein, if the trails could be considered a community amenity that accompanies the destruction and development of the remaining 200 hectares of forested land north of the Langford/Highlands municipal boundary. A permanent and viable trail network will not happen on the mountain without a lot of hard work. Many of us will be willing to help, but I'm sure skeptical of the whole announcement given the past history of the development.

3. Yes, I have golfed at Bear Mountain. Once. I spent the whole round looking at the edges of the course trying to find old trails. It was heartbreaking. Never again.

4. To builld bridges, how about an ongoing, yearly cyclcross series that combines the golf courses' cart paths and trails on the mountain? That would build some respect, and repair Bear Mountain's relationship with the cycling community.

I love everything about jumpship. but i still sorta wish it was on the barges thats what made it so unique too. sitting in such a prestine location. In the victoria, inner harbour. Its what made jumpship so unique and spectacular.
i hope it will go back to the harbour maybe next year! Smile

Hopefully one of the new trails (I am being optimistic there will be trails) will include "Potato Chip" which is still there today. Ufortunately it dumps out right onto the golf course now.
It is a shame to lose Jumpship at the Harbour, it was beautiful and unique but the views from Skirt Mtn are also very beautifull and unique as well so it will be a great location for it now.

I'm not from the island and this is before my time, but gather around children and listen to the story about how there used to be a fun network of mountain bike trails there...before that monstrosity of a golf course destroyed them all.

So bear mtn is gunna give back to the mtb community, great news. Curious about the ecoasis stuff and more trails in the crd, need it there!

yo! thats the old drivin range.. i guess they got tired of paying to water it. will the course be open all year to practise and ride , or just the days of event. and if it is open will you need a bear mountain membership?

It's open for the event. We're tentatively planning on a weekly 'jam' on the course during the spring, but apart from that, the course will be too gnarly to be open all year.

so next spring and summer we can hope to see a weekly jam.. open for everyone? sick

That's like 5 mins from my house! All the other stuff coming to the westshore would be super sick. We have riders in Langford and now we'll have trails and events. That's suuuuper sick bros! Can't wait!!!!

Yeah bro sick! New contest location with permanent jumps. Out in the middle of nowhere. In October. Oh yeah, jumps won't be open to public afterwards. Too gnarly! I can see proline jumps being closed to public except for comps, but building smaller jump liness, a pump track and skills park wil have a greater positive effect on the riders in that area.

I love a good sip of haterade as much as anyone, but try and find a silver lining to this announcement ... there's a massive Slopestyle contest coming to a mountain near you. I'm sure you can find something positive in that. Just because this one article announcing the existence of a slope contest on the side of a golf-course didn't mention the additional bike-friendly facilities in the area doesn't mean they won't exist.

Glad The event is still gonna go on. But I feel a name change should happen. Jumpship was unique to the inner harbor and Vic-City. Not slagging them for keeping the name but new venue, new course = new name IMO. Still gonna go and have the stoke on for the rippers!

Our thinking is that it's the same event- the same crew, the same vibe, the same style. We've just been given the opportunity to evolve the event into exactly what we always hoped it could be. So we kept the name.

new venue, new course, same name.... for now. won't be ope to the public.
