Five years ago we started riding together, since then each of us has focussed on different areas. Nico took every opportunity to improve his riding skills. Kaspar worked hard on shooting and editing, which is now his full time job. Together we have travelled many miles, had an awesome time, and already shot a few videos. Since we both have full time jobs it's pretty hard to find enough time to plan and shoot something. but we managed to get our hands on some equipment and travelled for a total of two weeks without any budget.
First we went to Nuremberg to pick up the camera and drive to Schwalmstadt, Patrick Schweika's spot to catch the first sunlight and shoot the opening scene. The weather was perfect all day, a few dudes joined us and Nico pushed himself to learn frontflip supermans, three double whips and a flip cliffhanger! A perfect start for an awesome week. The next day we planned to get to Witten but finally decided to stay at Patrick's place, to get some different angles and have a chill session. At the end of the day Nico said, "why not try a flip double whip?" He tried it two times in the pit and under-rotated, but the step up was a bit larger so he went for it. There wasn't time to chill anymore cause the sun was going down so he tried it and BOOM, first try, landed perfectly pedal to pedal, perfect shot with the last sunlight and two stoked guys traveling back home to shoot some freeride stuff. Thanks to Patrick and Luisa for being the best hosts over the summer.
Travelling with so much gear isn't that easy, especially if you're in the middle of nowhere and mostly two guys with a bike, a bag with camera equipment, lenses and a Steadycam. We weren't even able to bring a tripod or any food. Thankfully our friends supported us with some kebab and helped us shooting where they could.
Nico took a pretty bad crash while trying a 360 drop in the woods. He came up a bit short and knocked himself out (watch it in the Behind the Scenes). He couldn't remember where he was and that he landed a flip double whip a few days ago. At this point we stopped shooting and took a break for a few days.
The dark and foggy scenes at the beginning of the video were shot near Esslingen. The locals just finished working on a few rollers and berms when we arrived and were really happy to see us shooting their spot. Thanks guys!
Nico had the frontflip drop in his head for quite a long time but never had a drop for it. Chris Laue showed up and said he had a rocky drop just a few minutes from home. So we went there, shovelled for a few hours but it had almost no rollout and Nico crashed into the trees right beneath it. Luckily he didn't got hurt too much went for a second try and landed it. Chris got the shot, Kaspar got the shot, Nico was still alive, and we where all happy with the result!
Editing took longer, because Kaspar was only able to edit after work at his office, handling raw Arri and Red footage isn`t that easy. Thanks to
Marian Schmid.
INITIATION is just the start of a yearly series of us traveling and having a good time while doing what we both love to do.
Thanks,
