You are in a plane crash in the Andes Mountains, not unlike those people from the movie Alive. As such, you will be forced to consume the human flesh of the people who died on impact; this will be a terrible experience but it is the only way for you to survive. Fortunately, you did not know any of the victims personally.
Would you rather eat a dead baby, or would you rather eat a dead elderly person? Would gender play a role in your selection process? And how much would it bother you if this meat turned out to be delicious?

  • 10 1
Funny, cause it was 39 years ago today that crash happened in the Andes Mountains

are you allowed to talk about something that may or may not have happened that would border on an unspecified jail sentence/restraining order that Warner and/or Gracia might have talked you into doing with them under the heavy influence of alcohol at a post race shindig? lastly, is there anything you do to your bikes that drives Monk crazy or is he just too cool to get upset ever?

  • 1 0
Ride for more than a day with a neck brace and you'll forget its even there.
  • 68 1
Gwin, you must have been relatively unknown in the world of mx as there seems to be no record of it - how good do you think famous top mx riders like Stewart and Reed would be if they switched to dh as well? would they make the current field look like amatures or is mtb up there with the best?
  • 2 0
i was thinking the same!! good question haha tbf he did used to race bmx as a kid i think
  • 17 2
 - Do you ever get annoyed by the assumption by a lot of people that MX is somehow superior to DH?
  • 14 4
I don't think it's an assumption - MX has bigger TV coverage, more money, bigger sponsors, larger crowds, huge factory race teams... When it comes to the riding level you go harder, faster and can grab massive amounts of air time which make for spectacular videos and photos. As much as I love DH let's not be stupid about it. At the end of the day, you can't go to a sports arena to watch a DH race. Tho in some ways I think that's good.
  • 7 2
You have to be just as much of a professional rider to excel at either, Gwin walking from MX into DH in 8 months was not typical. Most motorcross riders rely on their engine rather than carrying speed through corners which is essential for DH. It is not possible to say that top motorcross riders are better than top downhillers. Both are excellent riders but it is not wholly comparable. Just like Gwin doesn't win slopestyle events and Armstrong never won a track medal. It doesn't diminish either the rider or the sport.
  • 1 1
Let me clarify... superior in it's demands on the rider, not in terms of profile, spectator friendliness or airtime.
  • 2 2
Put it this way - if a DH rider walks into the MX world race series and kills it, you may have a case. It's hard to explain to people who have not ridden a MX bike or rode it how it should. MX is considered to be the one of the most physically demanding sports, from Enduro to MX - Look it up. Those who think the motor does the work for you has never ridden a MX bike. Crashing at the speeds MX riders do alone just hammers your body or kills you. As a older guy coming from MX - DH is much easier on my body IMO.
  • 4 0
Most moto racers don't spend their early years clipped in on a bmx bike racing the national circuit, that part of his upbringing is what separates him from other moto racers. The perfect nurturing for a DH racer.
  • 1 0
Totally agree with Protour, IMO starting with BMX makes the transition to MTB miles easier! I would say that helped Gwin just as much or more then MX did. In BMX you either get it and can handle a bike or you're sh*t and you dont last plain and simple!
  • 1 0
wow please let Gwin answer! lol - I know from my own experience Moto is a waaaaaayyy more physical sport...

From a rider's standpoint, what is your take on the UCI? Are they taking DH in the right direction?

I've read the Dirt UK interview (8 pages in fact) so let's get the record straight. In this part of the interview Dirt asked him about his Christian faith and beliefs. Here's part of his response that I think you guys are referring to: "Whether it's a good race or a bad race or whatever, at the end of the day it is just bike racing, there is a lot more to life and stuff that is more important to me". Further on Dirt asked: "Do you think you will stay involved with bikes down the line in say five or ten years time?" Aaron responded:"Yeah I will be involved with bikes of some sort, whether it is MX or Downhill or whatever. It would be cool to have a kid who is coming up in in downhill to help, like Rich Houseman helped me. I haven't really looked too far ahead, but I can never see myself getting outside of racing really".
The Dirt interview is well worth reading - in fact Dirt is worth reading every month if you want in depth stories, bike tests and dh race reports. After reading the interview I think Aaron came across as a mature, disciplined and humble DH racer. I respect his attitude. It's great to have an American back in the World Cup and winning races. Gives us Aussies, Kiwis, Brits and Frenchies some real competition!

Secondly, Congratulations for having worked and played so hard this 2011 season. On another note, could you please tell me (us) about your diet? • 2 0
He said in past interviews that while riding for Yeti he felt he could go as fast as Greg and Gee, but just didn't have the endurance strength to hold it together through a whole track. Well, Tomac sorted him out with that. I loved his quote after his first win in PMB where he said he didn't even feel winded or tired. The difference between the top athletes in the sport really comes down to effort and discipline put in to training in the off season. That and mental attitude, but I don't think he needed to work on that much. Just read "Mind Gym : An Athlete's Guide to Inner Excellence."

Hey Aaron, I am interested to know what is your opinion about the difference between carbon and alluminium frames in terms of performance. I hope your answer is not affected by the current heavy advertising of the new Session 9.9, but don't you think that the aluminium 8.8 is better in braking and an overall feeling of the bike, as it is more flexible? Which frame material would you prefer if you were not racing, but just riding for fun?
Thanks

Valentin Iliev
  • 3 1
Lighter frames mean lower sprung and unsprung weight. Of course you probably already know this. The unsprung weight of the rear triangle including linkages and parts of the rear shox are very important factors to be considered. The lighter they are, the faster they can react to trail input. This all equates a better bike!
  • 5 0

 Mr. Gwin,

1- The USA, taken as a country, has had its ups and down with Gravity results at an international level. In looking at other countries, such as France, Switzerland, even the UK, would a more structured national program raise the level of US rider results at the international level?

2- As an alternate to a NGB (such as USAC) taking a more active role in Gravity, is the current unstructured system the best we can hope for, awaiting someone of your talent to happen along?

3- Following up on #2 above, what is the appropriate role of a NGB (again, such as USAC) in developing young gravity athletes, or, again, is this effort best left to trade teams or the "free market"?

Thank you,
Calvin Jones

 Hello Aaron!
Consider this:
For a biped (for example, a human!) "Walking", to sum up, it's a series of controlled falls! are you agree? so, if yes, continue to read.
So what happened when a biped walks and controlling falls, take a bicycle and ride? Does he continues to control falls as he pedaling?
And if this experience has success until now so what happened in his mind if the biped riding a bike, ride fast like you?

Don´t you think that sport level and safety/security are not rising at the same pace? Every season we see riders pushing the limits to the furthers and though tracks look "safe" riders gear is not ready to protect as it should (Matti Lehikoinen breaking his face although he had the full face helmet on, for example)
  • 1 0
Don´t you think that the sport level and safety/security are not rising at the same pace? every season we see riders pushing the limits to the furthers and though tracks seem to be "secure" riders gear can not protect effectively, and I mean that probably downhill riding is one of the most dangerous sports, so it demands new solutions that simply doesn´t exist. For example, Lehikoinen seriously damaged his face although he had the full face helmet on.

I would like to know who he thinks would win the WC if it was a contest of pure bike handling skill and talent, and fitness / pedalling strength didn't matter, like in Champery for example. Man I really wish Gwin didn't crash out then we would know the answer!
  • 2 1
Just finished watching 3 Minute Gaps, and I thought you were good. However, does it make you mad that if they had made this a year later it would have been all about you instead of the Athertons and Greg Minaar? And if they DO decide to make a film for you, what would you like it to be called?
Thanks.
  • 2 0
Kind of a lame question. Aaron section in 3MG was, IMO, one of the best. That one corner he takes, kind of drifting into it at the speed of light, and somehow keeping the tires underneath him, only to come shooting straight out at Warp Speed Plaid, was ridiculous. I watch it over and over again, in slow mo, trying to understand what the hell just happened, and I still don't get it.
  • 1 0
They all had cool gaps, I'm saying the movie overall revolved Atherton and Minnaar. But if they had made it this year it would have been all about Gwin and his championship run. Kind of a "lame" interpretation. Even Fairclough had more camera time and he didn't even win anything.
  • 1 0
The film still wouldn't have been about him. It would have been nothing but interviews with other riders, trying to figure out how to beat Gwin Wink
  • 1 0
That's what the beginning was, except about Sam Hill. Can't wait to see Gwin beat him too.
  • 1 0
Be patient. Good things come to those who wait. Hollywood movies are made about this type of darkhorse domination. How was Clay Porter (or anyone) supposed to know that AG was going to absolutely kill it in 2011?

What movie star would play Aaron Gwin in a feature length film? Which actor would Aaron prefer play him in the movie?
  • 1 1
I love downhill, don't get me wrong, but I don't think the sport itself is big enough to make it to Hollywood. I mean, Sam Hill didn't become a movie in 2009. And if they did, it would be a documentary and Aaron Gwin would play himself. There's no reason to recreate races that people already have footage of.
  • 1 0
Sam Hill's story just doesn't compare and Aaron Gwin's story is not yet finished.

Doorknob, I may be mistaken, but I think Patsplit's comment about the movie star thing was a joke. It wasn't about making a movie, just about which Hollywood Star would play the part of Aaron Gwin. Chuck Norris? Brad Pitt? You get the point. Personally, I'm voting on Gary Busey Wink

When was the last time you performed a "no-footer", and, if it was not a recent occurence, would you think of executing the manoeuvre sometime soon? Jokes aside, I have a couple questions:
- Do you have any history riding bmx?
- Do you feel you have brought a much more professional approach to professional downhill mountain bike racing than has traditionally been associated with our sport?
- Is Trek World Racing planning on attending some of the new DH1 events?

Party on

Favorite track to start the season- Sea Otter or Port Angeles NW Cup?
  • 1 0
You had some success previous to this season, but can you pinpoint one thing that really made the difference between last season and this season? Do you put it down to training, diet, more focus or just a better all around package? Something else?
  • 1 0
This season had many new riders fighting for podium spots, more than we've ever seen, with some of the established names getting bumped further down the roster. Do you think that the overall skill and pace is getting faster, or are those established riders simply getting slightly slower?
  • 1 0
Did you enjoy the Beech mountain nationals course and the east cost style of riding? I saw you crash and get up to still get second which was epic. And are you excited to come back to my beautiful home state of NC and rip the nationals course again?
  • 1 0
How many Aluminum frames did you go through this year? Is Bell going to make a lighter better helmet for you (and hopefully us) down the line that meets real life standards, which have increased in the last few years to be safer, as well as not as bulky as a moto helmet?
  • 1 0
First off....Proud to see my countryman bring it all home for us to revel in ! Thank you !
Second....the question..... how do you go about tuning and getting your suspensions dialed in.... I assume you start with X amount of sag but then how do feel out where you like to have your compression and rebound circuits. Is it trial and error, line after line, with minor tweaks until it just feels right or is the some works / factory magic going on there ??
Thanks to Trek and to you for your time Mr. Gwin !
  • 1 0
I know that you surf.....you have a "Stewart" sticker on the rear window of your pickup truck. Do you ride a long board or short board? How often do you surf? I live here in Dana Point and would be glad to have you come surf Doheny with me during the next swell!
  • 1 0
my dad was a fairly good MX racer back in his day, help me get the point across to him that DH is totally differant! and explain why you dont run your suspension, tires the same as a MX bike and why he can NOT tell me everything about riding an MTB.
thanks aaron Smile

With the Athertons buying a whole new farm and field and Sam Hill's ridiculous pad in 3MG. I'd say it's enough, but that's only for the top 5 riders in the sport really--the legends. I am sure Martin Whiteley pays his team very well. Especially now with two WC champs.

It's called pragmatics and percentages! Get real!
  • 1 0
 Switch to Dvorak!
  • 1 1
they do it so that the most popular letter of the alphabet used are in the centre, i.e., asdfghjkl. the other two lines i have no idea
  • 2 0
That's probably incorrect dirtjumper. It's actually a less efficient arrangement to make people type slower. Originally came from typewriters to prevent jamming The Dvorak arrangement is far more efficient, but who wants another standard!
  • 1 0
hm. didnt know that. i was taught in grade 8 that it was the way i said. well, i trust strangers on the internet more than my gr8 teacher, so your right Razz
  • 1 2
Here is something to tap your brain on. "...Malling made porcelain model of the keyboard and to achieve greater writing speed he tried different placements of the keys. He placed the most frequently used keys in place where the fastest writing fingers struck and due to this the first typewriter to achieve writing speed more than that of writing by human hand was made. The typewriter was called Hansen Writing Ball... ."

  • 1 0
@jrjounor: remember this when you're a pro and think of the hardcore 13 year olds then that would kill to have a celebrity pro racer come ride with them for just one afternoon.. For now, you'll have to depend on your local PNW pro riders, who are way more rad anyways.

@karl-burkat: why would you negative prop this kid, what's the matter with you.?

  • 3 0
Pretty sure socio-economic status is absolutely a political issue....
  • 2 0
@protour that's so true, over here all the rich kids get better faster because they don't sit in their garage trying to true the same wheel they've used for a year because they can't afford a new one because it took them years to save up for a second hand session88 on a waiter's salary! the rich kids just ask daddy for a new set!! bastards ... sorry i appear to be ranting ... but seriously rich kids that get 5 grand bikes off there parents and ditch the sport 6 months down the line really grinds my gears (no pun intended)!!!!
  • 1 0
dh-freeride - i agree Protour - being a geographer im academically going to agree with you however this could become very very contentious as surely we have to at least assume that race has, in this day and age, nothing to do with the ability to gain skil sets or good forbid earn a decent wage! xenophile i concur
  • 1 0
this story here is true of any sport involving expensive equipment, especially motor racing, its still a rich person only sport, as is moto-x largely, as its expensive to transport to and ride on tracks - I've heard of 16yr old kids who have their own world champs grade moto tracks complete with start grids in their back yards here in Oz, these kids are from rich families and will certainly progress further than someone who has to start earning a living at 18.... it also has to do with culture, its not 'cool' for black people to do white people's sports - period!
