 Been waiting for someone to do this since Watson. Although, I thought Watson only got to look at the gap since it was so exposed. In his video wasn't that his first attempt at it? Regardless, nice job guys.

 Pretty sure it was his first go at it and yeah that was such a cool spot. It's awesome how it was also an anniversary jump for NWD as a film series and this one is an anniversary jump of that one, haha. This dude has a pretty cool claim to be the first one to land a jump over the Tour, though.

 Wouldn't it be cool if bmx'ers set up a gap jump over the World Championship DH race course and gapped it during the event? It would be awesome for them to draw attention to themselves and possibly cause spectators to be distracted from the main event they came to watch, right?

 Well Dave woulda been arrested regardless if he landed or not, haha. Just seems like there's not much opportunity for a gap like this and they got really lucky with Dave's attempt for the NWD anniversary. If I remember correctly he wasn't fined much of anything due to the injuries he sustained from trying the gap in the first place... still such an insane gap.

Not sure on the injury but I completely forgot just how big that was until I watched it again. I also have an appreciation for this video as he broke his belt upon crashing which I did years ago on a good crash haha. Watching him pick up his pants while running away is priceless.

Also Dave's landing seemed a lot more rough and the bikes / technology of their suspension is not comparable.


Don't get me wrong, I have mad props for this dude for doing this.
I just think that if you copy something and still want it to be impressive, you need something that makes the new one sicker than the old one (higher or a backflip for example), and not a smaller version of the original one. This jump is sick as hell, but I miss the shocked and super impressed feeling I had 10 years ago when suddenly seeing Dave's Tour de France gap while watching New World Disorder 4 for the first time.

But still, don't get me wrong, respect for this dude!

 I have to agree with Spongebomb. No knock on the stunt performed, but to duplicate someone else's stunt, failed or not, almost requires it to be the same or better/harder. Think all of the Evel Kneivel stunts that have been recreated. And this isn't doing something a bunch of others have done. It's only been done by one other guy.

It's a totally different animal. Watson's was sighted, shovel scraped a bit and he hit it. No six month development. No month long set up with countless practice runs. And his was about twice the height. If they'd only jumped some other race they would have gotten an A from me. But to compare it to Watson's jump raises the curve so I can only give em a B.

 This doesn't compare to Watson's jump. This was super calculated and it looks like they had plenty of preparation.
Watson's jump seemed way more daring, on the fly... I'm sure there was some prep work, but did he ever test the drop?
I think the fact Watson crashed is irrelevant.. he got up and walked it off like a boss... That's freeride to the max...
I'm also pretty sure Watson's take off and landing was groomed the same way...
We know bikes have evolved greatly since then.
Please don't compare it to Watson's jump.... This was sick but not even close to Dave's.

 These guys don't have to go bigger or better than Watson. They can do what they want, just like anyone else can. That's what freeride's all about.

 I have to agree with your point. This is not like a train gap, where the only person getting hurt is the rider. In this instance, a mistake could hurt someone else and impact a professional cyclist's livelihood. Obviously these guys practised lots and had the jump totally dialled, but to me the consequences are just too high to attempt this.

it's unbelivable how the same video has benn commented in the over 200 posts in the italian mtb forum. Seems like the rider killed someone or a kind or an action that earns an year into jail.!
Lot of mtb's rider (xc ox gravity) are against this actions, and no comment about roadbikers intervention into mtb's forum. They're inflamed! Personally we (me and friends) where discussing some months ago to do a same road gap when Giro come in our area. Don't know if with more free time from job and no injury (as I have ) we would did it.. . I think we prefeared to spend energy working on a good trail than search an instant of glory...and a sure ammount of bullshit from cops........

 Apart from on here and bike radar a few days later I've seen or heard nothing more. I shared it with a couple of my mates who follow the tour and they knew nothing about it. Seems a shame there was no one there to get a decent pic. I liked it but its the sort of thing my dad would call irresponsible, what if this happened? Etc etc.
It's too soon, I'd work on the trail.

 He's not stupid. He's got a point. Every gumby hucker with a big bike will be jumping the peloton for exposure. And one day it will go very wrong, and it won't go wrong just for the hucker, but for some professional rider whose livelyhood relies on their fitness.

And is the overall reputation of mountainbikers going to be enhanced by these actions? The answer is no. This is a selfish action for self-promotion.

And it's already been done, bigger, better, and with more respect to the roadies.

 @shop4mondon, I think we have the American perspective in regards to having permission for a trail and trails getting torn down. I was thinking the same thing, they'd better hide that jump or 'the man' is going to tear it down. I've never been to France but I get the impression that because we are so lawsuit-crazy everyone is afraid of getting sued here, not so much in other countries, so there's not as much restriction over where and what you can build and ride.

 Watson did show the world, his jump was all over the news back then. This one is on Pinkbike. Great jump though! I think it would be all over the news if he messed up and took out the peloton:-)

Anyway, Watson said he didn't jump right over the riders in case things went wrong he didn't want to hurt anyone. That's only one of the reasons why Watson > These guys.

 I agree! I was offended by the jump... ....I try to be respectful of other people's sports...and property Riders should get their fame and attention at their own events...and not try to steal the glory of a great tradition.

 This is what's starting to get annoying. The elitism of us freeriders. Road is just a whole different sport entirely. It'd be like comparing pro rugby players to pro triathletes - both require a ton of grit, just in different manners. I love that this video promotes for a ballsy and unique type of cycling that a lot of people aren't even aware of, just don't like that it points out how huge our egos are that we need to do it at the expense of road cycling. Neg prop me, just my opinion

 I ride MTB and road bike as well. They both require balls. Taletorale first try to do a 200 km loop in the mountains on the road in one day you will most probably change your mind.

I know. I ride road with my kids in a trailer and a special seat on the back for exercise, and i admit, I am beginning to get a taste for those times when I can get out for a road pedal (especially when the trailer can stay at home). It requires strength and dedication like people wouldn't believe to ride like those guys do. Nevertheless, does road deserve to be be more popular than mtb? No. Not remotely. Being good at exercising (what road riding and jogging and weight lifting all are) can't hold a candle to the skill required to have the ability to read trail, pump your body at the right times and screw up the courage to push yourself over that jump, never mind the control to do tricks and the like. It is why roadies who switch over to mtb get so exhausted. They have to work twice as hard than a mtber because they work against the trail, bulldozing through what they should harness and flow over. Meanwhile, any serious mtb all mountain guy can knock down 60 miles days after a couple weeks of road riding. I'm not saying we are tour d anything material, but the strength and skill required for dirt more than match the strength and planning required for road.
MTB requires more skill than road. Period. And it is cooler.
Final point: If anyone is pompous in the cycling world, it is not the mountain riders. We are generally accepting friendly and fun people. There are a lot of nice lycra wearers, but douche bags are far more drawn to road than dirt.

 What are you talking about? MTB riders are just as bad as roadies. 95% of both are cool and chill, and the last 5% are just dicks anyway. I've met more friendly roadies while riding to the trails than I have MTB riders while on the trails.

Point made about broad generalizations. My wife also just jumped all over me for being a pompous jerk. I blamed it on the road riding I've been doing lately, but she didn't buy it.

I do stand by my skill statement though. MTB is way cooler too. Afterall, pink bike is an mtb site and just check out how cool it is (cough cough lone wolf)!

 IMO a great rider knows how to use one discipline to train for the other. Climbing hills in enduro is a lot easier if you train on hills with A roadie. Just my take on it though

 To say MTB requires more skills then road biking is false in my opinion. It just requires a completely different set of skills. Where MTB requires all the things you said. Road in my opinion is more about learning where and how to push your body. Its not about who is the fittest, its about who can push themselves at the right time and know exactly how long they can do it for. Not trying to start anything here, just giving my two cents

What you said applies to weight lifting and marathon running too. In otherwords, just as I said: planning and strength, just like any fitness competition. You ever see a true pool master put english on a ball? That is what i am saying mtb does. You gotta know what speed and angle and where to put body weight to hit off camber roots. You gotta spot good lines. You gotta know for what patches of climb to put the power down for and back off for. Add in the xc races that require pacing like road and i don't see how you can compare.

 Its easy to compare, you are just applying the theory that because one has physical obstacles it requires more skill. All I am saying is that they require different skill sets. More then just what I stated before. Such as keeping a steady cadence(harder then you think), riding in a large group inches from one another or even a sprint lead out train. These are all very hard skills to learn. I am not saying they are harder then the skills required to MTB bike, for some people they may be. It probably depends on what sport you took up first. I was a MTBer first and took to the skills required for it far quicker then the skills needed to road bike at a high level. I do not have a preference between the two styles of riding so I am not arguing for one or the other, I just think a lot of MTBers over simplify how hard road riding and in particular road racing is.

 I agree with you guys I think the more bikes you ride the better. One thing I wanted to add: I ride a road bike 99% of times on roads in the mountains-you just can't escape that MTB background Riding flat roads is just f*cking boring. It's nice training for enduro rides, plus it's super cool riding 80 km/h down a road
