Windham World Cup Qualifying - Gwin qualifies first

Jul 8, 2011 at 15:13
by Karl Burkat
Thunderstorms rolled in just before the start of the women's qualifying race, forcing a 45 minute delay to the start of qualifying; it's unsafe to run a chairlift during a thunderstorm.

Once the women were underway, it was a collection of the usual suspects in the top five with the exception of Sabrina Jonnier; Sabo had a subpar run, coming home in ninth, +11.825 seconds off pace. Jill Kintner was definitely feeling it, coming in just .3 seconds out of a top five qualifying position.

The men were subject to nearly a 1 hour delay due to the weather, but Gwin absolutely hammered the course: Fastest speed over the track overall and fastest splits. Gee Atherton came home second, immediately followed by MS-Evil's Brook MacDonald.

There will be a practice tomorrow for all the qualifiers, with XC races on tap; followed by the Downhill Final on Sunday.

Aaron Gwin took a quick inside line in the rock garden--one of only a handful of riders to do so. But that--and whatever other lines he took--were obviously the lines as he qualified nearly six seconds up on Gee Atherton the second fastest qualifier.

warner will be getting wild on this one

Tbh, i know gwin is an awsome rider....but it has spoiled the series tbh......last year it was a constant battle between minnar and gee, and we could predict who would win, this year its just stupid
  • 16 0
you have a point, but clearly Gwin has done something right that they haven't and deserves the wins. i reckon they will catch up by champs though
  • 8 1
@stinkysam its not like the riders try to keep it even to make it interesting
  • 2 0
@Neimbc. Yeah really i can hear him saying that now. Ahhhh, amusement. Its the small things (:
  • 3 0
there's plenty of other riders right on his tail, let's just see what gee and peaty have in store for this race
  • 6 0
Yes indeed, after I saw those times my nuts shattered. Gwin is a f**king machine and rightfully so, he works his damn A** off!
  • 1 0
We knew already, even before the trainings that he would be first... Again!
  • 4 7
you stink stinky sam you are just mad because your British golden boy has been usurped by an American
  • 11 0
 seriously?????
Stinkysam...what you are syaing is bulls**t, to have a rider come in and dominate the top section of the championship is a real breathte of fresh air....why wouldnt it be?
It really mixes up the top end of the world cup rounds in a way that no other rider has done in many a a year!
I reckon that Gwin is a true inspiration.
What is the harm in having another, almost outside rider in some respects, showing the big dogs how to do it?
I say fair play to the lad, good on him for being so balls out and unreal in his riding!!!!!!

 gwin is killin' everything
  • 3 0
i think this season is more exciting than any i've watched.. Gwin has established himself at the top obviously, but anything can happen on race day... and the top 10 and podium each week is anyone's guess... bryceland, gee, greg, brook, hart, bronson, steve smith.. these guys are on fire!.. mic and fairclough have had some bad crashes, but who knows.. Peat was way up on the last split here last year.. plus CG is killing it and having a blast.. barel, matti... who'd i miss??... the racing is just awesome this year... too bad Hill is out.. his come back at Champs last year was awesome and would love to be watching him and Gwin duke it out.
  • 1 0
it's just a shame chris kovarik isn't racing much, that would really mix things up!
  • 2 3
I dont have anything against gwin, and i think its great that he is an outsider showing everyone how its done.....all im saying is that we can predict who will win this one, and probably the whole world cups this year
  • 2 0
Who cares if you can predict it? It's an electrifying feeling seeing someone (and it could be anyone, I would be just as insanely stoked if it were Gee crushing it) just perform like a demi-god on a bike like this. Is it natural talent? Or is it because he worked his ass off insanely hard training? Whatever it is you can bet your sweet ass that the rest of the riders are now going to be pushing themselves even harder and to me that just means the sport will get more exciting. Gwins unexpected domination this season is A GOOD THING for the sport. Not to mention I know sooo many Americans who started following the sport this season because of what Gwin has done. The more people we bring into our sport the better.
  • 4 0
 ^ Wise words, those are.

i think a 17 year old in 4th is pretty bad ass. well done troy
  • 8 3
Yeah, and on top of that he is from the flattest country in the world. Only Aussies can do that.

Australian in blowing about how great Australians are shocker...change the record.
  • 6 1
 aus really isn't that flat...
  • 10 1
Exactly. Australia is flat in comparison to other continents but considering its a fucking continent and not a normal country it has plenty of mountainous regions. Try finding some DH riding in Holland or Denmark and then try claiming Australia is flat.
  • 1 0
Troys throws it down like a man!!!
  • 16 2
flattest?? try eastern canada. its flatter then ur girlfriends tits here.
  • 4 0
You're just bitter because you live in Pickering. There's plenty of riding in the east.
  • 3 3
Awww sorry to upset you samsemtex. Now dont go down town burn the f*ucking place down, will you.

Good on ya Troy.
  • 2 1
Could we see Gwin vs Troy in a year or 2?
With Gee, Greg, Danny, Rat Boy etc all trying to find the vital seconds to get on the podium.
Gwin is the best thing that has happened to the sport in years.
  • 2 0
i'm currently at mt. buller, 2000 metres up, a fairly small hill over here. i also live next to a fifteen minute downhill run. oh but yeah, australia's flat, i must have imagined all of this..
  • 25 2
this isnt even funny anymore. its a race for 2nd place! who will it be?
  • 10 6
who cares about first anymore we all know its going to be Aaron Gwin
  • 9 0
With out any doubt Gwin is a man on a mission, almost 6 seconds faster than Gee can be called legendary.Nice to see Macdonald,Brosnan en Hart killing it.
  • 13 4
 mmmmMERICA!!
  • 3 3
it's qualifying, doesn't really mean anything, lets see what happens on sunday eh? Wink
  • 1 0
LOL at Windham? I'm feeling an American win in America, TBH. =-)
  • 21 0
Steve Smith needs a win! I would like to see it!
  • 11 1
Over 5 seconds is fucking ridiculous.
  • 4 0
Especially on a two and a half minute course...
  • 1 0
Is the course short, or is it just a really fast course?
  • 8 0
SIX SECONDS OVER ATHERTON?!?!?! did he friggin FLOAT over everything?!
  • 12 1
yes he did he had those floaties things on his arms to help him DESTROY
  • 7 0
Gee isn't gonna be happy with that I don't think!!
  • 5 0
 at least he didn't puncture
  • 2 1
I hate gwin. He's to good!!!!!!
  • 5 0
Troy Brosnan is absolutely amazing and one of my favorites this season. I mean look at this young lad and how he's powning a whole bunch of world class riders!!!
  • 2 0
I cannot wait to see the young ripper is in a few years!
  • 3 0
Brook Macdonald is the guy on a mission, its great to see Gwin up there giving america an actual rider, but Brook came out of nowhere it seems like and is flying, and it would still be sick to see steve smith get a win. Anyone know why they have done qualifying on Friday for the past 2 races?
  • 1 0
I think they did qualy on fri is because there is another DH race going on Sat. There having a Gravity East race there on a different course and dont want the interference. I have a couple buddies that are racing that, I would be also but im stuck overseas.
  • 1 0
Because of the XC race I think.. Thats why they did it at MSA anyway.
  • 4 1
this is getting beyond a joke now, if these guys dont sort out their attitude I am going to come and fucking sort it out for them. If Aaron Gwin wins another world cup this year Atherton Minnaar Blenki and all the other regular podium goers can expect a personal visit from me!
  • 2 1
So funny! You need to start buying plane tickets bro, 'cause this one isn't really a contest anymore! LOL
  • 5 0
Minnaar in 13th? What's up with that? Where the hell did Gwin come from? How is that possibl!
  • 2 0
wondering if he's nursing an injury from last week's crash.. wrist maybe..
  • 1 0
He went down HARD last week. It looked like he took a bad hit to his shoulder from the perspective one fan got of the crash.
  • 1 0
not sure.. but there was a photo last week of them icing/spraying his wrist right after his race run
  • 3 2
There has to be some reason for Gwin to rise from a consistent top 10 rider to this unbelievably dominant level. How can just one of these top pro male riders just start whack nigh on ten seconds of his times? Neg prop me if you wish; but I'm hoping like heck that the cause of his improvement isn't something sinister like EPO. I'm not accusing him at all, I'm just scaremongering really. Cos, personally, I reckon he's simply having a stellar run on a brilliant bike. After all, Tracey Mosely ain't fairing too badly either.
  • 4 0
New Team, New Bike, New Coach. I'm sure it's one of or a combination of several factors. Either way it's great to see an American back at the top of such a great international sport! Aaron for the gWin!
  • 5 0
you have to remember also that aaron gwin got top ten in his first world cup, so it was only a matter of time before he was on top
  • 5 0
Well he has only been riding DH for 3 years so he clearly wasnt at his peak last year. He had more room for improvement than the other riders so its much easier for someone like him to knock 10 seconds off his time than it is for someone like Minaar who has been riding all his life. He's possibly not even at his peak yet which is scary.
  • 4 0
samsemtex is right. If he had been racing WC for several years and placing in top 20 or so, then in one year smash into first, that may raise a red flag, but he was 4th last year in his 2nd year of racing. He's also getting used to the race schedule and all the traveling. Now with a new team, and trainer(a true legend), I'm not surprised he's killing it. Gwin has always had natural talent, he just needed to refine it.
  • 3 0
EPO wouldn't really help all that much in DH racing, by the way...
  • 1 0
Doping in DH wouldn't do much good. I don't understand why people don't get this. Also the riders are tested.
  • 2 0
cant say gwin without saying steroids......... haha jokes, seems a pretty legit guy
  • 1 0
I know everyone is joking about doping but i just found this and thought everyone should take a look at it.http://www.uci.ch/templates/UCI/UCI5/layout.asp?MenuId=MjI0NQ&LangId=1
  • 1 0
Seekins, Gwin is a great competitor and of course is having a good year. He is a good racer and good guy. He is where he is because he is determined and works hard at it. You ask any of those guys about there run and I guarantee they will not say that they pinned it and would not have changed a thing in their run. Don't hate the man because he is humble and not some cocky assh@le
  • 3 0
Good to see Danny Hart up there near the top again. The lad is so reliable! tup props to Troy as well! so many Young Guns up there! Smile Downhills future is looking bright!
  • 4 0

Aaron Gwin, Thank you for being American.
  • 4 1
Let the hate for America start Now!!
  • 1 0
It's unavoidable.... someday they will forget George Bush.
  • 3 0
we misunderestimated him for the last time
  • 1 3
Forget Dubya its that F***face Obama that everyone across the world needs to forget. At least George Bush can woop some ass on a mountain bike and thats a fact.
On a lighter note I do hope that Aaron can take first on home soil. But hell, the pressure is on. These guys are tearing those course up to one up each other. The most deserving will take 1st.
  • 1 2
Yea Obama is absolutely terrible as well.. You will find no partisan argument here. We have made some serious mistakes at the ballot box on both sides of the isle in recent history...
  • 1 1
Yup F.O. you got it. Its not America thats the problem its the criminal government that runs it. Ron Paul all the way.
  • 2 2
Our government is F*CKED beyond repair unfortunately.... Look at my bike pictures for a clear statement on my personal feelings about the US government. Iit's hard not to like Ron Paul.... He's a little crazy, but he is a good man swimming against the tide of a gigantic sh*t ocean that is the modern US government.
  • 1 0
 ^^^ nice name hahaha
  • 3 0
 Troy "Rocket" Brosnan. That's all.
  • 3 0
I think its time for Macdonald or Bronsnan on the top step.
  • 1 0
Man. I was going to cheer for Gee....but now I see that's nearly impossible with 5 sec. to beat! Insane Gwin! Now maybe you can break a leg or something...........(^__^)

  • 1 0
If it is called a session 9.9 then I missed that. Last I heard it was still a Session 88.. and thank you for enjoying my name.. But more importantly thank you for your service.... stay safe and come home soon.
  • 1 0
Gwin is absolutely killing it this year though. Think he has the championship already.
  • 2 1
The name of the new Carbon Session (YOU HAVEN'T HEARD ABOUT IT???) is Session 9.9.
  • 5 3
 I literally couldn't care less.

It's become a gwin fest lately Frown
  • 2 0
one mechanical or crash and things change really quick..
  • 1 1
No matter who you are there is going to be someone faster than you, next year someone will be faster than Gwin. it's how racing goes.
  • 1 0
hey uhm does anyone know what the time section means? like are they displaying km/h or mph or what.. Razz
  • 1 0
its in KPH. Its a fast track, but there is no way in hell that the top guys were going almost 60 MPH. and its for the speed trap. Kabuto helmets are giving away 1000 Euros to the person who has the fastest cumulative speed at the end of the season at Val De Sol.
  • 1 0
i was about to say GO STEVE SMITH. then it said 6 seconds ahead of gee. so gwin is gunna win. im %95 sure.
  • 2 0
